Bevis, Ph.D. Major Departmeilt: Bioenvironmental Engineering A study was performed of the kinds, levels, and distribution of gamma-emitting radionuclides in the Florida environment. The investiga- tion was Initiated because of the unusual levels and characteristic 137 and geographical patterns of cesium-137 ( Cs) found in Florida milk forage in earlier studies. Beef and yegetabl'is were selected as the most important media for sampling. Sampling was carried out in May and June, 1966, and during January through July, 1967. Analyses were performed by gamma spectroscopy on triturated whole samples. Complex gamma spectra were interpreted in simultaneous terms of the individual contributing components by use of the equations method. 137 The most significant gamma-emitting radionuclide present was Cs, and the evaluation of the data was concentrated on this nuclide. showed geographical Levels of "''^''cs in both beef and vegetables patterns of variation similar to those reported earlier by others in Florida milk. Maximum levels were found in the central and southern and parts of the State, with intermediate levels in the northeastern Ix north central parts of the State, and the lowest levels in the northwestern part of the State. In addition, vegetable samples showed a marked differ- ence from southeast to southwest, with average levels in the southeastern part of the State as low as in the northwestern part. The levels of Cs in lower-quality meat from animals that had fed primarily on grass were much higher than those in high-quality meat from feed-lot animals. These levels were higher than any other levels reported in beef in the conterminous United States. 137 There was no apparent difference in Cs concentrations between leafy, fruit, and root categories

(1964-1966) are interpolated for specific locations from objectively analyzed charts. Time sections arc constructed using these values, and the relationship of the time sections to the sequence of synoptic charts is discussed. Values from weekly 5-, and 2, and 0.4-mb. synoptic analyses (1964-65) are used in making vertical comparisons with the 50- and 10-mb. values. Monthly means and standard deviations of daily values from these monthly means are calculated and are com- pared with similar parameters derived directly from data. Comparisons of these statistical parameters are made for three geographical sections: 1) a north-south section near SOOW., 2) an east-west section across North America in middle latitudes, and 3) an east-west section across the Western Hemisphere at high latitudes. Reiter Department of Atmospheric Science Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado September 1966 Atmospheric Science Paper No. 103 ABSTRACT In this study an attempt is made to explain the physical bases for seasonal and short-term radioactive fallout variations. Previous investigations have shown that large amounts of contaminated strato­ spheric air enter the troposphere in association with pronounced cyclo­ genesis at jet stream level. The validity of this mechanism is verified by a statistical analysis of fallout changes compared with 300 mb cir­ culation variations over a two-year period. These analyses also demon­ strated that it is not possible to explain the spring fallout peaks on the basis of increased stratospheric-tropospheric mass exchange at that time of the year. It is concluded that the seasonal variation results from characteristics of the stratospheric circulation. As a way of examining the above conclusion, various aspects of the stratospheric transport problem are investigated. Detailed eddy 0 0 0 covariance values at 50 , 60 , and 70 N are computed from 10 January to 20 February 1958 with particular emphasis on the correlation between eddy meridional and vertical wind components. The results indicate that this eddy correlation becomes strongly negative after the polar night vortex breakdown, thus providing a powerful mechanism for northward and downward debris transport in late winter.
