Dear Bill :

On Friday, October 15, Irnmark Stations celebrated the Grand .Opening of our new Sylva, North Carolina location. You may already know that WKSF helped promote this event with a radio remote from 11 am to 2 pm. My purpose in writing you is to let you know how pleased we were with the service provided by your staff.

Carmelita Gray has been our account rep for more than 5 years, working exceptionally well with both Enmark and a number of different media buyers over the years. Not only did she come to the radio remote - she arrived ea~1y and stayed throughout the entire event -- despite being under the weather! Mitch Ensley also did a great job. He worked with us to place the KISS inflatable logo,.van, table and booth for maximum function and effect, and also interacted well with customers .

You are fortunate to have enticed Peter Clay to move south from Michigan . He is one of the best (if not the best) Disc Jockeys we have ever had host a radio remote. Peter is as enthusiastic and genuine in person as his "on air' personality.

What a great team these three individuals make . Please extend to all of them our thanks for helping make our Grand Opening such a successful event.

Mr. Keith Urban c% Capitol Records 3322 West End Avenue, F1 I l Nashville, TN 37203

Dear Keith Urban:

I send you both sincere thanks and deep apology. The difficulties oftransportation and resulting fallout aside, your trip to Asheville was a success.

A success because it showed that you are a man with a heart, a man willing to reach out, go the extra mile(s), to help individuals and families for whom the bus to comfort and security has made no stop.

It was a success because your performance, though short, was very well received by the audience. Those who had a previous appreciation for your artistic ability were thrilled. Those who had not heard you before knew when you sang that they were in the presence ofa talented, professional artist.

The band, while good musicians, did not seem to have the depth of character and understanding that you exhibited. That travel difficulties beyond your control made you late, and that the audience wanted to hear more of you, had no impact on them .

They put me, in what we call here, "between a rock and a hard place." In that spot, I did what I could in the moment -- possibly the wrong thing -- and you got the brunt oftheir lack of consideration for the bigger picture. For that, I send my apology.

Please go to the last cut on the enclosed C.D. Know that you have been, and are, one "who stands and helps fight that lean wolf standing at my door".

With sincere gratitude and respect,

To: Station her WKSF

I would like to thank you and your entire staff for the effort that was put into making the "Spa Survivor" promotion a success for David's Home Entertainment& Recreation. I feel that an all out efffort was put forth by all the people involved to make this a great promotion. I had the opportunity to meet and talk with many ofthe on air and support staffofyour station during our time'at the fair, and found everyone to be very courtious, friendlyand helpful. P. J. worked very hard and spent a lot oftime communicatingwith me to make sure things were the way they were suppose to be at the fair, and the ads promoting the event were to my satisfaction. She has worked closely with me to ensure the total promotion for David's results in' more sales in the future. I feel P. J. is a real asset to your sales staff I would also like to extend a very sincere "Thank You" to Peter Clay for all the work he did. I found Peter to be very professional, and he worked hard to make sure everything was in place at the proper time, and tliat all contestants were treated equally. Peter's excitement and personality was expressed well during his live broadcast from the fair; and I feel he had a big impact on the "spa survivor" promotion. ;.~eter is the kind of person that gives 110%, to make a promotion ~rork as it should. He is a great asset to your company. Again, I lookforward to doing business with your station in' the future.

Dear Caroline,

How smooth you made the path for MANNA FoodBank in the recent "Pepsi Heart of Summer Sale." Thanks for your patience and experience, Caroline. We were grateful for your help in publicizing the event for MANNA and Pepsi -- and particularly glad for the call-in you arranged with Chuck and dame on such short notice. That particular KISS Country piece often was the reason folks came out. Good jar

It was a big success! The $5182 is indeed the highest income we have ever enjoyed from the summer sale. Please do share this thanks with others in your office who may be unseen by us btrt are also unsung heroes, having contributed in some way to this success. (The food drive, as I reported raised less than 200 pounds of product, and yet it is always a good visuat reminder of what MANNA FoodBank is about.)

I hope we will be in touch for another "Pepsi Heart of Summer Sale" next year. Together we make a difference in our WNC communities. Thank you.

Thank you for the wonderful publicity KISS-FM and WWNC provided Eblen Charities for the 2~ Annual Heroes for Hope Poker. Because ofyour support, the event was a tremendous success, drawing nearly 100 more participants than the previous year. We cannot thank you enough for all that you do for Eblen. Please enjoy these event t-shirts or share them with others at the station.

As with other Eblen-sponsored fundraising events, 100% ofthe proceeds go directly towards providing assistance to western North Carolinians living with the effects of illnesses and medical disabilities . Last year, Eblen assisted more than 10,000 families and individuals with needs such as medical care, prescription assistance, utilities, food, taavel assistance, and dental care for children.

