Golden Anniversary 50 Years of Village News

We are pleased to present the first publication of ‘ NEWS’ were the first words written on a piece of paper before they were typed, stencilled, duplicated along with other handwritten news entries in October for the November 1969 News.

Alan Farnaby and I also wrote that we would try to publish on the 1st of every month and bring the News free to every house in the Village.

Now, in this 600th edition we can proudly say a Village News has been delivered to every home for 50 years. Sadly, Alan is not here to share in this achievement which was just one of the many things that he did for our village. Thanks Alan.

Over the years, many village people have shared in the production and distribution or supporting with fundraising and donations when new equipment was needed. A most essential factor has been the financial support received from the people and businesses who have paid to advertise for a year. This ensured a free distribution could be maintained and we hope they have benefitted by village people using their services.

In November Richard Haste and I have an opportunity to say more about the development of the News from hand operation to electronic at the History Group meeting on Friday, 29th November. A history of printing and life in Sheriff Hutton.

So, congratulations to the village of Sheriff Hutton in maintaining this valuable means of communication to all its residents for 50 years and thank you to all the people who have played a part in its production.

What will Village News be like in the next 50 years?

Parish Council www.sheriffhutton.co.uk The Parish Council met on the 13th September 2019. Councillors present at the meeting were Douglas Wooles (Chairman), Penny Bean (Vice-Chairman), Elaine Nelson, Dave Smith, Sally Wright, Marcus Oxendale and Martin Dodd. 4 members of the public (part meeting only).

Planning Applications for consideration:- 19/00888/FUL Land Rear of Park View, Finkle Street, Sheriff Hutton Erection of 2no. four-bedroom detached dwellings with detached double garages together with formation of vehicular access and associated landscaping. Decision – Sheriff Hutton Parish Council OBJECT to this planning application, on the following grounds:- No attempt has been made to alleviate any of the concerns raised in the previous application; over development of the area, since the last application was approved Sheriff Hutton has seen an overfill of large, expensive houses; inappropriate larger type of houses proposed which would be unlikely to attract families into the village or those needing to downsize; the scale of the proposed houses is intrusive; the access of the proposed location, with visibility towards Sheriff Hutton limited by a bend in the road; the width of the access road is unacceptable and inaccurate on the plans submitted; the limiting capacity of the existing water and drainage systems. The recent incidents of flooding and standing water have been experienced by the adjacent residents and this has been exacerbated by recent climate changes; the ecological impact of replacing existing natural boundary hedging with fencing; concerns surrounding the existing medieval ridge and furrow field system; the development would have a material adverse impact on the amenity of the present occupants of neighbouring land, including a loss of privacy to existing houses.

19/00829/HOUSE 1 Glebe Cottages, Church End, Sheriff Hutton Erection of first floor extension. Decision – No Objection.

19/01014/HOUSE Laburnum Cottage, West End, Sheriff Hutton Erection of replacement outbuilding to form artists studio for personal use of applicant. Decision – No Objection.

Planning decisions or appeals received:- 19/00753/HOUSE Foss House, Sheriff Hutton Alterations to dwelling to include the erection of single storey side extension. APPROVED.

19/00716/HOUSE Old School House, Main Street, Sheriff Hutton Erection of a double garage with associated vehicular access. APPROVED.

19/00609/FUL Cornborough Hall, Cornborough Road, Sheriff Hutton Change of use, conversion and alterations to outbuildings to form 1 no. two bedroom holiday let with associated landscaping. APPROVED.

19/00610/LBC Cornborough Hall, Cornborough Road, Sheriff Hutton Change of use, conversion and alterations to outbuildings to form 1 no. two bedroom holiday let with associated landscaping. APPROVED.

Community Speed Watch (CSW) As part of a National Police Speed Campaign, designed to raise public awareness of the dangers of speeding, the Speedwatch Team were invited to participate on the 20th August. We carried out two one-hour sessions, a total of 569 vehicles passed through, with 4 vehicles exceeding the allowed tolerance, one at 38 mph. In North 20 CSW teams took part recording 186 speeding offences, and Mobile Safety Camera vans recorded a further 349 0ffences, a disappointing total of 535 offences in ONE day. Breaking the speed limit knocks seconds off the average journey, but massively increases the risk of killing someone should you have an incident. Sheriff Hutton Village Market Each month so far we have really enjoyed seeing our regular stall holders as well as introducing new stalls each month. In September we welcomed a local deli and a traditional style sweet stall which went down a storm with adults and children alike. In October we can't wait for the new Indian cuisine stall providing us with delicious sauces as well as our favourite accompaniments for a delicious curry night at home. For all those missing the cheese and wine stalls, don't worry they’ll be back in October. Congratulations also to this month's competition winner, keep your eyes on our Facebook page for more chances to win!

Also, our thanks to the Youth Club and PTFA for running fantastic cafes at the last 2 markets who raised £400 and £450 respectively for their causes. I know the volunteers look forward to those bacon and sausage butties in the morning and all groups have treated market goers to a delicious selection of homemade goodies. We look forward to welcoming the cricket club next month.

