    The wreck of S.S. "WAIRARAPA'' New Zealand By Dr. Andrew M.T. Cheung FRPSL Historic Background The Wairarapa was a New Zealand ship of the late 19th Century plying the route between the Auckland, New Zealand and Australia; a journey of over 1,250 miles. It had a gross weight of 1716 tons and was built in Dumbarton, Soctland in 1882 for the Union Steam Ship Company. It came to tragic fame when it struck a reef and sunk about 100km off Auckland at the northern edge of Great Barrier Island. 140 people died in this incident and it remains one of the largest losses of human life related to maritime disaster in New Zealand’s history. The Wairarapa sailed from Sydney, Australia on 24 October 1894. The ship’s destination was New Zealand port city of Auckland. The ship’s Captain was Captain J.S. McIntosh. Despite the dense fog and storms encountered when the ship reached the North Island of New Zealand, McIntosh refused to slow the ship from nearly full speed of 13 knots. Fatally, the ship went off-course, possibly due to a faulty compass bearing. Whatever the cause, the ship skirted to the west of the Poor Knights Islands, not the east. As a consequence she was much closer to the mainland than the ship’s crew believed. On Monday, October 29, 1894, the Wairarapa, with more than 230 passengers and crew aboard, crashed on to rocks at Miner's Head on Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand shortly after midnight.

Signature: Date: 23 April 2014 ii iii Abstract In 1876, at Redgate Beach off the south-west coast of Western Australia, 16- year-old Grace Bussell and Aboriginal stockman Sam Isaacs are said to have ridden horses into pounding surf to rescue 50 passengers from the stranded Georgette steamship. Grace and Sam were hailed as heroes, even though some survivor accounts credited this rescue to the ship’s crew. To this day the riders’ celebrity has eclipsed the actions of several unsung heroes, crew and passengers who committed an astonishing act of bravery in this maritime tragedy. Whatever transpired at Redgate Beach, the absolute truth can never be known. Such is my quandary in writing an historical novel (the creative component of my thesis), an account of the shipwreck based on extensive research and, as far as I am aware, the first long format narrative about the incident. As I negotiate the divide between fact and imagination, my approach is informed by the process of writing the exegetical component, comprising an analysis of literary and historiographical discourse on the disarticulation between fact and fiction in historical novels.

    As adults, with families of their own, the children of Thomas and Elizabeth Medland built a school for their children in the 1930s, as their numbers grew (Fig.152). This avoided the long journey to Tryphena. The Medland family contributed greatly to the Great Barrier infrastructure when the brothers built a road between Medlands and Tryphena and with their neighbour, Cyril Eyre, constructed the wharf at Puriri Bay. (Refer 3.1.4.2). There are still a number of extant built places on the island that are associated with the history of the Medland family. The old cowshed/sawmill which was once part of the Woolstone farm, built in the 1920s is still on its original site. The Medlands school, built c1932, has been relocated within the Medlands area and has been converted into a bach (Fig. 153). The creamery and wash house have also been relocated to what was once Grace Benson’s (nee Medland) property in Sandhills Road. 4.2.3.10 Tryphena The Barstows Robert Barstow arrived in Auckland on the Bangalore in 1843 from England, purchased land at Tamaki as an intended grain farm. Undertaking a trip to South America in 1844, Barstow did not return to Auckland until late 1845. It was around this time, that he purchased land at Mulberry Grove, Tryphena. In 1846, he married Jane Hulme, who was the daughter of the Commanding Officer of the British Contingent in New Zealand, Lieutenant Colonel Hulme. Although they settled on the farm in Tamaki, he was spending a substantial amount of time on the Barrier on what he called his cattle ranch.

HISTORY DESCRIPTION The Union Company’s steamer SS Wairarapa was wrecked off Miners Head, Great Barrier Island shortly after midnight on the 29th October 1894. Of the 235 passengers and crew on board, approximately 130 lives were lost, making it the third worst shipping disaster in New Zealand history.1 The Wairarapa was making record time on route from Sydney to Auckland when, after rounding North Cape, it encountered dense fog.
