His 52 hits and 32 runs scored each served % - Spring Break Trip (Phoenix & Tucson, Ariz.) as team-bests, while Nelson added nine RBIs. • Nelson totaled 64 bases and posted .451 slugging and .401 on-base percentages. The sophomore only struck out five times, which placed him 12th in NCAA Division II in the toughest to strikeout category (28.4 at-bats per strikeout) at the end SETTING THE SCENE of the regular season. Opponents: Washburn (Feb. 13) Emporia State (Feb. 14-15) • Bemidji State ended the season 29-of-39 in stolen bases, which was led by sophomore Bo Schmitz with eight. Location: Topeka, Kan. / Emporia, Kan. • BSU’s pitching staff compiled a 2014 season ERA of 5.98, recording 204 strikeouts on the mound. Game Times: Feb. 13 - 12/2 p.m. • Senior Tyler Saeugling led pitchers with 47 strikeouts in his 61.1 innings of work on the mound and compiled a 4-5 record. Feb. 14 - 1/3 p.m. Saeugling ended the 2014 campaign with a 3.82 ERA. Feb. 15 - 12 p.m. Fields: Falley Field / Glennen Field About Washburn: • The Washburn University Ichabods went 26-24 in 2014 and finished seventh in the MIAA at 22-18. They lost in the first round of the MIAA tournament. MULTIMEDIA • Washburn was picked ninth in the MIAA preseason coaches’ poll. Live Stats: • Kyle Carnahan is Washburn’s leading returner at the plate. He led the MIAA with a .513 on-base percentage. • Parker Gibson finished third in the MIAA with 22 stolen bases, which led the squad that went 57-of-78. He returns as a junior center fielder. TEAM INFORMATION • Junior catcher David Gauntt was named first team all-MIAA last year. He finished 10th in the MIAA with eight home runs and 2014 Record: 21-22 (.488) led the team with a .569 slugging percentage. NSIC Record: 15-15 (.500) (9th place) • The Ichabods put together a .297 batting average on the season and recorded 22 homeruns. Letterwinners Returning/Lost: 25 / 9 • Two returning pitchers are projected to be in Washburn’s starting rotation. Senior Eric Schmid went 1-3 with a 3.76 ERA in Newcomers: 11 10 starts last year and sophomore Maustin Otterstatter led the staff with a 4.00 ERA. Record versus the NSIC: 94-166 • Emporia State went 23-5 over their last 30 games of 2014 as the Hornets advanced to the NCAA Central Regional Cham- pionship game for the first time since 2009. Assistants: • They came through the loser’s bracket to win the MIAA Tournament Championship and again dropped their opener in the Matt Ellinghuysen Bemidji State ‘13 (2nd Season) regional before coming back to play for the regional title. The Hornets were 7-1 in post-season elimination games last year. Scott Seaton Bemidji State (3rd Season) • ESU returns seven of eight position players from last season, with the only new position player coming at shortstop. • The Hornets return their top three starters from last year based on ERA. Shawn Talkington went 9-2 with a 2.85 ERA in 13 starts with 76 strikeouts and just 17 walks. Jarrod Miller was 7-6 with a 3.63 ERA in 15 starts and led the MIAA in strikeouts with 77.
