The Masterpiece of Christ Gifts of the Holy Spirit Part 2 THE MASTERPIECE OF CHRIST GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT PART 2 Amplified Bible Definition of MASTERPIECE a work done with extraordinary skill; especially : a supreme intellectual or artistic achievement Acts 1:8 But you will receive power and ability when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses [to tell people about Me] both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth.” Paraclete (Gr. παράκλητος, Lat. paracletus) means advocate or helper. In Christianity, the term paraclete most commonly refers to the Holy Spirit. A Spiritual Gift is a special divine empowerment bestowed on each believer by the Holy Spirit to accomplish a given ministry God's way according to His grace and discernment to be used within the context of the Body of Christ. Greek χάρισμα (khárisma), which means"favor freely given" or "gift of grace". The term and its plural χαρίσματα (charismata) derive from χάρις (charis), which means "grace". Talents are natural abilities that seem to be hereditary, to run in the genes, or to have been learned through conditioning from the environment in which we lived or through training we have received. Spiritual gifts, on the other hand, are an empowerment of supernatural origin, not a result of genetics, training, or conditioning. Spiritual fruit is the result of what we do in His power like the development of character traits... 22 But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy, [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Galatians 5:22 Amplified Version 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Amplified Bible 4 Now there are [distinctive] varieties of spiritual gifts [special abilities given by the grace and extraordinary power of the Holy Spirit operating in believers], but it is the same Spirit [who grants them and empowers believers]. 5 And there are [distinctive] varieties of ministries and service, but it is the same Lord [who is served]. 6 And there are [distinctive] ways of working [to accomplish things], but it is the same God who produces all things in all believers [inspiring, energizing, and empowering them]. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit [the spiritual illumination and the enabling of the Holy Spirit] for the common good 12 [and He did this] to fully equip and perfect the saints (God’s people) for works of service, to build up the body of Christ [the church]; 13 until we all reach oneness in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, [growing spiritually] to become a mature believer, reaching to the measure of the fullness of Christ [manifesting His spiritual completeness and exercising our spiritual gifts in unity]. Ephesians 4:12-13 WISDOM: to apply knowledge to life in such a way as to make spiritual truths quite relevant and practical in proper decision-making and daily life situations The gift of Knowledge: the special ability that God gives to certain members of the Body of Christ to discover, accumulate, analyze, and clarify information and ideas which are pertinent to the growth and well- being of the Body. This gift builds understanding in an exceptional way of the great truths of God’s word and gives insight into their relevance to specific situations in the church. A person with this gift will be driven to learn, analyze and uncover new insights with regard to the Bible and faith. The gift of faith: may be defined as the special gift whereby the Spirit provides Christians with extraordinary confidence in God’s promises, power, and presence so they can take heroic stands for the future of God’s work in the church. The spiritual gift of faith is exhibited by one with a strong and unshakeable confidence in God, His Word, and His promises. Hebrews 11 The Book of Daniel The Song “It is Well” Expresses faith perfectly and to another the [extraordinary] gifts of healings by the one Spirit; The spiritual gift of healing: is the supernatural manifestation of the Spirit of God that miraculously brings healing and deliverance from disease and/or infirmity. It is the power of God that destroys the work of sin and/or the devil in the human body, such as the healings that Jesus and the disciples performed. The possibility of healing could possibly extend from physical to also emotional and or mental. 10 and to another the working of [a]miracles The spiritual gift of miracles: is one of the spiritual gifts, where the NIV calls it “miraculous powers” and the ESV and KJV list it as “the working of miracles.” The gift of miracles, or miraculous powers, is different from the gift of healing, which is listed in verse 9. Those in the early church who had the gift of miracles had the ability, by the Spirit, to do miraculous things of a different, more powerful kind: the casting out of demons (Acts 16), the striking of Elymas blind (Acts 13), and the raising of Tabitha from the dead (Acts 9) are possible examples. and to another prophecy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people] PROPHECY: Rom. 12:6; 1 Cor. 12:10; Eph. 4:11 - to speak forth the message of God to His people (Greek Word: prophetes - the forth-telling of the will of God; 'pro'=forth; 'phemi'=to speak) and to another discernment of spirits [the ability to distinguish sound, godly doctrine from the deceptive doctrine of man-made religions and cults], DISCERNMENT: to clearly distinguish truth from error by judging whether the behavior or teaching is from God, Satan, human error, or human power to another various kinds of [unknown] tongues, and to another interpretation of tongues. 11 All these things [the gifts, the achievements, the abilities, the empowering] are brought about by one and the same [Holy] Spirit, distributing to each one individually just as He chooses. glóssa: the tongue, a language Original Word: γλῶσσα, ης, ἡ Transliteration: glóssa Short Definition: the tongue, a language, nation Definition: the tongue, a language, a nation (usually distinguished by their speech). TONGUES: 1 Cor. 12:10; 14:27-28 - to speak in a language not previously learned so unbelievers can hear God's message in their own language or the body be edified INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES: 1 Cor. 12:10; 14:27, 28 - to translate the message of someone who has spoken in tongues.

