  • THE IRISH LEGISLATIVE GENDER QUOTA: Analysing Implementation & Outcome
Bachelor Dissertation Seán Dunleavy - 15006816 European Studies – Faculty of Management & Organization The Hague University of Applied Sciences ………. THE IRISH LEGISLATIVE GENDER QUOTA: Analysing Implementation & Outcome ………. 08/01/2019 Supervisor: Dr. Krijtenburg Word count: 20,056 i The Irish Legislative Gender Quota: Analysing Implementation & Outcome Sean Dunleavy Executive Summary The title of this dissertation, “the Irish Legislative Gender Quota: Analysing Implementation & Outcome”, is specifically related to the Electoral (Amendment) (Political Funding) Act 2012, which requires political parties to field at least 30 percent candidates from the minority represented sex, with penalty for failure to comply resulting in a halving of state funding. Overall, given the difficulties observed during the 2016 general election campaign, and indeed now again in preparation for the next election, it is important to understand if these reforms are solely responsible for achieving increased female representation. Why difficulties during selection conventions are occurring, and how they can be best overcome. The main question is as follows: ‘Has the introduction of state mandated gender quotas for political party election candidates in the Republic of Ireland had the desired effects both in terms of implementation and ultimate outcome?’ Both qualitative and quantitative methods of research were conducted for this dissertation report. Qualitative research was used to collect and analyse, with the work of Irish academics Buckley, of University College Cork, Galligan, of Queen's University Belfast, & McGing, of Maynooth University, found to be of particular importance when detailing any aspect specific to Ireland. The majority of reviewed literature publications would take the form of academic journals and government sponsored publications.

  • Royal Canal News January 1975 No.2
No.2. JANUARY, Royal Canal News 1975 RESTORATION - THE WAY AHEAD The past year was a momentous one for the Royal Canal and the developments that took place rose directly from the public meeting held in Maynooth at the end of 1973. There is every reason to be thankful to the organizers of that meeting for bringing together, at what has since transpired was a crucial time in the canal’s history, representatives of so many interested bodies. The events of 1974 are recorded in this and the September newsletter, but what of the future? Voluntary participation in .restoration work is increasing and will undoubtedly continue to do so, and further assistance from C.I.E. is almost certainly assured. What is needed most urgently, though, is the commitment of the Government to the eventual restoration of the whole of the canal. Restoration of the 53 miles from Dublin to Mullingar is implied in the decision of the Minister for Local Government regarding Mc Nead's Bridge, but the remaining 37 miles form the vital link to the Shannon. The first 17 miles of the latter section from Mullingar, via Ballinea, Shandonagh, Coolnahay and Ballynacargy to Abbeyshrule have, until now, remained free from obstructions to possible future navigation. It is imperative that this situation be maintained and that Westmeath County Council be persuaded to think again about their plans to culvert the canal at Shandonagh and Ballinea bridges. Unfortunately, the final 20 miles from Abbeyshrule to Cloondara have suffered at the hands of Longford County Council but the position is nowhere near as bad as would appear at first sight.

National Conference Ar Aghaidh Le Cheile Unity Begins with You 15th – 17th April 2021 #yfg21 Contents President’s Foreword National Executive Report Policy and Campaigns Committee Report Agricultural Group Report Coiste na Gaeilge International Committee Report Women’s Network Report National Executive Attendance Nominations for National Executive Steering Committee National Executive 2019 – 2021 Conference Itinerary Principles and Values Motions Resolutions Constitutional Amendments Standing Orders Project Officer for YFG Report Welcome from the President On behalf of the Young Fine Gael National Executive, I am delighted to welcome you to the 31st Young Fine Gael National Conference. This year’s Conference will be the first YFG National Conference in the organisation’s 44-year history to be held online, and I also hope that it will be the last. The pandemic has forced all of us in YFG to adapt quickly and dynamically to remain relevant and on this front, I believe we have succeeded. Our policies and campaigns have focussed on advocating for sensible, practical solutions to issues relevant to young people. We have sought to modernise Young Fine Gael through the relaunch of our website, the expansion of our social media presence to new platforms and a larger audience and the launch of the YFG Women’s Network, placing a renewed focus on the importance of greater female participation in politics. For the first time in its history, YFG was forced to run the entirety of its recruitment campaign online as Ireland went into lockdown. Despite the challenges we faced, our branches across the country can take pride in the fact that together, we delivered YFG’s first year-on-year increase in membership since 2016.
