Mike Doughty: I wrote the song with Dan Wilson. I went out to LA—he moved to LA, or his wife made him move to LA, because she’s from Guam. And she’s like, Minneapo- lis for twenty-five years? No thanks! We’re moving to some place with better weather. Anyway, I wanted to write a Christmas song. The idea was to not write this Christmas- is-shitty-and-this-is-our-Christmas song. But to sort of be, to be genuinely emotional but not corny. To write something that’s resonant and real, and which also has sleigh bells on it, because that’s the indication of the genre. And so we wrote this thing. I thought it was great. But it had a note that I couldn’t sing. And so I was, like, I’ll do it as a harmony. I’ll get a female singer. And I though why not go for the gold? So I was just like, Hey, Rosanne, you want to sing this song? And she said yes. Rumpus: You didn’t know her? Doughty: I met her at a show. Actually, she said from the stage, “I’m a little nervous because Mike Doughty’s here and he’s such a great songwriter.” She’s very conscious of her iconic qualities. So I think she thought: I’m going to freak Mike Doughty out by saying this thing from the stage. (side note from an email from WFUV’s Rita Houston: “And the show they met at was our Holiday Cheer for FUV”) Paste and EW kick off the US love-fest for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds “While his brother Liam trundles on with the morose Beady Eye, Oasis’ better half delivers a bracingly kinetic solo salvo. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds folds throwback psychedelia, rootsy Americana, U2-esque arena rock, and ever-present Fab Four nods into one formidable Britpop monster. Noel’s brand of musical theft isn’t Liam’s smash-and-grab thuggery — rather, he’s a gentleman villain who knows exactly what to steal. Rating: B+” - Entertainment Weekly “The rote storyline that presents itself as a backdrop to Noel Gallagher’s solo debut is overwhelmingly obvious: Oasis splits, seemingly for good. Arch-brother Liam and the rest of the group form Beady Eye and release a largely dispassionate record, and in between legal sibling sparring, Noel unleashes a competing project, knowing but maybe not caring that the two are destined for endless and obsessive comparison. Of the two he always seemed less taken with the tabloid edge of things, but there’s cer- tainly a fire in his tortured gut on the aptly named High Flying Birds. Noel’s intention to make at least some manner of statement is bracingly apparent —the anthemic orchestral swellings and searching vocals of “Everybody’s On the Run” operate on the epic scale of Oasis’ most confident songs, while “If I Had A Gun” is the spiritual offspring of “Wonderwall” without being disappointingly deriva- tive of its mega-hit predecessor. While not everything has the focus of those standouts, there’s a bristling energy throughout as songs end in rave-ups, harrumph with lavish structure and otherwise revel in Noel’s appreciable compositional skill. Underneath the coke and yobbery, an earnest heart always beat within Oasis’ best work, and it’s this stream of their collective soul that Noel has always better tapped. For those diehard Noel partisans who feel like his vocals on “Acquiesce” might be the pivotal emotional mo- ment in the Oasis catalog, this album provides an extra measure of proof that he’s the more indispensible of that particular duo of mop-haired misanthropes. Listening to the lyrics of “(I Wanna Live A Dream In My) Re- cord Machine,” you almost forget that the moment of yearning it portrays comes not from a young artist strain- ing himself bloody for an audience, but instead someone who has been to the mountain and back a few times over. Coming from a band that derives a certain amount of its notoriety from seeming jaded and indifferent, Gallagher’s solo flight is actually stunningly pure and beautifully rendered.” - Paste Magazine Keep up with us at rightarmresource.com and facebook.com/rightarmresource RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY UPDATE - 11/9/11.

Some of these people have been involved in music for ten years or more, others not so long. The idea was to discuss background and development, as well as current and long-term musical projects. Benedict Moleta [email protected] Ben Stewart (Filmmaker) Were you born in Perth ? Yeah, I was born in Mt Lawley. You've been working on a music documentary for a while now, what's it about ? I started shooting footage mid 2008. I'm making a feature documentary about a bunch of bands over a period of time, it's an unscientific longitudinal study of sorts. It's a long process because I want to make an observational documentary with the narrative structure of a fiction film. I'm trying to capture a coming of age cliché but character arcs take a lot longer in real life. I remember reading once that rites of passage are good things to structure narratives around, so that's what I'm going to do, who am I to argue with a text book? Fair call. I guess one of the characteristics of bands developing or "coming of age" is that things can emerge, change, pass away and be reconfigured quickly.

