Take 2 Timothy for example. The whole letter is set against a very discouraging background of imprisonment and widespread apostasy. Or take 2 Corinthians. In chapter 1, Paul talks of being ‘so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself’ (verse 8). But as he looks back on a dreadful time, he concludes that ‘this was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly a peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again’ (vv 9-10). As we come towards the end of the third lockdown, I’m very conscious of the unremitting pressure on church leadership teams to keep ministering online, while individual members have to balance this with care for their families, and all in the relative isolation of lockdown. On top of this comes the need to plan for a changed future when there are still so many unknowns.

  • St Nick's News
St Nick’s News The Parish Magazine of St Nicholas of Myra, Brighton: Sept 2020 1 St Nick’s News The Parish Magazine of St Nicholas of Myra, Brighton: Sept 2020 From the Vicar Dear Sisters and Brothers, In this first edition of the parish magazine since our return to worship in church, our editor includes a series of pieces on the experience of ‘coming back’ to St Nick’s. I am very pleased we can share these reflections here, both by way of encouragement for those of you who may be considering a return to church; and also as a historical record of this remarkable period in our history. I struggle to offer a simple vignette from my own experience of ‘coming back’. This is partly because I am still processing the events of the last six months, attempting to comprehend what it means for us to have withdrawn to our homes; to have lived daily in the shadow of this disease, and to have lost our habitual contact with those we love. This all takes time. As a parish priest, I am also still trying to make sense of the complete closure of our church buildings, although this has not happened in many other European countries; and why the clergy have been instructed to abstain from so much pastoral and sacramental ministry, although our own government has designated us as key workers. I will write no more about this here, because my words will be unformed and tinged with frustration. If you are interested in reading a set of critical perspectives more articulate than my own about the current state of the Church of England, you can find some here: https://allthingslawfulandhonest.wordpress.com/ 2 St Nick’s News The Parish Magazine of St Nicholas of Myra, Brighton: Sept 2020 Remaining in the present, I am delighted that we have been able to re- open church, and are now able to come together for worship.

  • The Report of the Archbishop of Canterbury's Commission
THE REPORT OF THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY’S COMMISSION ON THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE CHANNEL ISLANDS TO THE WIDER CHURCH OF ENGLAND 30 September 2019 Letter from the Chair of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Commission on the relationship of the Channel Islands to the wider Church of England, the Right Revd & Rt Hon the Lord Chartres, GCVO PC Dear Archbishop, At the beginning of the work of the Commission you insisted that we should not seek to pass judgement on the unhappy sequence of events which precipitated the breakdown of relations between the Diocese of Winchester and the Deaneries of Guernsey and Jersey. Rather we were to focus on the possibility and shape of a future relationship conducive to the mutual flourishing of the Church in the Islands and the wider Church of England. We were charged to consult with the ecclesiastical and secular authorities in the Islands, with the Bishop of Winchester, his staff and other interested parties. This we have endeavoured to do. In the Report which follows we have proposed a way forward which, I believe, honours the polity of the Church of England and in particular the enhanced level of accountability of its bishops in the light of recent legislation but which also recognises and respects the traditions, both legal and ecclesiastical, which obtain in the Channel Islands. Our recommendations for action are attached. I have been very fortunate to be joined in this Commission by Baroness Judith Wilcox and Sir Christopher Clarke. After a distinguished business and political career, Baroness Wilcox has been able to offer a shrewd analysis of the context for our work while Sir Christopher Clarke with his extensive experience as a former Judge of the Courts of Appeal in Guernsey and Jersey, and Lord Justice of Appeal, has contributed an invaluable legal perspective.

  • Bishop's Statement for Christ Church Cockfosters
THE RT REVD ROBERT WICKHAM BISHOP OF EDMONTON 27 Thurlow Road, London, NW3 5PP [email protected] Tel: 0203 837 5250 Bishop’s Statement for Christ Church Cockfosters Christ Church is a vibrant Church, serving the exciting community of Cockfosters. We have an impressive history of numerical and spiritual growth, where there is a significant “can do” attitude within the leadership of the Church, along with a desire to not coast. The Church building, hall and people all point towards God’s interaction with the local community, and speak loudly of a local church which has, at its root, a missionary zeal for our locality, a desire to offer good and thoughtful teaching and preaching, and a desire to offer a pastoral place of welcome and hospitality. Clearly, Christ Church has reached an important moment in its ministry, and I believe there to be four main challenges which the new priest will need to address. These are: Firstly, building upon a solid platform, we are looking for a new priest who will focus upon developing our healthy models for church growth, in partnership with other churches in the area. There is a great scope to work with the Senior Staff of the Diocese and others in the Deanery to enable this growth, aided by the pioneering work of the Bishop of Islington. The new priest must take seriously the need to discern new forms of Church presence, and be excited by the possibility of new forms of church which continue to reach out to the wider community in mission.