No, though in the early 1900s there indeed began a spiritual movement of speaking in tongues that is now global in proportion. Speaking in tongues is definitely a gift for today. However, until the twentieth century, speaking in tongues was a commonly occurring but relatively unpublicized inclusion of New Testament Christianity. Many great Christians including Justin Martyr, Iranaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Augustine, Chrysostom, Luther, Wesley, Finney, Moody, etc., either experienced the gift themselves or attested to it. Prior to 1800, speaking in tongues had been witnessed among the Huguenots, the Camisards, the Quakers, the Shakers, and early Methodists.

  • Definitions of Spiritual Gifts
Definitions of Spiritual Gifts A spiritual gift is an “extra ability” given by the Holy Spirit to accomplish a ministry. Every Christian has at least one gift, and it's possible to have several gifts, although one may be dominant. All the gifts should operate in love for the glory of God. Administration — 1 Cor. 12:28 The gift of organizing people and/or assignments. A person with this gift enjoys planning and coordinating. People who like doing paperwork may have this gift. Apostle — Eph. 4:11 Means "one who is sent." There are at least 19 apostles mentioned in the New Testament. This gift would include missionaries, church-planters, and those overseeing groups of churches. Discerning of Spirits — 1 Cor. 12:10 The ability to discern evil spirits and when deception is taking place. Evangelist — Eph. 4:11 Means "one who proclaims the good news." A person with this gift has a passion for sharing the gospel and seeing people saved. Exhortation — Rom. 12:8 The gift of encouraging and strengthening another person. It is not flattery, but is the ability to draw out the positive qualities in a person. Faith -— 1 Cor. 12:9 A supernatural ability to trust in God for the miraculous, usually during a time when circumstances look bleak. Giving — Rom. 12:8 This person loves to give from their own financial resources and otherwise. Extends generosity above and beyond normal giving. A person with this gift may or may not be wealthy, but finds joy and ecstasy in giving to God's work. Healing — 1 Cor.

It uses various phrases to convey their meanings, in different contexts it shows how they are to be used and finally, it illustrates them in the lives of gifted people. In most cases all believers are expected to perform the activities (or working out)of the gifts as they learn how to do so by observing those people specifically gifted in each area. Some of the gifts are not even mentioned outside the lists given in the Scriptures. Obviously then, a definition of the gifts will require considerable interpretation and certain amplitude allowing for a variety of opinions. Some of the gifts are declared by Paul to be of a temporary nature (prophecy, knowledge, and tongues, 1 Cor 13:8), so the natural question is, when? If we can establish that those gifts had a temporary purpose in the foundation period of the Church, it is possible that there were other gifts that were not going to be permanent for the whole Church Age: apostleship, healing, interpretation of tongues and miracles.