Are you tall or do you find you're walking the dog first thing on a Sunday morning by the Hall? We need some help setting up between 7:30am and 8:30am on market mornings, putting up the market stall tarpaulins, getting bunting up, popping the signs out and tying the parking rope in place - if you could pop down, we'd appreciate the help. Or if you're not an early bird, helping for even an hour car parking would be great.

Finally, are you a social media genius or a technical whizz, could you help raise our online profile and support us? We are also looking for someone who could provide admin support (circa 10 hours a week) responding to emails, assisting with new enquiries and paperwork - if you are interested in any way, let us know, it would be great to expand the team. Contact us on [email protected] or through the Facebook page.

Next market: Sunday 20th October Sheriff Hutton Village Hall Friends – 200 Club September £25 prize winners were 10, 14, 160, 179 and 182.

There will be refreshments: tea, coffee, cake and maybe even a glass of wine. So come and enjoy.

Anyone wishing to join the group or needing more information about Field Naturalists, please get in touch with either Dave on 878672, Jim on 878667 or Tricia on 878995.

Message from the Jumblies Our first jumble sale of the Autumn/Winter on 7th September, was tremendous success. All the clothes stalls were piled high with good quality clothes and the other stalls also had plenty to sell. Our usual keen buyers were queuing from 12.00 noon all wanting to spend. The added bonus of dry sunny weather meant we were also able to have stalls outside. A very good cake stall contributed to the total of £2,315 being raised for Yorkshire Cancer Research. This brings our total for this year so far to £14,753.

The total raised at the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning held on the 28th September will be published in the November News.

Our next Jumble Sale will be on the 12th October to raise money for the Marie Curie Nurses. There are many people in our community who have had the support of these dedicated people who not only nurse terminally ill patients at home but also provide support for their carers too. All the money raised goes to support the nurses working in area.

If you are sorting out your winter wardrobe and putting away your summer clothes we welcome your cast off clothing. Bric-a-brac, books, household linen, toys etc will also be gratefully received. We will be at the Village Hall from 8.30am to receive your donations. Please note we will close the doors at 11.30 to give us plenty of time to sort everything ready for the sale.

Books and cakes will be on sale from 1pm and the main Jumble Sale will start at 2pm. If you are not able to bring your jumble on the morning of the sale please contact me or Pat Cooper on 878677 or any of the Jumblies to make alternative arrangements.

Sheriff Hutton Art Group As we approach our AGM it is amazing that the Art Group is entering its 47th year.

After three informal painting mornings this Summer, we will all be looking forward to the five monthly Workshops which begin in October. Due to our healthy membership numbers, we have been able to book some exciting artists to run the workshops this coming year. News From The Village Hall Greetings from the Village Hall! As you may have noticed areas of the outside and inside the hall have recently been decorated and spruced up, keeping it looking smart. We have also had tiles put beneath the hand-dryers in the all the recently refurbished toilets, to protect the walls and help keep them clean.

As yet, no-one has come forward offering to take over the role of booking secretary. We need someone by 1st January 2020. This role could be done by two people and full support and training will be given. The position of booking secretary is absolutely central to keeping the hall running. No booking secretary, no bookings! If we cannot find anyone willing to volunteer, we will have to consider employing someone. This would inevitably significantly increase hire prices. If you would like to find out more about what the role entails, please contact me. Sarah Douglas (Chair of Operations, Village Hall) 01347 879038

Notices for Sheriff Hutton Remembrance Sunday This year we will be focusing on World War 2. If anyone has any memories from parents or grandparents for example, who were involved and would like such recollections included in the service, then please let us know. You don’t need to say anything in the service, but we are looking at including a collection of memories of how Sheriff people were involved. Also, if anyone has any memorabilia that they wouldn’t mind being on display then again, please let us know.

St Helen’s – not just a building but serving our village community Did you know the church is used for all sorts of things – not just for services on a Sunday or weddings, christenings or funerals !

People come for a quiet time and contemplation, to bring children in so they can visit the children’s pew, to leave a request for prayers, for musical concerts, to explore the Richard the Third historical connections and to visit what could be the tomb of his son, to see the conservation area in the churchyard.

Many people contribute to the life of the church even though they don’t come to services. We are very appreciative of those who clean, do flowers, clean the brasses, help with catering and the Village Market café, bake for all sorts of events, mow the churchyard, give us a Jumble Sale and Village Market café,

Our big events of the year are Remembrance, Christmas and Easter and everyone is welcome. We’re also thinking about more family-type services, e.g. a Pet Service and also Evensong in the summer with afternoon tea.

