Exercises, Basic scales will be put into use with the Irish tune the Rakes of Mallow, Level HD S-4 which will train your ears, eyes, and hands while teaching you a popular jam Etudes & Ear 1 Training-I tune.

Exercises, We'll cover sixths, thirds, and octaves, putting them into the silly Welsh reel Level F-1 HD "The New Harp (Y Delyn Newydd)". This also includes beginning arranging Etudes & 2 S-1 Intervals- Level II ideas!

An Irish Jig for All Level Turn your scales and triads into a tune that flies up and down the dulcimer, HD S-5 Seasons (& Ear 2 while practicing both hand leads and is surprisingly easy to learn by ear! Training-Level III)

Waltz Fills, Trills, Level Using South Wind, I will show you classic ways to add harmonies, turns and HD S-7 & Turns 3 fills in 3/4 (which work in other time signatures too!)

2-octave Arpeggios, Level Using the French Canadian "Woodchopper's Reel", we'll work on 3 different HD S-1 Etudes, & Ear 2 chord shapes with roller coaster arpeggio rides! Training-Level III

Transforming So you want to play for the labyrinth at your church, yoga class, or become a Dance Tunes into Level therapeutic musician, but all you know are fast dance tunes. No problem! We will play it HD F-5 Irish lullaby 4 in C- using a lighter and less-frequented part of the dulcimer. Perfect for recovering from frantic speed learning!

We Shall The beautiful Civil Rights song that Guy Carawan crafted from older African- Overcome- an Level American hymns is as relevant today as ever. With lush harmonies and a HD F-2 anthem for our 3 simple melody, I will teach you a version you can play anywhere. (BYOT- times Bring Your Own Tissues)

Accents, Using the Irish reel the Gold Stud (by Maurice Lennon), you'll learn how to Level HD F-4 feel and play: down beats, back beats, different divisions, and put in a Chromatics & 4 Divisions chromatic bass line.

1 Planxty Alfred Get ready for Halloween with this charming chromatic jig composed in 1872 Hitchock aka the Level by Charles Gonoud and used as the theme for Alfred Hitchock's television HD F-7 Funeral March of 5 series. You can even use it for contra dances. You will need at least a 16/15 a Marionette with a high G#.

Aubrey will present fingerpicking patterns in ¾ and 4/4 time for song Fingerpicking Level MD F-8 accompaniment as well as technique for fingerpicking the melody as an 2 Patterns and Styles instrumental. Bring fingerpicks or just your fingers!

Chording the Level Aubrey will present pieces in DAD in which we play chords in various MD S-3 Melody 3 positions to express the melody.

What is a jam session and how do we participate? What is the culture or etiquette? Are there different kinds of jams? How do we deal with key Coping in a Jam Level changes? Should we develop a repertoire of common pieces to better speak MD F-6 Session 3 the “language”? Do we play along with melodies or use back up chords? Tuned to D-A-D, we will address these issues and more! Bring a capo and questions that have been stumping you all these years.

We will spend time demystifying ways to work out melodies, harmonies, and Level simple chords to familiar songs in the oral/aural folk tradition, tapping into MD S-6 Playing by Ear 3 what we already know, which is a LOT, as we explore our relationship to music off the written page—exciting and fun!

Participants will learn a variety of chords in DAD and address how to sing Chording and Level MD F-7 and play at the same time! Aubrey will choose from some of her favorite 3 Singing Ballads traditional story songs. The Slap Strum Learn Aubrey's percussive slap strum and other rhythmic tricks and patterns and Other Level MD S-1 5 including additional ways to mute strings, syncopation, and the "air" strum. Percussive The popular, Spanish Lady, will be one of the pieces we play! Techniques Separate your two melody strings--which adds another drone--and create Exploring Four new chord flavors. You can do this with songs you already play! Aubrey will Level MD S-5 discuss getting your feet wet with the four-string configuration and present a Equally-Distant 4 Strings few songs normally tabbed out for three strings as well as a piece or two with strings tuned additional ways.

A delightful repertoire workshop with songs Aubrey has learned through her Songs of Jean Level long contact with Jean Ritchie. We’ll talk a bit about the life and work of Jean MD S-2 Ritchie 2 and address the traditional style of playing with the noter as well as easily playing in different tunings.

