Fudge the Elf
1 Fudge The Elf Ken Reid The Laura Maguire collection Published October 2019 All Rights Reserved Sometime in the late nineteen nineties, my daughter Laura, started collecting Fudge books, the creation of the highly individual Ken Reid. The books, the daily strip in 'The Manchester Evening News, had been a part of my childhood. Laura and her brother Adam avidly read the few dog eared volumes I had managed to retain over the years. In 2004 I created a 'Fudge The Elf' website. This brought in many contacts, collectors, individuals trying to find copies of the books, Ken's Son, the illustrator and colourist John Ridgeway, et al. For various reasons I have decided to take the existing website off-line. The PDF faithfully reflects the entire contents of the original website. Year in Review 2020 – 2021
YEAR IN REVIEW 2020 – 2021 THE GARMENT DISTRICT ALLIANCE 1 WELCOME BACK Like most of Midtown, the Garment District faced new challenges this past year. Pedestrian counts were well below normal, as office tenants predominantly worked from home and ground floor businesses remained closed or limited their hours. Reduced activity impacted public safety and affected the ways in which we typically measure success. However, the Garment District Alliance was never more important to the neighborhood than it was this year. Despite the pandemic, our office never closed, as our dedicated staff continued to provide critical public safety and sanitation services. We worked closely with the West Midtown community, our neighboring BIDs, and the City of New York to tackle quality of life issues. We supported our local companies through social media promotions and business development initiatives, and we pushed forward with important streetscape, horticulture, and public art projects. In short, we kept the Garment District ready for business, while laying the groundwork for the years ahead. Today, we are happy to report that a slow but steady stream of employees is returning to the neighborhood. We are thankful for all the resilient companies of the Garment District, several of whom we celebrate in the pages of this report. Whether they have returned to the neighborhood or can’t wait to come back, our diverse businesses community is what will continue to make the Garment District a vibrant part of Midtown. Recovery has begun. We look forward to everyone getting back to business. Barbara A. For Immediate Release the WORLD's OLDEST TEDDY BEAR
For Immediate Release 30 August 2006 Contact: Zoë Schoon 020.7752.3121 [email protected] THE WORLD’S OLDEST TEDDY BEAR MUSEUM TO BE SOLD BY PRIVATE TREATY AT CHRISTIE’S SOUTH KENSINGTON The Teddy Bear Museum, Stratford-upon-Avon South Kensington – Christie’s are pleased to present, by private treaty, the sale of the world’s oldest Teddy Bear Museum, based in Stratford-upon-Avon. The award-winning museum was opened by self- confessed teddy bear enthusiast and well known broadcaster Gyles Brandreth and his wife Michele, on 4th July 1988. Since then, this popular little museum has gone from strength to strength in one of England’s most celebrated towns. Stratford-upon-Avon attracts five million tourists annually and visitors to the Teddy Bear Museum have ranged from royalty to Tony Blair’s bear, Lynton, who recently spent his summer holidays at the Museum. The collection, personally put together by Brandreth, numbers a thousand bears and related items. It is to be sold as a going concern, along with the Tudor building (once the property of King Henry VIII) that has been its home for the last 18 years. “The Museum has come of age and it’s now time for us to find new owners for the museum and its unique collection. Our children are all grown-up and my work commitments mean that I simply don’t have the time to give it the care and attention it deserves. We want to find new owners for the Museum who will love it as much as we do and see it go from strength to strength.” Said Gyles Brandreth Highlights of the collection include several early Steiff bears, the earliest being Growler, a much- sought-after Steiff rod-bear, circa 1904. -

VOLUME 12, NUMBER 24, DECEMBER 15th, 2004 Christmas Festival Draws Hundreds Many Groups Combined to Organize Holiday Extravanganza By Jennifer Hudson Mr. Jack Thompson, Master of Ceremo- nies for the Official Opening Ceremony of the Abaco Christmas Festival, quickly scanned the fairgrounds and jokingly gave an estimate of the crowd there for the folks listening to the proceedings live on Radio Abaco. Whilst his assessment may have been a little exag- gerated and caused some amusement, the resi- dents of Abaco were certainly out in vast num- bers to enjoy this first ever Christmas Fair where so many civic organizations and indi- viduals had come together to provide Christ- mas cheer and a fun time for all. Mr. Th- ompson welcomed the many distinguished guests to the Festival held on December 11at the Memorial Plaza in Marsh Harbour. Following a prelude of lively Christmas music by violinist Jennifer Hudson, a prayer was offered by Rev. Stephen Knowles, Presi- dent of the Abaco Christian Council. Prior to the welcome and remarks by Ms. Jeritzen Outten, Director of Tourism for Abaco, the choir of St. Francis de Sales School rendered the National Anthem and a Christ- mas carol. She shared with her audience the fact that she has now completed one year of her three-year tenure here and that, although she hails from Grand Bahama which she loves, she is definitely “in love with Abaco.” She Children enjoyed the day at the Christmas Festival. Santa Claus was there listening to their wishes and they were entertained with has been amazed at the very diverse natural games and other activities. -
General Comments
Introduction The Playwright There are writers who say, "It 's good to have written, .. and there are writers who say, "It's good to write . .. I'm ofthe latter sort. Mark Medon: 2003 Mark Medoff writes stories. He writes stories not only because he wants to, but also because he must. This somewhat selfish, self-absorbing, but nonetheless privileged and gratifying undertaking - as he describes it - inhabits him, much like the characters of his playscripts, screenplays, and novel insinuate themselves into his consciousness, whether or not he invites them. For Medoff, writing crystallizes human behavior; it dissects, massages, and textures thoughts and concerns which preoccupy him constantly and insist upon some sort of conceptualized release. This release is prolific and takes the form of fiction and nonfiction; screenplays, lyrics, librettos, and a novel; full-length, one-act, musical, non-musical, adult, family, and holiday plays. Writing cleanses Medoff of the sullying influences of world events and enables him to exorcise demons. The process by which this happens is habitual. In deeply concentrated work throughout early to late morning or afternoon hours, Medoff dismisses his perceptual, analytical self and allows pent up musings to spill out unabated, like so much projectile vomit (Mr. Medoff apologizes for this graphic but accurate analogy). Sometime around early afternoon, he escapes to the gym or some sports activity. For Medoff, exercise is an indispensable life function and a profoundly important formative influence dating back to the tender age of five or , 2 six when his athletically accomplished father first taught him to throw and catch a ball. -