We want the church to play an active role in village life and be there for future generations to use in whatever way is best for them. We are always looking for ideas of how the church can be used and it is a great facility with brilliant acoustics. If you or a group are interested in finding out more in using the church as a venue or would like to be involved in any way at all, then please just contact Jill or Neil Hodges on 878595 or [email protected]

New Year Party As reported in September, the UCCC will be holding their New Year Party on Saturday 4th January 2020. Please keep that date in your diary! More information will follow nearer to the date. If you are able to help – food preparation, waiting at tables, providing lifts, or delivering teas out – please let Caroline know asap. We will be contacting everyone who has already expressed an interest to allocate roles in the next few weeks. Caroline can be contacted at [email protected]

The Gardening Club Our meeting in October will in the Village Hall, as usual, at 7.30 on Wednesday, October 16th and we have Peter Walker coming to talk to us about Carnivorous Plants.

Gardening Tips for the month. • Scarify and aerate lawns to remove moss and dead grass to improve drainage. • Prepare an area of soil in the veg plot/raised bed for planting onion sets and incorporate a moderate amount of well-rotted compost or manure. Rake in some balanced compound fertiliser, eg Growmore at approximately, 6 grams/4ozs per square metre. Plant the sets 150mm (6inch) apart with the top of the set only just below the surface of the soil, water in and check from time to time that the sets have not been disturbed by birds etc. • Bulbs and Corms. If these are not already in situ, Narcissus bulbs should be planted as soon as possible. Tulip bulbs can be planted later this month and during early November. Plant 150mm to 200mm (6-8”) deep. Hyacinths, other bulbs and corms to be grown in containers for bringing indoors at a later date need to be planted in free draining compost. Water thoroughly and place the containers on a sheltered, well drained surface. Cover them with 150mm (6”) layer of well broken up soil or clean, old compost to form a plunge bed. Bulbs and corms need a period of cold weather, about 10 weeks, to develop a good root system and shoots. They cannot be rushed! Check at regular intervals that the plunge bed is moist enough and that squirrels, mice, slugs and snails etc. are not causing damage. It is important that bulbs and corms are allowed time to develop good roots and shoots 50 to 75mm high, in the case of hyacinths, daffodils and tulips at least, before being brought into the conservatory, greenhouse, porch or indoors. • Tidy up the beds and borders but do try to leave the flower/seed heads of many herbaceous perennials such as Michaelmas Daisy, Rudbeckia, Eryngium etc intact as they can look attractive when covered with hoar frost and they provide food for small birds. • Bring tender, non-hardy perennials such as pelargoniums into a frost free place before the keener frosts strike later this month.

Not All Doom And Gloom We live in an uncertain world, ever changing and full of conflict, troubles and dangers, yet also, thank God, full of hope. There is so much uncertainty and division between nations and within our own nation. The newspapers and internet media present us with confusing news reports, in amongst the spin and the hype, the truth is out there.

In the midst of all this uncertainty, what solid thing can we hold on to? What can be our rock? Who can we depend upon?

Life can be tough, true. We all experience our ups and downs and sometimes circumstances bring us to the realisation that we are not nearly so independent and self-supporting as we think we are, or would hope to be. Those are the times when it is good to have someone to turn to for help, to depend upon. St Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians tells us that three things last for ever – faith, hope and love and the greatest of these is love. God’s love for us is amazing and an unending support for us in good times and bad. That we can depend upon.

We are celebrating harvest once again and giving thanks for the work of the farmers and fisherman and all involved in connecting the food chain to us. We thank them for their long-term unwavering commitment to the harvest, which we do depend upon.

It is not only the farmers who are asked to plant seed. So are we all in our day to day dealings with family, friends, neighbours and all those we meet, whereby they may see and hear in our actions and words the love of God which we can all depend upon.

Robert Louis Stevenson wrote: “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.”

We are thankful for the harvest of the earth and look forward in hope to the harvest of heaven. Three things last forever, faith, hope and love. Depend upon it.

So, whatever the weather, whether it has been a wet winter and a dry summer, or indeed a mixture of both, we are fortunate to have farmers who produce a harvest. Many will say that they work with three things: a tractor, the weather and God. Our farmers work the land in faith, they tend it in hope and the love and grace of God enables a harvest – something to indeed give thanks for and cause for celebration.

Harvest is a time to celebrate, and rightly so: the produce we all enjoy; the skills of all those who work on the land; and the world that God has given us. We may independently be in awe of the countryside we see, or we may take a silent moment to rest in the beauty of creation. We may seek to do this in an act of worship, joining with many others to give thanks. We may attend a Harvest Supper and collectively give thanks. Or we may individually in our own way acknowledge just what and how much we have and are to give thanks for – thanks be to God!

Blessings, Steve

League Reports. The Men’s team have had a good season and have finished in 3rd place. They missed out on promotion by the narrowest of margins, with all to play for in the final match, against the top club, the match finished in a draw, not quite enough for promotion but a great team effort. Thanks must go to Josh Williams who has been captain again this year.

The Ladies also needed to win their last match to gain promotion but hampered by injuries this was not to be. However, they finished a very creditable 3rd. Thanks to Christine who despite the rain at the beginning of the season and the injuries at the end managed to complete the fixtures list and almost get the team promoted.