Explore an intuitive way of understanding the distinctions among tunings, keys, and modes on the mountain dulcimer. Aubrey will use four songs to Tunings, Keys, and Level MD F-3 illustrate her points, harkening back to Jean Richie’s folk style of playing the 5 Modes dulcimer and address, in a “lay person” way, concepts such as diatonic, chromatic, gapped scales, and solfege.

It is easy to spend a full workshop examining this beautiful traditional song Diving Deep with that has many variants. Deciding key and tuning, chording, fingerpicking Level patterns for 3- or 4-equally distant strings, singing, fingerpicking melody, MD F-2 One Song: The 4 using the dulcimer as a harmony voice, identifying melodic structure, drilling Blackest Crow difficult parts, and discussing the song’s historical back story will all be covered in this exciting session! Learn to use your hands separately to add another layer to your dulcimer Intro to Hand Level HD F-1 arrangements. From adding harmony to playing two melodies at once, hand 3 Independence independence is a great skill to learn no matter your playing level!

We're going to learn how to use hand independence in our solo hammered Advanced Hand Level HD F-4 dulcimer arrangements by looking at a lead sheet and creating an 4 Independence arrangement on the spot!

Learn the basic functions and applications of harmony and how to use it on HD Level F-8 the hammered dulcimer to take your playing to the next level. We'll go over Intro to Harmony 2 S-1 what harmony is, how to find harmony notes, and how to use those notes.

Intro to Level F-6 This class will cover the basic concepts of improvisation in jams and with lead HD Improvisation 3 S-6 sheets, as well as improvisation in your solo arrangements.

Percussion With the hammered dulcimer being a percussion instrument, learning the Level rudiments of the trade can help you with everything from moving around the HD S-8 Rudiments on the 3 instrument, playing smoothly and cleanly, and spicing up your playing in both HD jams and your arrangements.

Hammered Learn the "hammered dulcimer number" system and how you can use it to Level HD F-3 familiarize yourself with the layout of the instrument, simplify song playing Dulcimer by the 2 Numbers and learning, play songs in any key, and much more.

Dulcimer In this class, we’ll look at a bunch of small musical ideas, collectively known Level HD S-3 as Non-Chord Tones(NCT’s), used throughout music that help spice up and Decorations with 3 Non-Chord Tones variate melodies.

Intro to Music Level In this class, we will learn the basics of music theory and how we can HD S-4 Theory 3 visualize and use those concepts on the dulcimer. Tina Bergman

Tuning well is important to not only get your instrument sounding as sweet as Tips and possible, but also to train your ears (and make you more welcome in group Level HD F-1 settings!) You’ll learn proper tuning technique, some suggestions for tuning Techniques for 1 accurate tuning apps and tuners, and techniques to train your ears as a tuning aid that results in faster tuning. Handouts will be provided.

The ability to pick up tunes by ear is not only a great skill, it's a lot of fun! Level HD S-8 We'll discuss and practice techniques to improve your listening abilities and Learning by Ear 2 unlock the mysteries of playing by ear. Handouts will be provided.

No matter how many notes you add, if it’s all loud or all soft it’s not musical. Using pulse to bring Level Use these fundamental techniques to change the way you hear and play HD F-6 life to your playing. 2 music. This workshop also discusses lead patterns, their uses, and how to choose one. Handouts will be provided.

Two beat rhythm We’ll learn some simple two beat rhythm combinations that open up Level opportunities for variation and interest in even the most basic tunes. We’ll be HD S-3 pods for variety and 3 using the tune Liza Jane as a vehicle to explore and experiment. Handouts fun! will be provided.

HD Ergonomics & How your body posture, dulcimer height & angle, and playing technique can affect your endurance, tone and feeling of comfort or fatigue while playing. Rolling well is a technique that can elevate your playing. We'll look at how Level rolls function, when to use them, learn exercises to help us gain facility in HD S-6 Mastering Rolls 4 rolling well and consistently in either hand, and experiment with using rolls in different ways to enhance music making. Handouts will be provided.

