September 27-28 , 2020 • ONLINE September 27-28 , 2020 • ONLINE Welcome Welcome to the 2020 Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC) and Honor Society (NHS/NJHS) Workshop sponsored by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) and the Texas Association of Student Councils. Student Councils and Honor Societies complement and support one another at the cam- pus level as well as share many members in common. In addition, student councils support all student organizations on campus. Therefore, this workshop is designed to provide training experiences in areas that are specific to student council and honor society and common to almost any student activity group. TASSP/TASC is excited and proud to host this event and welcome exemplary educators to our first virtual Advisors Workshop. We look forward to two days of connection, education, inspiration, and fun. The program was carefully designed to offer a dynamic combination of peer and professional presenters who are out- standing resources for any activity advisor. We have a help desk ready to assist you with any difficulties with the conference platform. The TASC theme for this year is RESET. We hope to provide what you need to be able not only to RESET for success this year but also to empower your students to become agents of change in this challenging year. The TASSP motto is “Above All, Students First.” TASC believes that when student councils, honor societies, and all other student led activity groups on a campus collaborate effectively and when advisors receive meaningful training, students are best served in Texas schools and beyond. It is our hope that this workshop provides you the experiences necessary to lead these outstanding students in your schools. Best wishes for a great workshop. Archie E. McAfee Terry Hamm TASSP/TASC Executive Director TASC Director 2020 TASC State Service Project The children and families in the Texas foster system are an incredibly underserved community. And this pandemic makes their situation worse as many courts have been closed; resources are more difficult to access; and families are struggling financially and emotionally. Foster Care is the perfect candidate for the TASC State Service Project. Please visit the TASC Website (www.tasconline.org) and review more information about how you and your students can help foster children and the families who serve them. • TEA Releases 2017 Accountability Ratings
TEA News Releases Online Aug. 15, 2017 TEA releases 2017 accountability ratings AUSTIN – The Texas Education Agency (TEA) today released the 2017 state accountability ratings for more than 1,200 school districts and charters, as well as more than 8,700 campuses statewide. The ratings reveal that approximately 95 percent of school districts and charters across Texas have achieved the rating of Met Standard. In addition, the number of individual campuses achieving a rating of Met Standard or Met Alternative Standard increased again this year, while the number of campuses receiving a rating of Improvement Required continued to decline. Districts, campuses, and charters receive one of three ratings under the accountability system: Met Standard, Met Alternative Standard, or Improvement Required. School district ratings (including charter operators) by category in 2017 are as follows: DISTRICT LEVEL 2017 RATING DISTRICT CHARTER TOTAL PERCENT Met Standard/Alternative 993 153 1,146 95.3% Met Standard 993 126 1,119 93.0% Met Alternative Standard N/A 27 27 2.2% Improvement Required 28 16 44 3.7% Not Rated 2 11 13 1.1% TOTAL 1,023 180 1,203 100.0% The 2017 ratings are based on a system that uses a performance index framework that includes four areas: Index 1 – Student Achievement (which provides a snapshot of performance across all subjects); Index 2 – Student Progress (which measures year-to-year student progress by student group); Index 3 – Closing Performance Gaps (which emphasizes the academic achievement of economically disadvantaged students and the lowest performing racial/ethnic student groups); and Index 4 – Postsecondary Readiness (which emphasizes the importance of earning a high school diploma that provides students with the foundation necessary for success in college, the workforce, job training programs or the military).

People would rather disappoint their own expectations than let the team down. Barbers Hill has been educating students since 1929 and it is one of the few dis- tricts that has maintained excel- lence throughout its long storied history. One of the drivers of this excel- lence is the determination of past and current leaders that the baton will not be dropped and that each graduating class will build on the past accomplishments and set the bar even higher. I am proud that the current staff and students are carrying on the proud traditions and excellence of “The Hill.” The challenge for the upcoming school year is simple: Make a great district even better! We truly have one of the best districts in the state and I cannot imagine a better place where students could get a better education.