Thank you so much for all your efforts in coordinating sponsors for our College NightII, program at the Asheville Mall on September 20. Without your hard work and the generous contributions of your advertisers, it would have been impossible for us to have had the monetary support to make this the truly great occasion it was. I wish you could have seen the results of your efforts! There were hundreds, actually~i thousands, of parents and teenagers packed in the mall all evening hunting for material thatl~ would lead them to that perfect opportunity for life after high school. Questions were asked and answered by the "experts" that made parents and students feel much better about the educational decisions they were making.

Dear Diane,

We would like to thank you for the recognition that KISS FM provided to the fire department by awarding us the Appreciation Luncheon on November 19, 2001. The meal was outstanding and al) of the members and staffin attendance felt honored to be treated to this meal and receive the recognition. It was great to have Chuck Findley and Peter Clay deliver the plaque and the meal to the fire station

Although we at the fire department know that ourjob is to protect and serve the community of Blaclc Mountain, and take that responsibility in stride, it is nice to be shown support and appreciation from KISS FM and all those businesses and organizations that sponsor this recognition program.

We hardly think of ourselves as heroes, but we are proud to serve such a great community as the Swannanoa Valley and WNC in general. The Fire Department will strive to continue this service to the best of our ability and be deserving of this recognition.

Once again, from the staffand volunteers at Black Mountain Fire Department thanks so much for a great meal and the pat on the back. We appreciate it!

Dear Rick Rice:

Thank you for your participation in Bele Chere's 25th Silver Celebration Belly Flop Competition. Thank you for your readiness to participate, as well as your willingness to be creative, imaginative, and inventive. Your effort to obtain pledges is also greatly appreciated as it helped this event not only be entertaining, but also benefited non-profit organizations. Once again, thank you for your participation, and your continual support of Asheville Parks and Recreation and the Bele Chere Festival.

Rick,

Thanks again to you and Josh Michaels for helping make our 2'~ WNC Fire Truck Pull for Special Olympia a success. We raised almost $3000.00 through that event.

We appreciate all you and your station did for us and hope we can count on your station again next year, when we hope it will be bigger and better.

As you know we only do this for the kids and for no other reason, that is why we enjoy it so much.

Thanks again.

Dear Brenda:

Thank you so much for the e~ctensive media coverage that we received for Razzle Dazzle, Children's Arts Festival . Your listeners are still coming up to us inquiring about the event. Ofcourse we always ask how they heard about the event and 8 times out of 10, they heard it on MIX or WQtiS.

We feel that the success of Razzle Dazzle 1999 was due mainly to the promotional spots that you ran on all three of your stations - MIX, WQNS, and WHCC. We had a significant increase in attendance over Last y°ear and now that the event has had this exposure, we feel that it will only increase even more for Razzle Dazzle 2000 !!

The donation of the basketball goal acid mountain bike were great additions to the event and a wonderful e~cample on how you were willing to go the e.~ira mile for your local non-profits. I was most imgtessed with the turnout you had with the coloring contest and goal giveaway. Those activities really appealed to our middle-aged kids and you know those huge prizes made their day!

And I can't say enough about your staff; everyone was so great and professional. During the event, you were one ofthe things that I. didn't even have to worry about because you seemed to be pros at live 'remotes! The on-air spots sounded wondea-ful lane by your DJs and many thanks to the guy who helped us change out our Pepsi fountain! All ofyou were such ajoy to work with.

Again, thank you so much for your support of Razzle Dazzle . I am looking forward to working with you on future Haywood County Arts Council events. Keep up the good work!

Hi Hal: belatedly let me express my appreciation not only for the opportunity to appear twice , on the show with Ken, but for the extremely valuable community service you provide in letting such a fi~nnn exist. Because ofthe I~g-time oppressi~ ofnews and opinion here, your station is a welcmne relief. I have dubbed 8.80 Radio Free Asheville and I personally-having been at my task for too many years without help or recognition-realize what a great effect it has on the community. It goes without saying that Ken and Will are thejewels in the crown. I had not been familiar with talk radio here, but had heard various opinions over the years concerning these two guys, and what rang through in most conversations was their guiding intellig~ce in what must be, at times, not only personal satisfaction but a sense ofexasperation. I have been injournalism and teaching here for 40 .years. The breeze from your own guidance is refreshing. In the brief chat we had a week or so ago, you mentioned something about me belonging somewhere in radio. Therefore let me suggest that in my experience I have covered many stories which have spun down, over the years, to interesting denouements . Perhaps I can help Ken develop scone followups. One comes readily to mind. Over 25 years ago a local con-artist (who has no qualms about calling himselfthat) took an old Spanish land-grant document and with it began selling The Great Smolry Mountains National Park. Manyprominent local people bought some ofthe land. One businessman in Tennessee bought the Nantahala Gcege, believe it or not. There was a big Federal Court trial here and this man walked free after all the evidence was presented. (One lawyer had to do time for certif- ying the titles.) The man is a Eruct ofmine, and recently a movieproducer was here talking to him about a possible movie. There are many such stories in recent history. Would you be interested in talking about some ofthis? By the way, Patrick Killough who writes a column for me, suggested that the three ofus~you, he and me-get together for lunch. Haw does that sound? Anyway, I again offer my appreciation for what you are doing: Sincgtrely,

