Interpretive Guide

Nature and Scope Wanuskewin Heritage Park (WHP), located just north of , , is a cultural center focused on the Northern Plains. Centered around the Opimihaw Creek Valley, Wanuskewin has 's longest continuously running archaeology site, with over 19 sites found in the valley dating as far back as 6,400 years ago. Wanuskewin offers a variety of educational programs about the Plains region, cultures, archaeology, history, and traditions to visitors of all ages. Wanuskewin Heritage Park is accepting applications for full time, summer Interpretive Guides reporting to the Visitor Services Manager. The position will include the following accountabilities:

-- Contributes to a welcoming environment for all Wanuskewin visitors and guests with a focus on service excellence

-- Ensures park visitors are informed and equipped with information about trail routes, programs, regulations, and issues or concerns related to a public health and safety

-- Accurately track all visitors into the park POS/database

--Recommends and actively supports the development and implementation of all programming including demonstrations, workshops, interpretation of Plains Indigenous Cultures, natural history and ecological features, exhibits, displays and artifacts

-- Determine and apply a variety of heritage presentations and interpretation techniques in the development of meaningful, captivating and enjoyable presentations, non-personal interpretive product and demonstrations

-- Participates in the delivery of programming through interpretations, storytelling, dancing, drumming and singing both on- site and off

-- Provides recommendations to enhance heritage presentations and interpretive programs

-- Adapts presentations to meet specific audience requirement

-- Ensures ongoing maintenance of the trails, visitors areas and interactive exhibits

-- Ensures excellence in the stewardship of all resources

Required Qualifications and Experience

Post-secondary education in hospitality, tourism, education, biology, archaeology, natural history, social work or Indigenous studies is preferred. Candidate must be currently enrolled in a postsecondary institution with intention of returning as a student in the autumn of 2019. Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous cultures and traditions as well as previous experience conducting presentations is required. Previous experience in public speaking, storytelling and conducting and Metis dance or singing would be considered an asset. Successful candidate(s) will be required to produce a CPIC and have reliable transportation prior to commencement of work. People with Aboriginal (First Nations, Inuit or Metis) Ancestry will be given preference (HRC-E-91-09) (HRC-E-91-17)

The ideal candidate will:

• Have experience leading/teaching large groups of youth in the outdoors.

• Must have a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and a commitment to achieving the goals and mission of Wanuskewin Heritage Park.

• Ability to communicate effectively with the public (esp. youth and adults)

• Demonstrated experience with youth behavioral management and solid outdoor interpretation skills. • Familiar with Saskatchewan Education K-12 curriculum is an asset..

• Possess excellent writing skills.

• Be able to work in adverse conditions such as heat, rain and wind performing strenuous manual labor.

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.

• Creativity and high energy are a must.

• Self-starter and self-directed with initiative.

• Proficient with Microsoft Office expected.

• Able to stand for long periods of time and walk over rough terrain.

• Able to lift 50 pounds.