We’ll learn this fabulous and wide ranging piece of Swedish Music from 1796. It’s satisfying and fun to play with or without accompaniment, and is a Knuss Olles Level HD S-2 wonderful vehicle to practice dramatic dynamics, rhythmic variation and feel. 5 Lifemusic You will need a high G# (G#5, two octaves above middle C.) Handouts will be provided.

Though O’Carolan wrote over 220 tunes we seem to hear the same handful played over and over. We will learn the lovely, lesser heard tune Carolan’s Level HD F-7 Welcome in an arrangement that can be played solo or with accompaniment. Carolan's Welcome 4 We’ll focus on split hands, open chord voicings, broken chords and flams, with opportunities for dramatic dynamic changes.

There are a few songs that almost every HD Player learns – and Redwing is Level one of them! Upbeat and “physically” fun to play. This arrangement will be HD F-8 Good Ole Redwing! 2 the melody PLUS several embellishments already written in the music/TAB to enhance the flavor!

Have you ever learned a "lick" on the dulcimer and then wondered how to Hammered Hymns Level use it in an arrangement? In this session, we will learn a hymn arrangement HD S-1 II 3 of “In The Garden” that has several types of embellishments within it’s framework to give it beauty and pizzazz!

Although an old time gospel song, it also has the prospect of being a fun jamming tune! Syncopation is the word in this arrangement – and syncopation is a great way to spice up your playing. Along with this Level HD F-4 technique, we will also have some “straight drumming” - chording Meeting In The Air! 3 embellishments and “noodling” (noodling?). (If you watched our set of the first QuaranTune – we performed this song in our segment.) Upper Intermediates might like this as well.

4 Christmas is coming so now is the time to “Get In Gear” before Christmas play dates come. “White Christmas” (Irving Berlin) is a beautiful, cherished Get in Gear for Level HD S-5 song. In this arrangement for the HD you will find arpeggios, doubles, 4 Christmas! chording, triplets and TAB! (Intermediates wanting a little challenge would also benefit from this class.)

What are the thought processes when arranging a hymn, and arranging for Arranging Hymns the HD? In this workshop we'll look at the structure & tools of arranging, and HD All S-6 Plus! put a few into practice. These arranging thoughts/practices can also be used for arrangements of other types of songs as well as hymns.

Chording UP/Down There is no better way to advance your knowledge of the H.D. than learning Level to chord your way around! This is a key aspect to learn future improvisation - HD F-1 and Around on the 3 “in the moment” embellishment and embellishing in general. (Novices could HD also benefit from this class.)

In this workshop, we will take a basic major scale and “embellish” it in several A Scale is A Many different ways. Learning in this method is a tried and true way of learning to Level "fill-in" on your own, so that you are not dependent on other people’s HD F-8 Splendored Thing: 2 arrangements. Starting with simple harmony and progressing through the Part A use of full chords, you will learn a basic understanding of how to accompany melodies.

A Scale is A Many Part B of this class is where it gets really fun! Still using a basic scale, we will Level examine patterns needed in order to play back up to that scale. You will learn HD S-4 Splendored Thing: 2 how to use those embellishment patterns WITH the melody, BEHIND the Part B melody, and in various time signatures.

This class is suitable for both Novice and Intermediate. Easy Back up Chords in a Box- chords for jamming. Very little movement over your dulcimer for those really Level HD F-4 fast jams, or if you are new to jamming. Keeping your chords within a box Keeping up in a 3 Jam you can keep up even when the pace is somewhat beyond your current level of playing, or if you don’t know some of the tunes.

Intermediate and Upper Intermediate Playing back up is important on SO many levels. * Other people playing both hammered dulcimer and other instruments will enjoy jamming with you more if you can let them take the lead while you play Playing Back-up Level HD S-7 back up. 4 101 * If you don’t know the tune, but can listen for the chords, you can play the tune anyway! * Playing back up also strengthens your embellishment skills * Even more!

Learn how to play that really cool rhythm you keep hearing! You’ll learn the rhythm using just harmony notes and also using the full chords. How to use SynCO'paTION' As it, when to use, and why to use it will be explored. Level HD S-2 Applied to Fiddle 3 Tunes Using fiddle tunes that you likely already know; you will learn to replace that standard fiddle tune rhythm with a syncopated rhythm that adds interest to your playing.

