BRIEFLY Early Christmas for car winners ‘Blarey’ Xmas, noisy New Year The Christmas/New Year period saw 65 complaints fi led in regards to stereo, bass and party noise reports Waipa Dis- trict Council. This was an increase of 14 complaints, up from 51 com- plaints in 06/07. As a result at least two prop- erties are likely to be facing further action, but most com- plaints were resolved without any problems. The workload for Coun- cil’s noise control offi cers was evenly split between Te Awamutu and Cambridge. The Christmas/New Year period covers December 21- January 3. Dry end to ‘07 Weather-wise at least there was a dry fi nish to 2007, reports Te Awamutu weather watcher Paul Hobbs. December saw 80.5mm of rain in the area, only about three quarters of the average December rainfall, but still much higher than November’s meagre 49mm. The dry fi nish contributed to the fourth driest annual total of 1213mm, in the 18 years that Mr Hobbs has been keeping records. PETER BRYANT of Parawera was snapping photos last week when he spotted the white car above decide to overtake the silver car in front of it, despite the fact that the front vehicle was about to overtake a roadside mowing contractor and despite the close proximity of the blind corner ahead (intersection of Arapuni Road and Mellsop Road). The driver of the white vehicle continued blithely on his way and came perilously close to another vehicle heading in the other direction. It’s little wonder our road toll is proving so diffi cult to get down when some motorists seem oblivious to the fact they are sharing the road with other vehicles ... and their human occupants. Reading Road Code New Year’s resolution for all drivers: AA “The deaths of 17 people on New Zealand’s roads this holiday period are disappointing, tragic and needless,” says AA spokesperson Si- mon Lambourne. “Equally saddening is the increase in the an- nual road toll, and the AA urges motorists to take extra care if they are heading home from holidays this weekend.” Tragically 17 people died on New Zealand’s roads during the holiday period which started at 4pm on Christmas Eve and concluded at 6am Toyota Surfs Toyota Prados today, signifi cantly up on the nine last year. We should be equally concerned about, and must not forget, the thousands of motorists injured in crashes during 2007 and during the Christmas New Year holiday period, some of whom will have lifelong injuries. “We need to focus on having a safer system - safer drivers in safer cars on safer roads. That requires more emphasis on education, greater enforcement and improved road safety engineer- ing. “The AA is encouraged by the new Land Trans- port New Zealand driver fatigue campaign which helps motorists recognise the signs of fatigue and the consequences of drowsy driving. 2002 BMW 2000 Subaru “Drivers do need to take more care and follow Really nice in black, 2002 BMW Mini Lancastor the road code rules. WEBSITE: Maui’s dolphins are considered the world’s rar- est marine dolphins and are found only around the www.inghamrentals.co.nz west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. It is estimated there are only 110 left and of these the population may include only 60 mature or call us on FREEPHONE: animals and only 25 breeding females. Research in 2005 showed the highest densities 0800 RENTUS or 07 871 5630 are between Manukau Harbour and Port Waikato. Environment Waikato’s grant will help to fund research into whether or not the dolphins visit these areas. Acoustic pods will be placed around the har- bours to record dolphin activity by researchers based at Otago University in conjunction with the Department of Conservation (DOC). The research will be peer reviewed to ensure that it accurately tests for the presence or absence of dolphins. Information gathered during this research will help DOC and the Ministry of Fisheries develop appropriate management options for the dolphin. It will also be useful in future when Environ- ment Waikato makes resource management deci- sions for these areas. Environment Waikato is responsible for protect- ing biodiversity in the Waikato region. Cr Paula Southgate said that a Maui’s dolphin had recently been found dead along the Raglan coast, highlighting the species’ precarious posi- tion. She said she was committed to supporting envi- ronmental initiatives and believed the organisa- tion had to take responsibility for the kind of com- munity projects supported by the Environmental Initiatives Fund. “A nearly extinct dolphin is about as serious as 009TC030-08 it gets,” she said.
