Important discussions are taking place which will shape the future relation between Britain and the EU. The economic analyses published on the issue have, so far, largely failed to grasp the attention of the general public. Most of the discussions about Brexit have focused at a national level and there has been very little evidence-based discussion at a local level. This project aims at stimulating a reflexive participatory research process involving citizens, policy-makers, business people and civil-society representatives. It introduces an innovative methodology that contextualises quantitative data through expert interviews and the analysis of local sources. The reports and discussion panels organised within the framework of the project seek to increase our understanding about the impact of Brexit at a local level. Local context 4 Mansfeld is a local authority of 105,800 inhabitants in Nottinghamshire.4 The majority of the local authority’s population live in the town of Mansfeld, which is situated 20km north of Nottingham. By almost any measure, since the immediate aftermath of the June 16, 2016 Brexit referendum, the British government has been in a state of chaos. The turmoil began with then- Prime Minister David Cameron’s resignation on June 17 and succession by Theresa May within days of the vote. Subsequently, May’s decision to call a snap election in 2017 and the resulting loss of the Conservatives’ parliamentary majority cast doubt on her leadership and further stirred up dissension in her party’s ranks. Perhaps more telling, and the subject of this paper, is the unprecedented number of ministers1—from both senior and junior ranks—that quit the May government over Brexit-related policy disagreements2. Between June 12, 2017 and April 3, 2019, the government witnessed 45 resignations, with high-profile secretaries of state and departmental ministers stepping down to return to the backbenches. Of these, 34 members of her government, including 9 serving in the Cabinet, departed over issues with some aspect of Brexit, ranging from dissatisfaction with the Prime Minister’s Withdrawal Agreement, to disagreements about the proper role of Parliament, to questions about the legitimacy of the entire Brexit process. All told, Theresa May lost more ministers, and at a more rapid pace, than any other prime minister in modern times.

The college was referred to the Commissioner because its financial health was inadequate. The assessment took place on 30-31 August 2018. It is clear from the Commissioner’s report that there has been a serious corporate failure at the college. The college leadership and governors had previously been too slow to react to declining financial performance which resulted in a request for Exceptional Financial Support from Government. I am pleased to see that the board has taken steps to ensure that the college has effective leadership to deliver a recovery plan. The Commissioner has recommended that the Corporation should take urgent steps to improve the effectiveness of governance to successfully guide the college through its current corporate crisis. Given the Significant challenges now facing the college, I am placing the college in Administered Status with immediate effect. The Commissioner and his team and the ESFA will engage regularly with the college to monitor progress, and to ensure the right leadership and governance capability is in place to secure recovery.
