The Koski Loop

Working with Kevin Koski can lead to some pretty interesting discussions. The other day at lunch he told me about a "fun" day hike he had done the day before, and it was in, of all places, the Olympics. Knowing that the Olympics are not his usual first choice, I had to enquire just where he had been.

"You start at the Tubal Cain trailhead, go up to Tull Canyon," he said, "then proceed up to the pass between Hawk Peak & Mt. Worthington. Head north and climb Hawk Peak. Drop down the way trail to Silver Lake; then pick up the trail to Mt. Townsend Once you're at Mt. Townsend, just head down the Dirty Face Ridge Trail to your car. Simple! Total Trip time was 8 hours, btfi that included a nap at the Mt. Townsend summit. Piece of cake!" Even though it sounded brutal, it also sounded intriguing. I have been to Hawk Peak from Silver Lake, and I've been to the Hawk-Worthington Pass, but never thought to combine the trip into one hike.

Since the Mt. Adams hike was off (route closed due to fire) I figured "What the heck, why not give it a try." I spent Thursday and Friday calling masochists that I knew, trying to find a partner. If I was going to die in the woods, I at least wanted somebody to know where to find the body. I was able to convince two fellow PWC'ers, Fred El1is and David Boyde, to give it a try.

We left Bremerton at 06:40 and met Fred at Starbucks in Poulsbo. After a coffee & doughnut (the Breakfast of Champions) we left for the Tubal Cain trailhead, making it there by 09:00. The light drizzle on the Hood Canal Bridge was left far behind, and we were in SLINLIGHT! The trail is in fantastic shape; and as I hiked with my Super Makalus, I was wishing that I had taken Kevin's advice and taken sneakers. Taking a left up to Tull Canyon changed the angle of incline, causing Dave and me to slow down; but Fred, a retired professional marathon rutner, was hardly breaking a sweat.

Dave and Fred had never seen the B-17 wreck, so we spent some time exploring the wreckage fiom the plane. After that we started up the valley and immediately lost the trail in a boulder field. We spanned out on either side of the creek (Dave had the worst of it trying to follow the creek bed). Fred quickly found the trail on the North slope of the valley.

We followed the way trail as it slowly petered out near the pass. Three hours into the hike we were at the pass, just below Hawk Peak. There were a few snow patches, not much water, and a spectacular display of wildflowers. Although, there is no set trail to Hawk Peak, the route is a series of easy benches to the summit, which was easily bagged.

From Hawk Peak, the trail descends the east slope to an easy boulder field, just above Silver Lakes. There we met two local families with two young girls (aged about 7) who were fishing for dinner. They had about l0 Brook trout that definitely looked like they would make a tasty meal. We stopped for lunch, and enjoyed the "food of the gods," peanut butter & jelly on wheat bread.

The only trouble with the Silver Lakes Trail is that it DROPS 500 feet before it climbs back up to the pass; I hate to pay fcr the same real estate twice! There were about a half a dozen downed trees along the trail, but other than those, there were no pr# lems. The plan was to follow the ridge to Townsend, but we opted to stick to the trail. By this time Dave and I were pretty beat, so Fred would hike about 20 minutes in front of us, then wait 'til we caught up. We kept this routine until we got to Mt. Torm- send, where we ran in to Jill Hawes and Laura Rightmyer, who had climbed Townsend on the Sink Lake Trail. After a 15-minute discussion of the day (and jokes from them about the ice axes we were carrying) we headed to the summil.

Unlike the last 20 trips to Mt. Townsend, this was a beautiful day without a cloud in the sky. We shared the moment with about 40 other people (Mt, Townsend was VERY popular last Saturday) and headed down the Dirty Face Ridge Trail.

Kevin had wamed me that the last part of the trajl was steep; and if Kevin says that it is steep, the rest ofus probably need a rope and a belay! The trail descends gradually to the lower Big Quil Trail, then meanders along the ridge for about a mile. The last mile to mile & a half is, well, STEEP, We made it in 8 hours, 15 minutes (O.K., we wanted to be as fast as Kevin, we just couldn't quite do it). Photos: Recent PWC Outings