Dear Diane:

This letter is to again thank you for your wonderful sponsorship ofthe Red Cross Holiday Luminary Project last year. Clear Channels' broadcasting from a remote site and coverage helped our sales efforts greatly:-As our project sponsors, this letter is to give you an update on this project.

On the afternoon of October 25~', 2002 we received notification from the American Red Cross Headquarters Risk Management department that our Luminary Project's use of candles as a lighting source was a safety hazard and that they could not sanction the fundraiser using candles. This notification came just one day before Make A Difference Day, Saturday, October 26~', a day on which we had planned and recruited over 200 volunteers (youth, senior citizens, girl scout troops, other volunteers and Board members) to assemble the luminary kits for sale. We also had 265 youth scheduled for that Sunday as well . All supplies had either been donated or purchased, posters and flyers printed, and of course, you, the underwriters ofwhat was to become an annual fundraiser for the chapter, were invested. We made a decision to put the kit assembly on hold and we utilized the volunteers that Saturday to instead stuffenvelopes for our Holiday mail campaign while we awaited our appeal to National Headquarters. The Board's Executive Committee was committed to go ahead with the project using candles, unless National forbade it. While we understood National's concern for safety and the Red Cross preaches fire safety, we felt that our enclosed brochure in each kit was a wonderful tool to instruct the purchasers about all forms of holiday safety: Christmas tree lights, fireplaces, candles, etc. While we waited for over a week, in negotiations with National over this issue, our staff diligently and tenaciously explored other sources of light for the luminaries, just in case. Ten days after October 25`t', National forbade us to use candles. By this time we had discovered a safe way to illuminate . . . glow sticks. In the process we received many samples from various suppliers, seeking and testing each sample for a realistic candle glow and a guarantee that each would glow for over 8 hours, once activated -both needs a requirement.

Please remember to include Un1Ced Way the American Red Cross, of AsheviNe and Buncombe County Asheville in your will.

Proudly serving Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Jackson, Macon, Madison, Mitchell, Swain, Yancey Counties and the Qualla Boundary

" We worked out a deal with a glow stick manufacturer for 36,000 glow sticks, unfortunately at a much-increased cost over votive candles and had them rushed to tine Chapter. We able to return the votive candles to our supplier at no re-stocking cost. ~Ve then re-produced the instructional flyer and had the glowsticks in our hands, over two and a halfweeks after our planned production schedule. " We proceeded to again organize volunteers, utilizing many civic groups such as sororities, the mentally and physically handicapped from Liberty Corners, etc. to assemble one half ofthe kits (3000) we had originally planned to market. It took sevoral weeks, as you can imagine, accomplishing the work ofwhat over 350 volunteers could have accomplished on Make a Difference Day weekend. The 3000 kits were assembled by December l ~. " We felt secure that we had a marketable product and a safe product. We fnally set out to sell the kits. " Due to the unforeseen delays explained above, only 650 kits were sold. " What we did not know and were not told is that glowsticks are affected by temperaturre: they glow longer but less bright when activated in cold weather. Christmas Eve's temperature was around 20 degrees. We were not marketing a good product.

The Asheville-Mountain Area Chapter's Financial Development Committee recommendrrd to the Board ofDirectors at its March 2003 Board Meeting to discontinue the Luminary project, due to the challenges met, with the understanding that this committee would look for other uses ofthe materials in hand. We plan to take lemons, as the saying goes, and make lemonade.

One plan is to sell glowsticks at our Fourth of July Pepsi and Lemonade booth downtown. We are also excited about plans to sponsor a Kids' Night in the fall and to distribute the remainder ofthe glow sticks at that time for safety on Halloween. Our loss was about $3400 on this Luminary project . We do not expect to re-coop this loss but to approach the experience positively. Without your financial support, our loss would have been so much' greater.

