Featured here is a modern technique on a spiral hand tied bouquet. Transparency is achieved by the means of a Curly Willow armature strong enough to hold its shape while allowing the flowers to fill the negative space. Strong color showcasing Pantone’s color of the year “Ultraviolet” has quickly grabbed fans and an interesting mix of textures set the stage for something unique.

At almost four feet across, this design provided quite the room decor. The picture illustrates the top view of fresh and permanent botanicals attached to a transparent base of wound Grapevine. The stand on which this is supported is completely handmade using florist wire and Oasis Bind Wire made into an umbrella-like shape with support from the base.

This Companion display was featured during the 2015 AIFD National Symposium Presentation titled “, the Road Less Traveled”. In tall vessels, extensions of live Bamboo and copper tubing created a dynamic line while cut pieces of wood were stacked inside and made into stalagmites cascading from the lip. The Bamboo is planted. Copper tubing was also inserted into the soil with wood and moss layered to mimic the natural horizontal pattern of the Bamboo. 8 | TEXAS in Bloom | June 2018 FRIDAY California Association of of Association California of Association California Flower Growers & Shippers Growers Flower & Shippers Growers Flower Christopher White, a New York based York a New White, Christopher His creative Texas. returns to designer, as publications, known well for stylings, as his understanding of the relationship well interior and floral environments between His ability to bringsto this experience. depth information the design share applying while components will add great needed business detailed the study carefully for all who value elements of this workshop. Meet Fabian Salcedo SATURDAY

Fabian Salcedo has been in the floral industry for twelve years. Having accidentally stumbled across a love for floral design, he knew he had found a passion to explore. He graduated from the of Texas with a BA in psychology in 2005. It was not long after graduation that he attended the Floral Design Institute in Seattle. Once back in Austin, he began his career washing buckets and processing while learning from two great mentors. This mentorship, combined with great talent, led to his Texas Designer of the Year win in 2008. These life experiences provided him the confidence and skills needed to ultimately open F2 Floral Design, an event based floral studio, in the summer of 2014.

Education continued through his membership and participation in Texas State Florists’ Association. His willingness to assist others in design education is seen at the highest levels. Salcedo's distinctive style was shared in 2016 when he presented at the World Center and later that year at the Texas Floral Forum. Today Fabian spends his time in China in product development and at home in Austin in creative development of an expanding business. SATURDAY Dining with Tutera

19 | TEXAS in Bloom | June 2018 Experience Expo Education Jacob McCall took center stage during the Texas Floral Expo last July sharing sympathy styled designs. Here he shares the how to’s and a few details to assist you in creating.

Using a very sturdy easel, I deconstructed two grapevine wreaths, basically pulling them apart in a spiral motion. I then attached them onto the easel in their natural motion, not trying to manipulate the vine too much, as the grapevine has gorgeous lines. Once the focal areas became apparent, I attached small funeral cages with zip ties. I used 10 different colored bunches of wheat bound beautifully with Smithers- Oasis aluminum wire in copper or Using a Smithers-Oasis mache cross as the base, chocolate. By: Jodi McShan AAF TMF his is an article outlining when you should and should not recommend florals for sympathy occasions. I invite you to take a moment and think back to a time when perhaps you overheard your salesperson finishing up a call “Thank you, Ms. Green. I’m sure they will love this design. We will send your selection to the T family while they are sitting Shiva.” You look down at the order and think all is good! $300.00 and a happy customer…but wait…with this order and the decisions made we just helped our customer to insult the recipient!

There are times in sales that we do much more than sell flowers! We educate our customers on traditions as well as cultural and religious differences. We assist them with an expression knowing that flowers speak volumes when words oftentimes cannot. We all know to instruct our customers not to send an easel to the family member’s office. In the information shared are other situations to consider. In today’s world, our customers send flowers to friends and families from different religions and traditions providing untold opportunities. With each opportunity comes responsibility. We must be the expert to assist our customers with these most important decisions. Flowers are most often the perfect way to express love and sympathy. We simply must know when it is perfect and when our idea of perfection might offend. Below is a brief outline to help you guide your customers to correctly express their sentiments.

Protestant Christian Services In the Protestant faith it is common to hold a viewing, referred by some as the visitation, prior to the service. This event is most often held at the funeral home even if the service follows the next day at the church. Most recently, viewings are sometimes held just prior to the actual service. Flowers of any and all colors are welcome unless specifically prohibited by the selected church. Flowers are often sent to the viewing or visitation, the service, or to the family home following the service. In the event that an easel or a design with a small water source is selected the flowers may not be at their best for the service. Your customer will thank you for guiding them through this process. The scheduled visitation and service times relate to what designs will look best depending on when the condolences are best represented. A reminder that the funeral home will ensure that the flowers are transported to the church service and then to the burial is often appreciated.

Today, many families choose cremation and thus recommendations of floral arrangements 22 | TEXAS in Bloom | June 2018 rather than easel designs are best in that there is most often no gravesite. Each design captures an emotion bringing to TIMELESS light a lifetime of memories. A celebration of life, today oftentimes, replaces the traditional visitation and funeral service. These ideas provide sentimental creativity to capture the unspoken words and TREASURES express through flowers the untold feelings of family and friends.

“MEMORIES OF STORIES TOLD AND WORDS UNSPOKEN”

A Park Hill cottage chair is decorated with a floral garland fashioned from Park Hill hanging bottles on string. Bottles give the floral garland a water source for longer life. After the celebration the chair becomes a lasting remembrance as an accessory for the home adding value to the remembrance. “A GATHERING OF MEMORIES” This metal picking basket by Park Hill Collection is designed with concentric rings of fresh flowers that will slowly dry in place to create a lasting floral design providing timeless enjoyment. The tight placement and using flowers with good drying characteristics ensures success.

“A TRIBUTE TO EVERLASTING LOVE” Dryable fresh flowers are simply bundled and tied up to dry on a Park Hill Collection Tobacco leaf drying basket. Each bundle has a hang tag with a personal note referring to a special memory and reflecting the symbolic nature of each flower selected in the basket. For example: “ these are the same flowers I gave you the day I asked you if you would marry me”. The design is simple, but the combined sentiment can be a powerful and a very moving personal tribute. An A-frame ladder replaces the traditional wire or wooden easel.

“PACKING FOR THE JOURNEY” A set of 3 vintage style suitcases from Park Hill Collection are stacked containing a fresh flower tribute as well as an ideal place to display personal items from the deceased. Perhaps an old pocket watch is added to the design, a hat, or even an old favorite pair of shoes. It is a thoughtful way to offer a more personal approach to memorial tributes that families may help create. B TSFA Order Exchange Network A Y Support Your Advertisers!
