On Sept. 6, 2002, the Michigan State fi eld hockey team opened a new chapter in the history books with the unveiling of the new MSU Field Hockey Complex.

Located in the heart of campus adjacent to Spartan Stadium, the facility features seating for more than 1,200 spectators. A press box features media seating, a state-of-the-art sound system and a camera platform on the roof. Eight light towers allow the Spartans to host night games. The playing surface is AstroTurf 12, a water-based turf that is ideal for fi eld hockey.

Van de Kerkhof on the 2007 Season:

What would you like to achieve as a head coach? “I look forward to challenging myself, my coaching staff and my players to be the best we can be every day. I want to prepare the team to perform at a level that allows us to compete for the Championship and earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

“I would like for people to talk positively about our program and us as people, not because they see us at the moment, but know about us from the past. I want them to be impressed and amazed about what, and how, we do things on and off the fi eld. I will continue what we have been doing to be successful and believe that our Spartan fi eld hockey program will continue to expand our group of fans and friends.

“Outside of competing for Spartan pride, I am looking forward to assisting my student- athletes in having a great and successful college experience at Michigan State University. I want to help them excel in the classroom, on the fi eld and in dealing with life challenges. I hope that once they graduate from MSU they will continue to be part of our Spartan family for many years to come. Although talented players come and go, the Spartan tradition will always be there to be a part of and to enjoy!”

What are your team goals for the season? “This past spring, the players group and coaching staff set goals for the upcoming season. The team wants to be a contender for the Big Ten Championship and return to the NCAA Tournament.

“The fi rst step they took during the summer involved a lot of training and preparation in cardio, fi tness and most importantly fi eld hockey. I have been very impressed and pleased with their commitment and time spent on the playing fi eld. I believe that the players group and coaching staff are prepared, very excited, and motivated to get the season started.”

How do you achieve success with such a young team at this level? “The players are very eager and excited to learn more about fi eld hockey and being coached the Spartan way. Although we are welcoming 10 new faces to the team, we can count on the experience of many returning players that have been part of Spartan fi eld hockey success and championship seasons in recent years. Most of our freshmen have played at very competitive high school and club programs, so they are familiar with what it takes to play well and develop as players and as a team.”

ADVANCING KNOWLEDGE. TRANSFORMING LIVES.

Michigan State University is defi ning what it means to be a land-grant university in the 21st century. From our roots as the nation’s pioneer land-grant institution, we have a long tradition of using the research and knowledge that is developed here to create practical solutions that make a difference for individuals and communities. From Michigan to Malawi, MSU continues its proud tradition of advancing knowledge and transforming lives. A few highlights of our accomplishments are listed here. For more information, please visit www.msu.edu. A LEADING INTERNATIONAL PARTNER

One of the three largest undergraduate study abroad programs in the nation, with 2,787 students studying abroad in 2005-06; 220 programs in more than 65 countries on all continents. MSU was the largest recipient of USAID funding for international projects in the last half of the 21st century. MSU’s African Studies Center has been nationally ranked as one of the leading and most comprehensive centers of its kind in the United States. MSU aided in the reconstruction of the Rwandan economy by sending experts to educate farmers on how to set up – and sustain – cooperatives that grow premium coffee, now a market staple in Rwanda.

RESEARCH THAT IMPROVES LIVES

MSU was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to take part in a new $125 million bioenergy initiative. MSU will partner with the University of Wisconsin-Madison in establishing the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, one of three in the nation, which will use basic science research aimed at solving some of the most complex problems in converting natural materials to energy. MSU’s breakthrough discoveries include Cisplatin and Carboplatin, two of the world’s leading anti-cancer drugs. MSU has one of the top nutritional immunology programs in the country, a cutting-edge discipline studying how the food eaten affects a person’s immune system. MSU is one of only four universities across the country asked by the Carnegie Annenberg, Rockefeller and Ford foundations to take part in the “Teachers for a New Era” initiative to develop state-of-the-art programs in K-12 teacher education. MSU’s Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health is one of the country’s premier veterinary diagnostic laboratories, conducting more than 1.2 million diagnostic tests per year. CLARA BELL SMITH ACADEMIC CENTER

Academic, personal, and professional support is essential to college success. At MSU, Student-Athlete Support Services helps student-athletes reach their full potential. Our philosophy is to offer an academic support program that will assist all student-athletes with the transition to college and integrate with the total university. This all-encompassing support continues throughout the student- athlete’s collegiate career, until the day he or she receives a diploma, lands a job, or enters graduate school. MICHIGAN STATE RANKS THIRD IN THE BIG TEN AND 14TH NATIONALLY WITH 94 ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS. LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM The mission of the Life Skills Program is to provide a systematic personal development program designed to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individ- ual needs. The focus of the program is on the individual as a whole person — academically, athletically and emo- tionally — and on the changing needs of that individual during college and in the years after graduation. MSU implements and expands on the vision of the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program by using university and commu- nity resources to provide student-athletes with the best pos- sible resources.

A Storied Past ... Donate To The Future Join the winning team ... and together we can make a difference!

It’s a great time to be part of Michigan State fi eld hockey. The team has won several Big Ten Championships, advanced to the NCAA Final Four (2002 and 2004) and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight (2001, 2003) over the course of the past six seasons. In addition, Spartan fi eld hockey players have excelled in the classroom as six players were named to the NFHCA National Academic Team in 2004. MSU is committed to being a top-10 fi eld hockey program that is well-known and respected in East Lansing and across the country. The accomplishments of the past would not have been possible without your support. For more information on how to make a difference with the MSU fi eld hockey program, please contact the Spartan fi eld hockey offi ce at 517.353.7157, or email head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof at: [email protected], or contact the Ralph Young Fund at 517.432.4610. ...