Our Public Relations and Financial Development committees are working together on wonderful plans to create a costumed squirrel mascot for the Chapter and we will be seeking sponsors for that mascot and for Kids' Night in the next few months.

Again, thank you so very much for your support and understanding of our Board's decision.

Dear Caroline, John, and Rick,

What a huge undertaking this year's BookJam was! And what a terrific, motivated, and .talented volunteer force rose to the occasion! It was great to see that the effort was rewarded with a healthy tum-out and lots of praise from the community and other attendees. As intended, the event increased the visibility ofthe Swannanoa Library and literacy issues more than it had in years past. The occasion was also a financial success, generating funds to help provide additional programming and improvements at and around the library. This year's event was more ambitious than those in the past, and a lot of the credit goes to WWhTC's publicity and sponsorship coordination!

Special thanks to you, Caroline, for going to bat for this event by securing Ingle's Video as the sponsor fbr the live remote. I realize that this was not a trivial thing to pull off, and the Friends are very grateful for this commitment. Having the live remote going on during the event, plus all the pre-event publicity certainly contribt.tted to the high attendance, despite the questionable weather. WWNC's true commitment to community events such as BookJam explains the stations longevity in WNC.

John, like I told you the day of the event ;you are good at what you~do"! I've never worked closely v~th'',as talented a radio personality before, and was genuinely impressed. Your level ofprofessionalism prior to the event and throughout the event was confidence instilling . The impromptu live interviews during the event with Quality Forward's Susan Roderick, ABLS's Ed Sheary, and myself went off as if you had planned t~lem for weeks: Nice job. . . .I hope I have the opportunity to work with you again soon!

Rick, man, your commitment to this Swannanoa Valley community-building event goes back two or three years now. Over these years you've contributed your time and talents as a musician, emcee, planner, anf always hooked us up with terrific advertising and "personality" resources via WWNC. You are truly an asset to this event and to our community. . . .thank you.

The auction will be held on Wednesday, May 22nd at the Great Smokies .Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort.

All proceeds are used to assist individuals and their families in western North Carolina with out-of-pocket health care expenses due to a chronic illness or disability.

Dear Ms. Augram:

Your news staff is to be commended on the excellentjob they did while informing the public regarding snow days for our schools. As you may be aware, we are trying a new system this year by dismissing schools by district rather than the total system.

It is absolutely imperative that our audience gets very clear and concise information-your news staff was superb in communicating the information. I know that with a job like yours and mine, we, typically, only hear complaints rather than commendations. I thought it was very important that you be aware of what a fine group of professionals you have, and we are very appreciative of their efforts.

Sincerely,

C. B. Dodson Superintendent

CBD:cIj Ashely,

It always seems like each presentation you make for our students is better than the one before, and this one has the extra punch of being totally new. The students loved their trip to the station, and I had a great time also. It was wonderful to see you again ; and to experience the energy of the crew over there. The commercial came out great. Thanks so much for that opportunity. The students have an excellent item for their portfolio thanks to you and your team. Take care! Thanks so much again . Don-

Dear Diane:

I would like to take one more opportunity to thank you for your generous sponsorship of the Thirteenth Annual Eblen Foundation Children's Classic. We certainly appreciate you joining us at the Cliff's Valley this year for what we believe was the best tournament we have had to date. Thanks to you we have raised nearly $80,000 thisyear.

As you know, The Children's Classic is the major fund raiser ofthe year for the Eblen Foundation. Much of the assistance the we provide to the thousands of families in our community each year comes from the money we raise at the tournament. Your generous support ofthis event and the 31 programs of the Eblen Charities helps provide medication, emergency assistance, travel to hospitals and other necessities that children, adults and their families , many times can not receive from other organizations.

Once again, please accept our gratitude for time and generosity, on behalf of the Eblen Charities and those we have the pleasure to serve. z

Dear Ms. Augram:

The Asheville-Mountain Area Chapter will hold its 23rd Annual Auction on Saturday, June 14, 2003.

The events that have happened this past year with the slow economy and the uncertain future with our military situation have impacted all ofour lives. Here at our local chapter it has really affected us financially.

We are asking for your support of our local chapter as we will receive less than 37% of our budget from United Way this year. We need funds to continue to provide all our needed services such as First Aid/CPR training; assistance to victims of disaster; and helping military personnel keep in touch with their families.

Our Auction is our largest special event. We are asking your assistance by donating a gift certificate or items to our auction. By supporting this event you will help us raise needed funds and individuals who come to the auction will have a great time. We hope`you will be ably to help with this great event.