Bull at the Wagon, Kitchen Girl, Huntin’ the Buffalo and more as time allows. Favorite “A My favorite fiddle tunes in the key of A. Using simple harmony, chord shapes, and HD F-2 Melody-Four Easy 2 rhythm patterns, you will be well on your way to being able to play more than Methods the melody, EVEN IF IT’S NOT WRITTEN ON THE PAGE! Using these methods, you will be able to create your own arrangements, instead of relying on someone else’s!

The best synonym for is HD, and once your friends and Christmas Music— family find out you play the hammered dulcimer, you WILL be asked to play some Christmas music. BE READY! Cruel War - Tragic A repertoire workshop of tragic ballads from America’s Civil War, including Level MD F-7 “The Cruel War,” “Shiloh Hill,” and others. The tunes are nice additions for the Songs from the 3 Civil War repertoires of Level 4 & 5 players as well. (capo needed)

Level MD S-4 Gettin' Jiggy with It 5 basic dulcimer techniques and strumming rhythms for playing Celtic jigs.

A workshop of fairly simple hymns like “Just As I Am,” “Showers of Blessing,” Hymns for Level MD S-5 and “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” While taught at a very basic level, 1 Beginners the tunes are nice repertoire additions for more advanced players.

Making Takes a simple tune and progressively takes students through several different ways to play that tune - in different octaves and keys, all in the same Arrangements for Level MD S-1 tuning. It also shares some basic ways to make transitions between keys. 4 Intermediate to The purpose is to help students learn skills that will enable them to make Advanced Players their own arrangements of tunes they love to play.

A repertoire workshop of haunting melodies applied to hymns. We’ll be Level focusing on hymn melodies written in minor keys. The tunes are tabbed out in MD F-5 Minor Hymns 3 such a way that most are accessible for Level 2 players, and they also are nice additions for the repertoire of more advance players. (capo needed)

A workshop on playing inverted chords in DAd. The workshop will focus on Playing Upside building proficiency in playing out of inverted chords through skill-building Level exercises and learning songs which emphasize the technique. This is all part MD S-6 Down: Using 4 of developing a comprehensive system for consistent chording. Also Inverted Chords appropriate for level 5 players who want to become more proficient with inversions.

All Celtic tunes are not “fast and furious.” This is a repertoire workshop that Slow Celtic Tunes - proves the point with songs like “Be Thou My Vision,” “Danny Boy,” and “Blue MD Level F-3 Bells of Scotland.” The tunes are tabbed out in such a way that they are 3 S-8 Volume 2 accessible for Level 2 players, and they also are nice additions for the repertoire of more advance players.

A repertoire workshop of very pretty tunes at a comfortable pace even for the Sweet & Gentle Level MD F-3 inexperienced, but beautiful additions even for the advanced player. Tunes 2 Tunes - Volume 2 include “Shenandoah,” “Scarborough Fair,” and others. (capo needed)

A workshop covering the basics of finger-picking on the mountain dulcimer. MD Level F-1 Geared toward novice players, but appropriate for any level player getting Finger Pickin' Good 2 S-2 started with finger-picking.

This workshop, which utilizes a partner arrangement of Canon in D, is the Pachebel wasn’t perfect opportunity for you to utilize and reinforce your study of chord shapes Level F-4 or simply learn a beautiful Baroque period song that has a harmonic MD such a 1-hit wonder 3 S-5 progression found in numerous tunes of today. Participants should be able to perform barre chords efficiently and have a thorough knowledge of chords and chord shapes. DAd tuning; 1+ fret required.

My answer to Larry’s popular self-penned September on the Mississippi! This original chord melody style tune will give you another pretty ballad to “October in the Level add to your repertoire while also giving you a means to review and reinforce MD F-6 Smokies” 3 chord shapes and hone your skills at “maintaining your sustain.” Since it’s unfamiliar, tab reading skills will be challenged, but participants will also receive an audio file of the tune.

A 16th century French hymn tune from our rich Christian heritage with a text appropriate for the Easter season. The tune is tabbed in a straight chordal Liturgical Leanings Level MD F-8 style, but then also arranged as a jig making it acceptable as a solo dulcimer 3 1: "O Filii et Filiae" tune, in or out of a church setting. The session will also cover how to sing the song with a rhythmic accompaniment.