  • Jill Furmanovsky Interview
Jill Furmanovsky interview SB: Where did you get your first break with rock photography? JF: I went to the Rainbow theatre which was a rock and roll venue in Finsbury Park. I had tickets to see the band Yes and I took the college camera and while I was there I thought if I had the college camera and it looked professional I might be able to go down and join the press photographers in the pit and that was indeed what I was able to do and I took one roll of film and at the end of the concert, two of the professional photographers offered me their job of their official Rainbow theatre photographer. Even though I was inexperienced, they said you'd get a pass - access all areas and your expenses but no fee, but who could refuse such an offer. SB: Was it difficult to capturing the moment in New York for the Madness picture that the NPG has? JF: Oh, Madness in New York, they were very misunderstood by the Americans, they did not understand the zany humour at all. I remember the band had just come downstairs from visiting Warner Brothers record company where all 8 of them piled into an elevator and poured out at the 15th floor, or wherever the reception was, and fell to the ground to worship the Warner Brothers logo, and the welcoming committee just stood there completely baffled. That's what I remember about Madness in New York, the Americans not understanding them. The other thing about Madness is that they set up their own shots and the photographer just has to wait and they would organise the entire thing.

  • Liam Gallagher Til Oslo Spektrum!
03-04-2018 10:02 CEST LIAM GALLAGHER TIL OSLO SPEKTRUM! Tidligere Oasis og Beady Eye-vokalist Liam Gallagher gjester Oslo Spektrum 29. november! Den britiske artisten er aktuell med sitt første soloalbum «As You Were». Billetter i salg fredag 6. april kl. 10.00. Allmusic var meget begeistret og beskriver musikken slik: «As You Were doesn't sound retro even though it is, in essence, a throwback to a throwback -- a re-articulation of Liam's '90s obsession with the '60s.» The Daily Mirror mener «As You Were' is the legendary rocker at his very best». Vi gleder oss enormt til å oppleve Liam Gallagher live i Oslo! Live Nation Norge er landets største konsertarrangør.

  • Oasis, the Psychology of Siblings, Rebirth and the Trickster's Cycle
Harvest (Online); Bi-Annual Don’t Look Back in Anger Volume 4(2); 2019 DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER: OASIS, THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SIBLINGS, REBIRTH AND THE TRICKSTER'S CYCLE Ari Katorza Historian, Music Critic & Cultural Studies Scholar, Sapir Academic College Israel Email: [email protected]; [email protected] Phone: 972-54-4791459 Abstract Popular music research was stretching for some decades from subcultures theories to music sociology; from traditional musicology to new musicology, and from cultural studies of modernist and post-modernist culture to semiotics and music aesthetics. Yet, there were hardly – to say at least – any researches concerning popular music bands of siblings and their music. In the 1990s, Oasis was the best-selling band in Britain. TheGallagher brothers, Noel and Liam, who led Oasis, epitomized the era of Britpop. It was a musical and cultural movement that was based on "returning to Englishness", and produced attractive and highly commercial rock music by indie bands. A crucial part of Oasis' success depended on the brothers' relationship. The siblings competed for leadership, control and attention. Their rivalry turned the media obsessed with the band. Journalistic historians of Britpop, Oasis' biographers and academics, have related to the 1990s, the Britpop movement, the band's well- publicized rivalry with Blur, the new post-Thatcherism euphoria, and the rise of Tony Blair and the New Labour, as all part of Oasis Phenomenon. However, I'd like to I understand Oasis' successful music from a different perspective, from a psychological point of view: as a product of the dysfunctional family syndrome, and especially the idea of brothers in a family and a musical unity.
