President’s Message It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this 67th annual Prince George and District Music Festival (PGDMF). It gives our music students the opportunity to share their talent with all of us and to gain inspiration and knowledge from the adjudicators. I hope we will all enjoy this experience. Many thanks to the PGDMF executive, directors, committee members, parents and all of the other volunteers who have helped make this event happen. Sincere thanks also to our generous sponsors, donors and advertisers. It is your work and support that ensure the success of this festival and encourage our youth as they develop their musical talents. Our festival will conclude with two great concerts at Vanier Hall on Saturday, March 10th, 2018. These concerts will feature the most outstanding performances, as selected by our adjudicators during the festival. The Showcase Recital at 5:30PM consists of our Junior performers. Admission is free. The Gala Concert at 8:00 PM features notable performances from all levels and disciplines. Gala Tickets are available at Studio 2880 and at the door. And now I invite you all to come, sit back, and enjoy the beautiful music that will be performed for us during this 67th Annual Prince George & District Music Festival. Participants shall be under the management of the Prince George & District Music Festival Executive. Any questions not dealt with in these rules shall be referred to the Festival Executive through the Secretary (in writing), and the decisions of the Executive shall be final and binding on all concerned. 2. The Festival Committee reserves the right to cancel any of the arrangements detailed in the Syllabus or Program as it deems necessary. 3. Prince George & District Music Festival is not liable for any personal loss or injury incurred at any festival venue. Music 9. Pieces must be chosen from the syllabi of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Conservatory Canada, Suzuki Strings Books or any other recognized examination syllabus. Enter selection(s) at the appropriate grade/level. Participants may not enter the same piece(s) in successive years. 10. All selections and composers must be indicated on the original entry form. Performance of pieces other than those stated on the entry form will result in disqualification from the competition. TBA is permitted in Choral classes only. However, please note: The Choral Director requires 1 original copy of all selections to be performed 2 weeks prior to the Choral Festival date. 11. It is strongly recommended that solo participants perform from memory. 12. Bar numbers at the beginning of each line must be indicated on the music. 13. Participants must bring to the performance an original copy of each piece of music for the adjudicator’s use; be certain you obtain sufficient original copies for use by performers, accompanists, and the adjudicator. You must provide proof of purchase for each piece or copy of downloaded music. 14. Photocopied or handwritten music will not be passed to adjudicators and clinicians, unless it is accompanied by written permission from the copyright owner or publisher. The following information is based on the Canadian Copyright Act: ◦ Photocopying for page turns: This requires permission from the copyright owner or publisher (please note that the Frederick Harris Music Company has granted permission for festival participants to “use one photocopy of one page of their Frederick Harris Music Company original score, for the purpose of facilitating a page turn.”). ◦ Works in the public domain/long-dead composers: Copyright exists in both a musical composition and in the physical notation of a musical score. Therefore, the following rules apply: ▪ Composers who have been dead fifty years or more: you may copy scores by hand without written permission. Photocopying still requires written permission from the copyright owner or publisher. ▪ Living composers, or those who have been dead fewer than fifty years: Both photopopying and hand-copying require written permission from the copyright owner