  • Speaking in Tongues in the Restoration Churches
AR TICLES AND ESSAYS Speaking in Tongues in the Restoration Churches Lee Copeland "WE BELIEVE IN THE GIFT OF TONGUES, prophecy, revelation, visions, heal- ing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth" (Seventh Article of Faith). While over five million people in the United States today speak in tongues (Noll 1983, 336), very few, if any, are Latter-day Saints. How- ever, during the mid-1800s, speaking in tongues was so commonplace in the LDS and RLDS churches that a person who had not spoken in tongues, or who had not heard others do so, was a rarity. Journals and life histories of that period are filled with instances of the exercise of this gift of the Spirit. In today's Church, the practice is almost totally unknown. This article summarizes the various views of tongues today, clarifies the origin of tongues within the restored Church, and details its rise and fall in the LDS and RLDS faiths. There are two general categories of speaking in tongues: glos- solalia, speaking in an unknown language, usually thought to be of heavenly, not human, origin; and xenoglossia, miraculously speaking in an ordinary human language unknown to the speaker. When no dis- tinction is made between these two types of speech, both types are collectively referred to as glossolalia. On the day of Pentecost, Christ's apostles were gathered together. "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were con- founded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language" (Acts 2:4, 6).

Knowing and Living into our Spiritual Gifts God’s Gifts for you and the Church Developed by The Rev. W. Frank Allen [email protected] Table of Contents Introduction page 3 Chapter One A Short History of the Holy Spirit page 7 Chapter Two The Gifts of the Holy Spirit page 17 Chapter Three Spiritual Gifts Inventory page 21 Chapter Four Understanding Our Gifts page 29 Chapter Five Organizing for Church by our Gifts page 69 Chapter Six The Most Excellent Way page 74 2 Introduction Not by might, not by power but by the Spirit of God As Christians, we are part of a movement that seeks to draw all people into the gracious, reconciling love of God through Jesus Christ. It is Christ’s call on our lives to know Him, to make Him known and in the process draw everyone into the life that is really life, the life lived with God and for the welfare of others and ourselves. Too often our Christianity is quiet, personal, merely a contained part of our lives. We tend to focus on our relationship with God, on our prayer life, on our call, on our experience of God. This is a wonderful and important part of the Christian life, but since no one can be a Christian on their own, it is important that we remember that we are part of a community and a specific kind of community at that. Jesus wants us to be known by our love for one another and so Christian community seeks both a vertical relationship with God and a horizontal relationship with others.

  • Correlation of Revelatory Spiritual Gifts and Nt Canonicity
TMSJ 8/1 (Spring 1997) 5-28 CORRELATION OF REVELATORY SPIRITUAL GIFTS AND NT CANONICITY Robert L. Thomas Professor of New Testament Paul uses portions of three of his epistles to develop the role of spiritual gifts in building the body of Christ. Among the eighteen gifts he lists are four that provide for the impartation of special revelation necessary for the body's growth: the gifts of apostleship, prophecy, the word of wisdom, and the word of knowledge. In discussions of NT canonicity, apostleship has been prominent, but a study of relevant passages shows that prophecy also played an important part in furnishing the early church with special revelation. Several NT examples, particularly the Apocalypse, reinforce this observation. In their efforts to single out books for inclusion in the NT canon, early Christian leaders looked for the works that were inspired, narrowing their search by concentrating on works by men whose spiritual gifts capacities included apostleship and prophecy. A number of early Christian writings verify their interest, not just in apostolicity, but also in the propheticity of a writing. After narrowing down their possibilities to works authored by apostles and prophets, they applied tests of antiquity, orthodoxy, catholicity, and traditional usage to finalize their list of NT books. * * * * * In three of his epistles—Romans, 1 Corinthians, and Ephesians—the apostle Paul speaks of God's building of the body of Christ through spiritual gifts He bestows on individual believers. Among the eighteen gifts that Paul mentions, are several that provided for special revelation to the church, revelation that would complement the inspired data available to early Christians in the OT.
