He served as Music Director of the New York City Opera for 14 seasons and was hailed for his leadership of the orchestra. He was also Music Director of the Richmond Symphony (VA) for 12 seasons. Recipient of Columbia University’s Ditson Conductor’s Award, Mr. Manahan was also honored by the American Society of Composers and Publishers (ASCAP) for his “career-long advocacy for American composers and the music of our time.” His Carnegie Hall performance of Samuel Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra was hailed by audiences and critics alike. -

Today’s Operas BERG: WOZZECK Alban Berg: Wozzeck (1926). Opera in Three Acts. Text by the composer, based on Woyzeck by Georg Büchner (1813–37). Büchner was a brilliant but short-lived writer from the start of the 19th Century. His play, a searing attack on militarism and social injustice, was left unfinished at his death, existing only as a large number of short scenes. It was first performed only in 1913 in Munich and in Vienna the following year, a performance that Berg attended. Working on the opera during his own service in the World War, Berg must have seen uncanny relevance across the centuries. The opera premiered in Berlin in 1925 under Erich Kleiber, and was an immediate success until banned by the Nazis in 1933. [The following synopsis is adapted from Wikipedia. Sections to be played in class are underlined.] Despite its atonality, the three acts and the five scenes in each act are distinguished by reference to conventional musical structures. These are listed after each section below. Act One, Scene 1 (Suite). Wozzeck is shaving the Captain who lectures him on the qualities of a "decent man" and taunts him for living an immoral life. Wozzeck slavishly replies, "Jawohl, Herr Hauptmann" — 1 — repeatedly to the Captain's abuse. However, when the Captain scorns Wozzeck for having a child out of wedlock, Wozzeck protests that it is difficult to be virtuous when he is poor. The flustered Captain, unable to comprehend Wozzeck, finally concedes that he is a decent man, and dismisses him. Act One, Scene 2 (Rhapsody and Hunting Song). -

He mod- elled this technique on the tri-tetrachordal procedure in Schoenberg’s Prelude from the Suite for Piano, Op. 25 but, unlike his teacher, Gerhard treated the tetrachords as internally unordered pitch-class collections. This decision was possibly encouraged by his exposure from the mid- 1920s onwards to Josef Matthias Hauer’s writings on ‘trope theory’. Although rarely discussed by scholars, Andantino occupies a special place in Gerhard’s creative output for being his first attempt at ‘twelve-tone composition’ and foreshadowing the permutation techniques that would become a distinctive feature of his later serial compositions. This article analyses Andantino within the context of the early history of twelve-tone music and theory. One familiar answer suggests that it means everything. Toward the end of the millennium, as live performance became a central focus of opera studies, the idea of a definitive version of an operatic text came to seem less and less appealing, as did the very notion of an operatic “work.”1 Instead, scholars valorized the elusive, mutable, or open-ended, and opera itself was imagined as an unfinished business, its ontology anchored in the moment of performance. But if the performative turn celebrated “unfinishedness,” it also rendered the concept oddly void of meaning. Strictly speaking, the finishedness of an opera can only be measured against one version or another of the work concept. Once the composer’s intention has lost its authority and the essence of an opera is situated less in its script than in its live in- stantiation, what does it mean to speak of an unfinished opera? If the locus of opera is the performance rather than the score, can Turandot be said to be any less com- plete than Tosca just because Alfano or Berio wrote the notes for the final scene? If the work is recast as a unique event that concludes every time the curtain falls, what space is left for the inconclusive? Although these questions have a bearing on opera criticism in general, they de- rive from my engagement with one particular opera, and in this article I will reroute them back into it: Alban Berg’s Lulu, which the composer struggled with from the late 1920s until his death in 1935.2 In November of that year, Berg suffered an unfor- tunate insect bite that would lead to his death by blood poisoning on Christmas Eve. -

ANDY BIRTWISTLE Photographic Sound Art and the Silent Modernity of Walter Ruttmann’s Weekend (1930) ABSTRACT This article examines Walter Ruttmann’s Weekend, a twelve-minute programme made for German radio in 1930. Recorded and edited using Tri-Ergon optical film sound technology, it was described by Ruttmann in the following terms: ‘Weekend is a study in sound montage. I used the film strip to record the sound exclusively, yielding what amounts to a blind film’. The programme is often referenced in histories of sonic art, since Ruttmann’s ‘cinematic’ use of montage seems to have prefigured the developments that took place in musique concrète over a decade later. However, despite being a well-known piece of work, Weekend remains critically neglected: a footnote to Ruttmann’s better-known work in cinema. The article aims to revisit and reappraise Weekend as a radical modernist work by considering not only its status as a pioneering piece of sonic art, and but also its intermediality. -

9 ‘Un Català Mundial’: The early works of Roberto Gerhard Mark E. Perry ABSTRACT In the evaluation of the Catalan-born composer’s total oeuvre, the early works of Roberto Gerhard reflect the shifting cultural discourse within Catalan nationalism at the beginning of the twentieth century. As a means of fostering cultural independence from the rest of Spain, Catalan national sentiment gradually switched to the promotion of modernist ideologies, which were previously fended off in the defense and preservation of traditional culture. During this period under investigation, Gerhard was 'un català mundial' (an international Catalan), longing to participate in the greater musical world of the avant-garde. His musical activities in composition, research, and criticism echoed the shifting cultural discourse within Catalonia—Barcelona in particular. Active in nearly all aspects of musical life in the Catalan capital, Gerhard composed works that exhibited an intricate reconciliation of traditional Catalan elements with modern Central European musical aesthetics. Alongside painter Joan Miró, architect Josep Luís Sert, and arts promoter Joan Prats i Vallès, Gerhard established the Amics de l’Art Nou (ADLAN), promoting Catalan avant-garde art. Gerhard, with the assistance of cellist and conductor Pau Casals, brought Arnold Schoenberg to Catalonia for multiple performances of the Viennese master’s music. Gerhard further introduced modern music to the Catalan public with the ISCM festival held in Barcelona in 1936. This paper is informed by critical examination of period documents and contextualizes many of his early works within the escalating cultural movement that promoted modernization in the arts as a manifestation of Catalan national sentiment. -
