Table Tennis Strokes: Power, Rhythm and Speed Combinations
Table Tennis strokes: power, rhythm and speed combinations LI Xiaodong STROKE COMBINATION VS STROKE LINK Combination : Stroke combination as I understand it is relation between one ball and the following ball. This relation can between same kind of balls as well as between different kind of balls. The scope of combinations is very big. There are many combinations of rhythm, many combinations of power etc. Combinations can be more or less effective. I can play one ball with lot of power, the ball is coming back very fast, and if I try to play again with lot of power, it wouldn't be reasonable; usually it will not be as successful as for instance playing the next ball with medium power. An example of successful combination can be first powerful loop and then the spin loop with less power. Stroke link : The idea of stroke linking in fact is principally the same as stroke combination, however the idea of combination offers more variations. Linking is, as I understand it, continuous using of two various techniques, so this category is more limited. For example many people talk about linking attack with defence -'first attack, then defence', or 'first defence, then attack'. It is rather complicated. "First attack, then defence' link seems to be more difficult and is bigger challenge. Both links have differences - in attack you merely use your own power, in defence you 'borrow the power' a lot; in attack your centre of gravity is in front, in defence you centre of gravity is behind, in attack your swing is rather large, in defence your swing is short etc. -

An Interview with Ron Bolton Mbe
AN INTERVIEW WITH RON BOLTON MBE Question: Ron, you have just stepped down from the Management Committee of N&DTTA after over 50 years of service is that a sad occasion for you? Answer: No not really. I am now 89 years old and things have changed such a lot since I started playing. Whilst experience comes with age there is always a time to step aside for younger and more active people to play their part. Question: So what was it like when you first picked up a bat? Answer: It was at work actually, and I remember it well – 4th August 1939. I was 17 and just finishing my first day at work as a Civil Servant with the Ministry of Labour. The people in the office in Nottingham asked me if I was interested in a game of table tennis before going home. I just went along. There was not a lot else to do in those days because the War was on. We didn’t have TV or computers or mobile phones – just the radio and newspapers. Question: Did you come from a sporting family? Answer: No. Not really. I was really keen on cricket. My Headmaster at West Bridgford Grammar School was against my joining the Civil Service so if I had followed his advice everything could have changed. Jean my wife played tennis and badminton and I have a grandson who represents England at under-15 fencing, but that obviously came later. Question: What was it like playing in those days? Answer: Well, we all had hard bats – sponge had not been invented. -

The Spirit of Pong by Larry Hodges Copyright 2015 v07-03-15 Cover Illustration by Mike Mezyan of Mezyantt.com Bonus Short Story at End Ping-Pong Ambition The Spirit of Pong Dedication To table tennis players everywhere. Especially the spirited ones. 2 The Spirit of Pong Introduction This story was many years in the almost-making. I’m a professional table tennis coach & writer, and a professional science fiction & fantasy writer. What could be more natural than combining these two? Just about anything else. Let’s face it. Most stories about table tennis use the sport as a punch line. How could anyone take ping-pong seriously? But how about the Olympic Sport of Table Tennis? They really are the same thing, and you can call it either one. I actually like the stories that make fun of the sport! Those who know our sport know better. Those who don’t—well, why not take a quick trip to www.youtube.com, search for “Olympic Table Tennis,” and see what comes up? I’ve always wanted to combine the two, but it’s not easy finding a mix. I did write and sell “Ping-Pong Ambition,” the bonus short story at the end of this book. But I wanted something more serious. And then, one day, I mused over the idea of an American going to China to learn the secrets of table tennis . and this story was the result. This is not a conventional story, this is a fantasy. You will meet the spirits of a number of the past greats of our sport, and even the spirits of “what made them great” for some current and living players. -
