Kuppam Veterinary Hospital - Gudiyattam Veterinary Surgeon Veterinary Hospital - Kalliyur Veterinary Hospital - Ranipet Veterinary Hospital - Walaja Veterinary Hospital - Tirupathur Veterinary Hospital - Vaniyambadi ANIMAL HUSBANDRY DEPARTMENT VELLORE REGION A PERSPECTIVE OF DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES The share of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Vellore in improving the social and economic status of the farmers is always noteworthy. 163 Units in this district are provided with artificial insemination technology where exotic bull semen that is processed is used to ensure maximum production to benefit the farmers. The knowledge of A2 milk and involvement in the conservation of indigenous breeds has spiked the production of semen of these breeds for distribution to the farmers. Frozen semen at Rs.10/- is been supplied at an economical price to the farmers and this is effective to produce cross breed heifer calves which improves the economic status of the farmer. To sustain the high production of milk from the cows, the animals had to be fed with ad libedum green fodder. The farmers with agricultural land are supplied with slips of fodder by this department. Moreover certified seeds are also supplied to them. The fodder such grown should also he effectively and scientifically used at the farmers' end. So, chaff cutters are supplied by this department at a subsidized rate. Minerals play a vital role in the maintenance of animal health and production. So this department also supplies mineral mixture to the farmers. All the veterinary institutions are supplied with vaccines so as to achieve minimum mortality in this district. Medical and surgical cases are also performed in the institution. A population of 5,50,000 animals are protected against this deadly disease which affects the production and health of animals. In Vellore District FMD-CP 14th Round Vaccination Programme inagurated by Respected District Collector Thiru. S.A. Raman, I.A.S. at Periya Pudhur Village, Katpadi Taluk in Vellore District on 01.03.2018. National Insurance Scheme: (NIS) The unprecedented death of animals is a economial loss to the farmer. To overcome such losses, milch animals are insured by this department wherein only 25% of the premium is paid by the beneficiary whereas 75% is borne by the government 5500 animals were insured last year. Kalnadai Padhukappu Thittam: (KPT) In this scheme, far off villages that don't have easy access to veterinary institutions have been selected. Camps will be conducted in these villages. Routines of the activities performed in the veterinary institutions are performed in this village. In total, 284 such camps are being conducted year wise. Deworming, setting of repeat breeders, insemination, treatment of sick animals vaccination and minor surgeries are being performed. In a nut shell, one day veterinary institutions at village level. Assistance the States for Control of Animal Disease: (ASCAD) This scheme enables identifying endemic areas of diseases and as a reulst animals are vaccinated in advance. The prevent any untoward incidents, Anthrax, Pasteurella, Black quarter, Foot and mouth and PPR disease are covered. National Animal Disease Reporting System: (NADRS) Every block is having a node and through which any affections happening in the block had to be reported. There are 20 nodes in this district and one monitoring node at Vellore Outbreaks are also recorded through these nodes. Scheme for Poultry Development: (SPD) 930 desi poultry farms were raised in by farmers in this scheme enrolling a subsidiairy income to the farmers. This scheme was established since 2012-13 the state government issues a subsidy of 25% in this scheme.. Broiler Poultry Developement: (BROILER) There is only a minor difference between the two schemes where broiler birds are breed by the farmers. Established since 2013-14, there are 40 beneficiaries who enjoy the same subsidy as mentioned above. Rural Backyard Poultry Scheme: (RBPS) This scheme is unique in its application since all the birds distributed to the farmers i.e. 20 hen and a pen are raised in their backyard. Moreover this is a 100% subsidized scheme wherein 1760 farmers are benefitted since 2014-15. Mission on Sustainable Dry land Agriculture: (MSDA) Deployed in 10 blocks of this district. This scheme identifies farmers from a selected area and whose cattle are shielded for general health, udder health and uterine health. State Fodder Development Scheme: (SFDS) 1 When milch animals are being raised, green fodder will be a liability. To fortify the production fodder slips, leguminous and fodder seeds are supplied to be sown as rainfed crops. 2 Sprinklers at 75% subsidized are also provided to farmers. 3 Chaf cutters are also provided which warrants the effective utilisation of green fodder resulting in reduced wastage. Scientifically the length of the fodder cut is proportional to the fat % of milk and so chaff cutters also enables quality milk and these are also available to the farmers with 75% subsidy. 4 Supplying green fodder throughout the year is a Herculean task per the farmers but production of azolla in their backyard is possibly the best alternative of green fodder and also is fortified with essential nutrients. Now this azolla and its growth and effectiveness is demonstrated to the farmers and interested individuals are benefitted with the accessories of azollas growth. 5 Urbanization had left little land for agriculture. But hydroponics provides greens to the farmers where no land is required to raise fodder. Farmers are trained and supplied with components free of cost. Moreover vermicompost and raising of sesbania grandiflora on the lands are also supplied to the farmers with training. Dry Fodder: Dry fodder depots were established in many veterinary dispensaries and paddy straw was provided to the farmers at a subsidized rate during the peak of summer. Mini Dairy Units: 4 mini dairy units are to be installed in the district with the beneficiaries to be approved by the District Collector and are tagged with a 25% subsidy. Training for Artificial Insemination to Unemployment Youth: Training for artificial insemination to unemployment youth is given where the individual is trained for three months to provide assistance to farmers at their door steps. Erudhu Vidum Vizha-2018 (Vellore District) As on date, after proper Government Orders and the permission of the District Collector, bull races are being conducted in the district under the street supervision of the Veterinary Assistant Surgeon and officers of this department. These were137 events being conducted as on 31.05.2018. Rehabilitation of Illicit Brewers with Milch Animals : Rehabilitation of illicit brewers with milch animals where staff of Prohibition enforcement wing are assisted by Veterinary Assistant Surgeon to purchase milch animals for their beneficiaries. Milch Cows for Tribal People Welfare: Tribal Welfare Department are also helped by the Veterinary Assistant Surgeon to purchase milch animals.
