Prof. Dr. Owen Miller August 2020 Professional basketball players in the National Basketball Association (NBA) founded the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) in 1954. The first collective act of professional basketball players under the NBPA was a threat to strike just before the 1964 NBA All-Star Game. Eventually, they had achieved to get the pension plan that they hoped for many years. Larry Fleisher, the general counsel of the NBPA, and Oscar Robertson, the president of the NBPA, were determined to abolish the reserve clause in basketball. The reserve clause restrained the free movement of professional athletes for many years, and NBA players were the ones who established staunch struggle against it, in various ways, including litigation. The NBPA filed a class-action lawsuit, also known as the Oscar Robertson lawsuit, against the merger between two basketball leagues, the NBA, and the ABA (American Basketball Association) in April 1970.

  • Robinson, Flynn 1959
Flynn Robinson Biography Flynn Robinson, Class of 1959 - b. April 28, 1941, d. May 5, 2013 A native of Elgin, Illinois, Robinson graduated in 1959 from Elgin High School. He was the leading scorer for the high school’s conference-championship teams of 1958 and 1959 and among the first class inducted into the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame. Robinson attended Southern Illinois University. He then attended Casper College before transferring to the University of Wyoming. A 6’1” guard at Wyoming, Robinson was a three-time first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honoree. He averaged 26.2 points per game as a sophomore, 25.6 points as a junior and 27 points as a senior. His 2,049 points place him third on Wyoming’s all-time scoring list, and in 2005 he was named to the school’s All-Century team. Flynn Robinson, a sharpshooting guard who came off the bench to add scoring punch for one of the greatest teams in N.B.A. history, the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, died on Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 72. The cause was multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells, said Kevin McKinney, a senior associate athletic director at the University of Wyoming, where Robinson starred in the 1960s. When Robinson played for the Milwaukee Bucks, their broadcaster, Eddie Doucette, called him the Electric Eye. When he joined the Lakers, their broadcaster, Chick Hearn, called him Mr. Instant Point. The 6-foot-1-inch Robinson was a reserve behind Jerry West and Gail Goodrich for the Laker team that won a league-record 33 consecutive games, went 69-13 in the regular season and then captured the franchise’s first league championship in Los Angeles, defeating the Knicks in a five- game final series.

The San Diego Clippers: A Dream Ends Travis Degheri With the departure of the San Diego Clippers National Basketball Associa- tion (NBA) team, San Diego’s dream of being a part of the NBA abruptly ended. The San Diego Rockets had been sold to Houston in 1971.1 When the ill-fated ABA team—The San Diego Conquistadors—failed in 1975, they were replaced with high hopes by the recently formed NBA expansion team, the Buffalo Braves, soon to become known as the San Diego Clippers.2 San Diego basketball fans once again flocked to buy tickets to see famous NBA players in action. Within six years, local residents saw their dreams end once again, this time with little understanding of what took place to lose the team to Los Angeles. Today’s Clippers originated as the Buffalo Braves in 1970 as one of three expan- sion teams entering the NBA. The others were the Portland Trail Blazers and the Cleveland Cavaliers, leaving the Buffalo Braves with the need to prove themselves on the court and establish their team as a prominent franchise.3 After a disappoint- ing first few seasons, the Buffalo Braves were eventually able to take second place in the Atlantic conference by winning three of their seven playoff games.4 By the end of their 1977-78 season, however, the Buffalo Braves’ luck seemed to be wear- ing out as they finished the season in fourth place with a disappointing record of 27 wins and 55 losses.5 Despite this poor showing on the court, the NBA sent a proposal to the Buffalo Braves owner, John Y.

THE ABA YEARS A LOOK BACK AT THE ABA YEARS THE COACHES 1967-69 - CLIFF HAGAN 1969-70 - CLIFF HAGAN & MAX WILLIAMS 1970-71 - MAX WILLIAMS & BILL BLAKELEY 1971-72 - TOM NISSALKE 1972-73 - BABE MCCARTHY & DAVE BROWN 1973-74 - TOM NISSALKE 1974-76 - BOB BASS THE STARS CLIFF HAGAN FIRST PLAYER-COACH Player-Coach Cliff Hagan was a big reason for the Chaparrals early success … he was a fi ve-time All-Star with the St. Louis Hawks prior to arriving in Dallas … his physical style was perfect for the ABA and in his fi rst season of 1967-68, Hagan averaged 18.2 points per game, leading to another All-Star selection. He was relieved of his coaching duties in January 1970, when General Manager Max Williams took over as head coach. JOHN BEASLEY 1968, 1969 & 1970 ABA ALL-STAR John Beasley was the biggest surprise for the Dallas Chaparrals in their inaugural season … in his fi rst year, Beasley averaged 19.7 points per game … he made the ABA All-Star Team each of his fi rst three seasons and was named the MVP of the 1969 All-Star Game … he also garnered All-ABA Second Team honors in 1968 and 1969 … Beasley ranks second in Spurs ABA history in games, points, fi eld goals made and fi eld goals attempted … for his career with the Chaparrals, Beasley averaged 17.9 points and 11.0 rebounds while shooting .494 from the fi eld and .828 from the free throw line. RON BOONE 1968-69 ABA ALL-ROOKIE FIRST TEAM A major bright spot of the Chaparrals’ 1968-69 season was rookie phenom Ron Boone … Boone attracted very little attention during his college career at Idaho State, but that all changed when he got to the pros … Boone fi nished second to Warren Armstrong of Oakland for Rookie of the Year accolades … in his rookie season, Boone averaged 18.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting .434 from the fi eld and .812 from the free throw line.
