Fall is a special time at UWindsor. A renewed sense of optimism pervades the campus as students, faculty and staff embark on another year of making a difference in people’s lives through teaching, research, creative art, and innovation. You’ll find that spirit alive and well in the pages of this edition of VIEW. Our cover story focuses on EPICentre—the campus’ new home of entrepreneurship and innovation. From in-class education to extra- curricular events and activities, this initiative provides students and recent graduates with the opportunity and resources to successfully start and grow a business. This edition also highlights the groundbreaking research of Psychology and Women’s Studies professor, Dr. Charlene Senn, who developed a sexual assault resistance education program that shows lasting, positive outcomes. This exciting announcement sparked media coverage across the globe. Dr. Alan Wildeman As is our tradition, Fall VIEW introduces our readers to one of our Annual Giving Program (AGP) callers. Lancer pole-vaulter Milos Savic is a stellar athlete and advocate for the AGP, which funds scholarships and such other campus initiatives as research equipment, library books and enhanced classrooms. In other campus news, UWindsor ranked among five Canadian universities noted as the greenest in North America by the Princeton Review’s Guide to 353 Green Colleges. Case in point: UWindsor MBA students built a greenhouse made almost entirely of nearly 2,000 recyclable plastic water bottles this past summer. And don’t miss the inspiring story of Veronika Mogyorody, associate professor in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, named among five outstanding post-secondary educators to receive the 2015 Brightspace Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning. I want to thank all of our alumni and friends for their support, and our faculty and staff for the energy and creativity they bring to making UWindsor a place where students can have an experience that will last them a lifetime.

Lancer athlete Milos Savic isn’t afraid of a challenge. The 2015 Canadian university bronze medalist in pole vault proves that each time he hurtles himself metres into the air with the goal of leaving a bar delicately balanced far above the ground on its stand, unscathed. He accomplishes this by virtue of strength, determination—and the slender pole he uses to spring upward. For many UWindsor students, a scholarship or bursary performs the same function as that pole: they have the intelligence, work ethic and will to succeed, but need a financial boost to help them achieve their academic goals. The University of Windsor Annual Giving Program (AGP) is an important part of funding such scholarships, as well as other campus initiatives such as research equipment, library books or enhanced classrooms. The Annual Alumni and Friends Phonathon is an important part of the campaign’s success. “Our annual phonathon program provides an opportunity for a unique connection to be made—current students calling our past students in support of future students,” says Mona Dosen, who co-ordinates the program. “I hope that when your phone rings this fall and it’s a University of Windsor student on the other end, you welcome the call and take the opportunity to rekindle your connection with your alma mater. I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed with the conversation you have.” Savic has been a caller since 2011. He says he enjoys his role with the program. “This program not only allows me to help out the very institution that supports me, but I also get the chance to talk to Lancer track and field and Lancer Milos Savic appreciates the value of donor support.

UNIVERSITY OF WINDSOR ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT UNIVERSITY OF WINDSOR ALUMNI ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE

PRESIDENT The start of September brings with it the energy of a new John Renaud BComm ’01 beginning. Although we enjoy the long, warm days of summer, PAST PRESIDENT there is something refreshing about getting back into a routine Michael Bates BHK ’95, MBA ‘04 in the fall. It is reminiscent of the days when we were UWindsor VICE PRESIDENT students preparing for the academic year—buying text books, Jean Wright BA ’71, BEd ‘72 meeting profs, and feeling those butterflies in our stomachs as TREASURER we searched for our classrooms and hoped to make new friends. Anna Godo BASc ’86, MASc ‘90 Those friends we made and the experiences we shared in DIRECTORS the halls of the University of Windsor still positively impact Ken Alexander BPA ’87, LLB ‘92 our lives as alumni. These relationships are fostered and Chris Busch MSc ’03, MBA ‘07 encouraged by the Alumni Association by providing opportunities to connect at exclusive P.J. Dupuis BComm ‘05 Clara Howitt BA ’90, MEd ’98, PhD ‘09 events, regular communication and invitations to join us back on campus for special Shae Kavanaugh BA ’10, JD ‘13 occasions. This year, we are proud to welcome alumni and friends back to campus for Mark Lefebvre BFA ‘88 Alumni Weekend scheduled for October 1 to 4. Tamara Lopez BA ’04 Melissa Lyons MBA ‘92 Be sure to check out the full line-up of events for Alumni Weekend (on page 28) Beth Oakley BA ’90, BEd ’98, MEd ‘05 and mark these dates in your calendar. There will be something for everyone, including Celso Oliveira BHK ’08, MBA ‘14 UWindsor Spirit Day, a cocktail reception at the new Welcome Centre building, the Gordon Orr BA ‘89 Beth Ann Prince BA ‘91 Human Kinetics (HK) 50th Reunion activities, our Alumni Tailgate BBQ and the annual Jake Rondot BHK ‘02 Alumni Sports Hall of Fame awards ceremony. Jennifer Simpson Rooke BA ’02, LLB ‘05 Our alumni office also spent the summer in its new home—the Welcome Centre. EX-OFFICIO MEMBERS This beautiful, new building at the corner of Sunset and Wyandotte is an exciting new Dr. Alan Wildeman space where we can welcome alumni, students, donors, volunteers and friends. President, University of Windsor We are also excited about the opening of the new downtown campus and the Brian Brown BFA ‘74 progression of the university’s campus transformation plan. This plan, combined with Faculty Association the incredible academic research being conducted, the forging of vibrant community Iftekhar Ibne Basith MASc ‘11 partnerships and providing students with an education that goes beyond the traditional President, GSS classroom, are just some of the reasons why we are so proud to be members of the Dr. Ed King MA ’61, BEd ’76, MA ’91, MA ‘01 UWindsor family. President, OPUS Whether you are a new student on campus or a graduate from years past, the Alumni Dr. Gordon Drake Association wants to be sure you feel connected to your alma mater. Update your contact President, Canterbury College information (www.uwindsor.ca/alumni) so you don’t miss out on any upcoming events BOARD OF GOVERNORS REPRESENTATIVES or news. Scholarship support at all levels provides essential aid to UWindsor students. A gift of any size can make a significant impact on a student’s education.