If you can make a donation to the Asheville-Mountain Area Chapter, please contact me at 258-3888, extension 203.

pear Mr. Pfaznica,

The excellent community service reputation of WTVD is well deserved and once again proven I by WTVD's Christmas food drive in the State of~lorth Carolina. We in the Fayetteville area wish to specifically express our deepest appreciation. Through WTVD efforts, ~sre received a humbling food donation ofover 19,000 pounds offood. This donation is an example of peoplel,''s goodness that is'tliere but needs the right media and~effort to liringwit out. Arainbow is always', available on a sunny day, but it is not until someone makes ari~effort to spray water into the sunj that it can be seen on command. 'WTVD was the catalysis to bring out the goodness that alread~ exist in our Fayetteville community and your efforts truly made a difference .for Fayetteville Urban Ministry and the people we serve. 'With the food donations and. through the efforts of 104 volunteers working 273 hours, we were able to make 875 plus food bags for those who are in most need in our community,

It is unfortunate that we have such a large number ofpeople who are in need ofhelp in our 1oea~1 conununaty, but it is an unfortunate matter made more bearable by helping hands Iike WTVD who take an interest in the welfare ofthe communities they serve and to give back a portion of'~ the revenue it earns by our patronage, Ifrnore for-profit organizations like WTVD would give j back to their clientele this would be a more joyful and blessed world throughout the year.

~Vfe sincerely thank you for your leadership role in filling our community need, especially during these financially trying times.

Monica Barnes birector of Community Affairs WTVD/ABC 11 411 Liberty Street Durham, NC 27701

Dear Monica:

On behalf of the American Red Cross, I thank you and the wonderful staff at ABC 11 for your outstanding sponsorship of the Carolina Hurricanes/ABC 11 Blood drive on August 28~h. As a result of your station's efforts, 116 donors responded to the call for donors and carne to give blood, enabling the Red Cross to collect 10D pints of blood .

When you consider that each of those 100 units can be separated and given to as many as three patients, 300 lives can be saved as a result of your blood drive. Since Labor pay historically marks an increase in blood usage, ABC 11 truly helped make a difference by ensuring that blood will be available when it is needed mast.

I would also like to take this opportunity #o point out the fact that this drive brought in 13 first-time blood donors. This is significant to note since it shows that you're blood drive is helping to broaden our donor base by bringing in those who have nEVer donated before.

Chris Ramsey did a great job with the public service announcement for the drive_ I think including Kristihe in the message really helped the community put a face with the need for blood. Your frequent airings of the PSA and regular mentions of the drive in the newscasts helped to spotlight the need for blood and encourage new and lapsed donors to give blood .

Our sincere appreciation also goes to Ed Crump and Scott Light for their wonderful work during live reports from the blood drive . We know there were so many of the staff at ABC 11 whc worked on the blood drive and we ask you to let them know what a difference their contributions made.

We salute ABC 11 for helping to save so many lives in our community . We were excited to learn from Sheila that you are interested in sponsoring our December drive as well. t Took forward to working with you again on that upcoming project.

Memo to FCC Localism Task. Force

From Frank '`Moe" Bell CEU, Rock Hill Area YMCA

Date October 17, 2003

Rock l,-lilt Area YMCA members and residents ofYork and Lancaster Counties are fortunate to have WRHI-AM and WRHM-FM as local radio stations for our community. Uur local stations have been an active partner with many local events such as our Come See Me Festival, Summerfest and the Jubilee Arts Festival. The YMCA has partnered with WRHI-AEI the past 25 years to offer South Carolina's largest Easter egg hunt - the Eater Egg Safari. More than 5,000 kids participate in the hunt each year at no cost to participants! local radio stations broadcast local high school football -- they carry different games each Friday night in the Fa11 for all high school teams in York and Lancaster Counties.

The principles ofOur Three Sons Broadcasting (owners of the local radio stations} serve on many community committees. Maru~ing Kimmel is a member ofour Rock Hill Area Ylv1CA Raard ofDirectors and is chair of our $ 7.2 million "Vision for Growth" Capital Campaign. Alan Miller is past chair ofour Come See Me Festival which is one of the Suuth's largest volunteer festivals.

They also do a splendid job of covering local news stories. In addition to news relating to the YMCA, they attend Kiwanis Club meetings, school board meetings, and other events to gather stories of local interest. They are the ONLY provider of"timely" local emergency news such as school closings due to winter storms. When Hurricane Hugo devastated our community in the early 90s, residents lost power for more than a week - Iocal radio let listeners know that the YMCA was offering free hot showers.

to summary, WRHI-AM and WRHM-FM are an integral part of our community. We need their local touch. They are essential for providing timely, accurate local news stories. In addition, they improve the quality of life for hock Hill and its citizens!
