President’s Message It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this 67th annual Prince George and District Music Festival (PGDMF). It gives our music students the opportunity to share their talent with all of us and to gain inspiration and knowledge from the adjudicators. I hope we will all enjoy this experience. Many thanks to the PGDMF executive, directors, committee members, parents and all of the other volunteers who have helped make this event happen. Sincere thanks also to our generous sponsors, donors and advertisers. It is your work and support that ensure the success of this festival and encourage our youth as they develop their musical talents. Our festival will conclude with two great concerts at Vanier Hall on Saturday, March 10th, 2018. These concerts will feature the most outstanding performances, as selected by our adjudicators during the festival. The Showcase Recital at 5:30PM consists of our Junior performers. Admission is free. The Gala Concert at 8:00 PM features notable performances from all levels and disciplines. Gala Tickets are available at Studio 2880 and at the door. Participants shall be under the management of the Prince George & District Music Festival Executive. Any questions not dealt with in these rules shall be referred to the Festival Executive through the Secretary (in writing), and the decisions of the Executive shall be final and binding on all concerned. 2. The Festival Committee reserves the right to cancel any of the arrangements detailed in the Syllabus or Program as it deems necessary. 3. Prince George & District Music Festival is not liable for any personal loss or injury incurred at any festival venue. Music 9. Pieces must be chosen from the syllabi of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Conservatory Canada, Suzuki Strings Books or any other recognized examination syllabus. Enter selection(s) at the appropriate grade/level. Participants may not enter the same piece(s) in successive years. 10. All selections and composers must be indicated on the original entry form. Performance of pieces other than those stated on the entry form will result in disqualification from the competition. TBA is permitted in Choral classes only. However, please note: The Choral Director requires 1 original copy of all selections to be performed 2 weeks prior to the Choral Festival date. 11. It is strongly recommended that solo participants perform from memory. 12. Bar numbers at the beginning of each line must be indicated on the music. 13. Participants must bring to the performance an original copy of each piece of music for the adjudicator’s use; be certain you obtain sufficient original copies for use by performers, accompanists, and the adjudicator. You must provide proof of purchase for each piece or copy of downloaded music. 14. Photocopied or handwritten music will not be passed to adjudicators and clinicians, unless it is accompanied by written permission from the copyright owner or publisher. The following information is based on the Canadian Copyright Act: ◦ Photocopying for page turns: This requires permission from the copyright owner or publisher (please note that the Frederick Harris Music Company has granted permission for festival participants to “use one photocopy of one page of their Frederick Harris Music Company original score, for the purpose of facilitating a page turn.”). ◦ Works in the public domain/long-dead composers: Copyright exists in both a musical composition and in the physical notation of a musical score. Therefore, the following rules apply: ▪ Composers who have been dead fifty years or more: you may copy scores by hand without written permission.     A Bronx Tale Synopsis A Bronx Tale, a new musical set in the early 1960s, is based on the autobiographical play written by Chazz Palminteri. It tells the coming-of-age story of Calogero Anello, a young boy from a working class family who finds himself caught between his loving father and a charismatic mob boss. In Act One, Calogero witnesses Sonny, the mob boss, murdering someone right in front of his house on Belmont Avenue; Calogero covers for Sonny when questioned by the NYPD. Calogero’s father, Lorenzo, who is an MTA bus driver, wants to instill a strong sense of right and wrong in his son, but Calogero goes against his father’s wishes. After Sonny is released by the police with no charges against him, he takes Calogero under his wing and helps him get involved with the “glamorous” world of organized crime. Sometime later, Calogero is all grown up and a full prodigy of Sonny, but his father has no idea he has continued to see Sonny. Calogero has also developed a group of Italian- American friends that Sonny thinks is a bad influence over him and encourages Calogero to stick to his schoolwork. Calogero meets an African-American girl, Jane, on Webster Avenue which is a very different side of the Bronx than where Calogero lives. He asks his father for advice on what he should do when he and Jane go on a date. Calogero’s father doesn’t exactly approve of him going out with Jane because he is concerned for his son’s safety, considering the high racial tensions on the time period, but Lorenzo still gives him advice.

    A WORD FROM THE PRODUCERS Michael Holzer Jacque Carnahan One year ago, we came together at the Gershwin Theatre for the very first Arts for Autism concert. Dozens of Broadway actors joined more than 150 young performers to take part in a show that inspired, educated and entertained us. It was uplifting to see so many passionate artists collaborate to raise awareness, encourage acceptance and to celebrate the power of the arts. We also witnessed the Broadway debut of Gina Hitsos, a young singer with autism who found her voice through the magic of music. There was an infectious feeling of love, excitement and optimism as everyone left the theatre that night. After a year of planning and projects we are back! We have many new and exciting developments since last June. After debuting a special arrangement of “Defying Gravity” in last year’s concert, we released a music video to share the beautiful message with an even wider audience. In February, we ventured out to the Ice Plant Recording studios in Queens with three former Broadway Elphabas from Wicked to reimagine the song we know and love. You can find the video on our website at ArtsForAutism.net. In May, we joined Autism Speaks at MetLife Stadium for the Northern New Jersey Walk. We were thrilled to be there and show our support. Jacque and our talented musicians serenaded and entertained the walkers; it was wonderful to see firsthand the positive impact that music can have. Now it’s June, and here we are again at the Gershwin Theatre.

    NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOLS OF THEATRE ANNUAL MEETING 2017 Keynote Address An Independent Study Richard Oberacker Composer and Music Director It seems traditional to open a lot of keynote addresses with a quote, usually a poem on the secrets of the universe. Maybe Shakespeare. I'm going to quote a restaurant owner. And I'm not even going to give him the dignity of an exact quote. I'm paraphrasing. Danny Meyer is the owner of Union Square Cafe, Shake Shack, many other restaurants, and one of the most successful hospitality consulting firms the world has ever known. A lot of publishers came after him to write the definitive book on hospitality management. He said—and here's the pseudo quote—I can't just write down some secret formula. But I'm willing to tell you the story of my life, the choices I made, what happened because of those choices, and if anything in there inspires someone to change their business approach to be more successful, then that's pretty cool. And that's what he did. The book is called Setting the Table, and I highly recommend it. It'll change your approach to all management situations, and you'll never look at eating in a restaurant the same way again. But this is theater. Lunch is later. When I was asked about speaking to a gathering of the greatest theater educators in our country, I thought, "What the hell are they thinking?" But my experience in college was unique. And what I do with it—how I view the world because of it—is also unique.

Back in 2005, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul were undergraduates at the University of Michigan who were feeling dissatisfied with the roles they were being cast in for their college shows. Deciding to do something about it, Pasek and Paul (who had casually written only a couple of songs together at this point) decided to produce their own show -- an original piece called Edges that would be made up entirely of songs they would write and would star fellow college students.
