Dressage has helped me become more disciplined and more focused on my posture.” Bob, a retired mechanic since 2006, lives in Sycamore. A connoisseur of Natural Horse- manship, he follows the teachings of Pat and Linda Parelli, Dennis Reis, and Richard Winters, among others, with Winters being his favorite. This is a photo of Bob (left) and his younger brother Tom in their youth. Bob has been riding horses since he was 10 and also drives horses. He lived in Chicago, where his father operated a butcher shop, and grew up in Justice, IL, where his father owned a tavern and picnic grove. It was in Chicago where his of horses was ignited. There, scrap haulers used horse-drawn wagons and worked the alleys calling out for, “Rags, Iron.” One of the scrap haulers gave Bob a ride on his horse, and “I’ve been hooked ever since,” Bob says. From there, “I learned the hard way” by just starting to trail ride and working with horse owners, he recounts. He rode at barns in the area of Keen and Asher Avenues, where now there is a canopy of tollways overhead. He and his brother Tom also worked for John Matsen oper- ating pony and carriage rides. In eighth grade, in 1954-55, he drove a chariot pulled by a team of horses in Chicago to publicize a movie. In 1958, he and Tom drove a team of horses from Chicago to Rockford to publicize the opening of Tollway 90. It took them five days, 6 to 7 hours a day, to complete the journey. At the end of each day, the horses were brought to a nearby farm to be fed and rested, and Bob and his brother went home to sleep and were driven back to start the next morning where they had left off the evening before. By Elizabeth Weber | PhotosDom by Jeff Weber and SchrammMackenzie Leidig Clinic I want to start by saying thank you to the IDCTA for generously sponsoring my educational grant, and to Dark Horse Stables for hosting such a well-run clinic. Recently I had the privilege of riding my Preliminary mare, Revi, with Dom Schramm. It was an interesting and constructive experience. Mr. Schramm had previously shown and competed Revi, and at the time, was considering syndicating and campaigning her at the 4* level. Because of his prior experience with Revi as well as his plethora of outstanding knowledge, we were able to address some of our issues as a competition team, and left with homework that we will practice as we move forward and become even more competitive on our journey up the levels. Dom immediately recognized Revi, which was nice, and shared a good deal of information about her past which I had not been privy to. Dom spoke with me at length regarding his experience with Revi, the 2017 Adult Eventing Championships. Certain lines were trickier including bitting, future and present plans, and much more. Being for us than others in terms of staying soft and relaxed, but it was very able to speak with Dom about our future goals, as well as our suc- helpful to have Dom there working us through it. We repeated certain cesses and struggles, helped me to focus my efforts moving forward. lines several times because Revi would tense up a bit. By the end, Dom had us jumping much more softly and with a better bascule and shape. The exercises we worked on benefited both Revi and me a great deal. With this educational opportunity from the IDCTA, we were able to focus on various issues, and with the experience and knowledge of a world class rider and coach, we worked through each issue and were given the tools we needed to practice and hone, allowing us to move forward in our eventing career. I am grateful to the IDCTA for the opportunity to ride at the Dark Horse Stable clinic with Dom Schramm. It was very educational in so many ways, and I now have a great deal of work to take home and improve on before I ride Revi with him again. Following our discussion, we were ready to proceed to the riding. The main focus of the clinic for me and Revi was getting her jumping in a relaxed manner and over her back, as well as using her body correctly over the jumps. This has been something we have struggled with. Revi is a hot mare (one might say scalding), and would prefer to tense up rather than to relax over her back, on the flat and over fences. To accomplish our relaxed jumping goal, we started warming up in a long and low fashion. Following several minutes of this, we then incorporated trotting and eventually cantering over poles. Now it was time to add a small bounce question and grid exercises. Throughout these exercises, to keep her relaxed, Dom made certain I kept reaching my hands forward and encouraging a stretch. After all, keeping her soft and relaxed was our main priority. After meeting our relaxation goals through these exercises, we continued by setting a placement rail in front of a vertical (and later an oxer), and then trotted right up to the base, all the while trying to keep her stretchy, and her neck as long as possible. Once an exercise was well executed from the trot, we did the same in canter. When Revi was relaxed through the exercises and sufficiently warmed up, the final task we set out to accomplish in the clinic was to work on courses. Our goal with courses was to translate the relaxed, correct jump that we honed in the exercises to all the fences in the course. Dom set up a course similar to the course from

November 2017 | Page 12 IDCTA Lessons from a By Elizabeth Weber Red Mare Best friends, partners, and teammates come in all shapes, colors, and sizes. I never thought mine would be a petite chestnut mare. Throughout my riding career, my primary competition horses have always been geldings in one form or another -- usually Bay. This past year, I have been extremely blessed to have the privilege of riding an incredibly talented, sweet, yet very sassy red mare. She has found a way to keep all of our rides interesting... to say the least! As they say, “Hell hath no fury like a red headed mare...” These mares always believe they know best. I have thought a lot about the experiences she has given me over this past year, and here are some things I have learned from listening to my little red mare. • Sit up. Always. • Be brave. • Trust. • Sometimes you just need to cuddle. • Be humble. I’m pretty sure Revi is one of the fanciest horses out there. She was bred to do what she does best, and she knows how to turn it on. But for whatever reason, Revi has a little aversion to the sandbox... Sometimes. For no reason. At all. Out of nowhere. She should be scoring in the 20’s, but most of the time we are lucky to score under 40. In our first Preliminary test together, she started bucking and rearing. The judge laughed, and after the halt/salute told me that Revi must have been spooking at the yellow flowers Photo by Xpress Foto by E. I smiled. But it was not the flowers. We scored a 47.3. Which leads me to my next points... • You can make up a lot with a clean cross-country run. Revi is as brave and as bold as it gets. She wants it just as much as I do. For this, I am eternally grateful. • Ride the horse that’s underneath you. • Not every ride will be perfect. And it doesn’t have to be. • Sometimes a step back is really a step forward. Every time our weaknesses show up, we are given the opportunity to reassess, so that we can work to improve what needs more finesse. Don’t let this set you back, but instead let it motivate you to fix what needs fixing, so that you will truly have the all-around competitive package. • Don’t get upset by the little things. Rides will have good moments. Rides will have bad mo- ments. It’s about accepting where you are at that specific moment in time, having set goals for the future but knowing you can only fix so much in a single ride. Improvement takes time. • Big hearts can come in small packages.
