Jim It goes without saying that one of John Williams’ most epic and influential film scores of all time is his score for the first “Superman” film. To this day it remains as iconic as the film itself. From the Ruby- Spears animated series to “Seinfeld” to “Smallville” and its reappearance in “Superman Returns”, its status in popular culture continues to resonate. Danny Elfman has also said that it will appear in the forthcoming “Justice League” film. When word was released in September 2017 that Warner Home Video announced plans to release a new two-disc Blu-ray of “Superman” as part of the Warner Archive Collection, fans around the world rejoiced with excitement at the news that the 188-minute extended version of the film - a slightly shorter version of which was first broadcast on ABC-TV on February 7 & 8, 1982 - would be part of the release. -

A trend in recent years is for social studies teachers to use these graphics to enhance instruction. Cartoons have the ability to:(1) empower teachers to demonstrate excellence during lessons; (2) prepare students for standardized tests containing cartoon questions;(3) promote critical thinking as in the Bradley Commission's suggestions for developing "History's Habits of the Mind;"(4) develop students' multiple intelligences, especially those of special needs learners; and (5) build lessons that aid students to master standards of governmental or professional curriculum organizations. The article traces the historical development of the political cartoon and provides examples of some of the earliest ones; the contemporary scene is also represented. Suggestions are given for use of research and critical thinking skills in interpreting editorial cartoons. The caricature and symbolism of political cartoons also are explored. An extensive reference section provides additional information and sources for political cartoons. -

IT was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed. With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world, the blood pounded in his head, and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning to bring down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history. With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his stolid head, and his eyes all orange flame with the thought of what came next, he flicked the igniter and the house jumped up in a gorging fire that burned the evening sky red and yellow and black. He strode in a swarm of fireflies. He wanted above all, like the old joke, to shove a marshmallow on a stick in the furnace, while the flapping pigeon- winged books died on the porch and lawn of the house. While the books went up in sparkling whirls and blew away on a wind turned dark with burning. Montag grinned the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame. He knew that when he returned to the firehouse, he might wink at himself, a minstrel man, Does% burntcorked, in the mirror. Later, going to sleep, he would feel the fiery smile still gripped by his Montag% face muscles, in the dark. -

PRESS RELEASE: June 2011 11/5 Elizabeth Taylor: Screen Goddess BFI Southbank Salutes the Hollywood Legend On 23 March 2011 Hollywood – and the world – lost a living legend when Dame Elizabeth Taylor died. As a tribute to her BFI Southbank presents a season of some of her finest films, this August, including Giant (1956), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966). Throughout her career she won two Academy Awards and was nominated for a further three, and, beauty aside, was known for her humanitarian work and fearless social activism. Elizabeth Taylor was born in Hampstead, London, on 27 February 1932 to affluent American parents, and moved to the US just months before the outbreak of WWII. Retired stage actress Sara Southern doggedly promoted her daughter’s career as a child star, culminating in the hit National Velvet (1944), when she was just 12, and was instrumental in the reluctant teenager’s successful transition to adult roles. Her first big success in an adult role came with Vincente Minnelli’s Father of the Bride (1950), before her burgeoning sexuality was recognised and she was cast as a wealthy young seductress in A Place in the Sun (1951) – her first on-screen partnership with Montgomery Clift (a friend to whom Taylor remained fiercely loyal until Clift’s death in 1966). Together they were hailed as the most beautiful movie couple in Hollywood history. The oil-epic Giant (1956) came next, followed by Raintree County (1958), which earned the actress her first Oscar nomination and saw Taylor reunited with Clift, though it was during the filming that he was in the infamous car crash that would leave him physically and mentally scarred. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY Female Subjectivity, Film Form, and Weimar Aesthetics: The Noir Films of Robert Siodmak by Kathleen Natasha Wackett A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF BA HONOURS IN FILM STUDIES DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION, MEDIA, AND FILM CALGARY, ALBERTA APRIL, 2017 © Kathleen Natasha Wackett 2017 Abstract This thesis concerns the way complex female perspectives are realized through the 1940s noir films of director Robert Siodmak, a factor that has been largely overseen in existing literature on his work. My thesis analyzes the presentation of female characters in Phantom Lady, The Spiral Staircase, and The Killers, reading them as a re-articulation of the Weimar New Woman through the vernacular of Hollywood cinema. These films provide a representation of female subjectivity that is intrinsically connected to film as a medium, as they deploy specific cinematic techniques and artistic influences to communicate a female viewpoint. I argue Siodmak’s iterations of German Expressionist aesthetics gives way to a feminized reading of this style, communicating the inner, subjective experience of a female character in a visual manner. ii Acknowledgements This project would not have been possible without my supervisor Dr. Lee Carruthers, whose boundless guidance and enthusiasm is not only the reason I love film noir but why I am in film studies in the first place.