A 16th century French hymn tune originally published in the Genevan Psalter and known by the texts, “Bread of the World in Mercy Broken,” and “Father, Liturgical Leanings Level MD F-2 We Thank Thee Who Hast Planted.” The tune is tabbed in a straight chordal 3 2: "Rendez a Dieu" style, but then also arranged as a jig making it acceptable as a solo dulcimer tune, in or out of a church setting.

An American song of undetermined origin arranged as a duet for “St. James standard and bass dulcimer. The arrangement will require a capo and a 1.5 MD Level S-1 fret, and participants should be familiar with 2 and 3-finger chords. The bass Infirmary:” Duet for 4 S-7 Standard & Bass part utilizes a significant amount of barre chords along with a rhythmic muting technique. Both instruments will be tuned DAd.

Upper Intermediate Skill Level – DAD tuning - 1+ fret required – Spend an hour learning the old blues song, “Hesitation Blues.” The song will make use Level of a shuffling rhythm and use the 1+ fret extensively. Along the way, the art of MD S-6 Hesitation Blues 4 hammer-ons, pull-offs, and muted strings will be addressed to add some zing to the arrangement. Participants will receive the tab along with an audio reference track to use for rehearsal purposes.

Intermediate level - featuring parts for two standard dulcimers. A Bette Midler The Rose - a duet hit from 1979. Licensed for use by the publisher. Features chord-melody style MD Level F-1 parts for both dulcimers. Perfect for fingerstyle or flat-picking. Participants with Elaine & Larry 3 S-2 Conger will receive the tab along with an audio reference track to use for rehearsal purposes.

7 Upper Intermediate Skill Level – DAD tuning - This classic Elvis song is an Plaisir d Amour (I old French melody that was adapted with modern day lyrics. Arranged for Level F-7 mountain dulcimer in DAD tuning, you will need to have a basic knowledge of MD Can't Help Falling 4 S-8 two and three finger chords in order to be comfortable learning this piece. in Love with You) Participants will receive the tab along with an audio reference track to use for rehearsal purposes.

Intermediate Skill Level – DAD tuning - This class will focus on learning the old gospel song “Whispering Hope,” made popular by country singer, Jim Level Reeves. Participants will need a working knowledge of two and three finger MD S-4 Whispering Hope 3 chords in a chord-melody style. Smoothness and efficiency of fingering will be addressed. Participants will receive the tab along with an audio reference track to use for rehearsal purposes.

Intermediate level – DAD tuning. Jigs are surprisingly easy to play on the dulcimer. The challenge is playing them up to speed. This class will explain Level MD F-3 6/8 time, establish a feel for the jig rhythm, then apply that knowledge to a The Art of the Jig 3 couple of fun jig tunes. Participants will receive the tab along with an audio reference track to use for rehearsal purposes.

Advancing Beginner – DAD tuning – This workshop takes the traditional strum and drone style a step farther by introducing the basics of chord- melody style. You will use basic two finger chords along with a combination Level MD F-5 of strums and individually picked notes to create a more contemporary Beyond the Drone 2 sound. Familiar songs will be used to reinforce the concepts. Participants will receive the tab along with an audio reference track to use for rehearsal purposes.

Steve is the founder of the Colorado Dulcimer Orchestra, the conductor of the Berkeley Dulcimer Orchestra and has been developing multi-part arrangements for both kinds of dulcimers to play together in the Dulcimer Orchestra Library over the past decade. This class will introduce the process Arranging for and for arranging for both kinds of dulcimers to play multi-part arrangements together. Students will receive single or two-page multi-part arrangements HD All S-4 Leading Dulcimer- that we will play “together” while listening to an ensemble recording of the focused Ensembles piece while our zoom microphones are muted. (This is the way the Berkeley Dulcimer Orchestra currently rehearses, until we can play again in each other’s company.) Mountain dulcimer players will be playing single-string parts, hammered players need to know the location of the notes on their instruments.

Playing the hammered dulcimer helps us develop a spatial memory, but because we don’t have a physical touch connection as we play, there is a unique set of challenges presented to us when we play and sing at the same Strategies for Level HD F-2 time. Of course with a big hammered dulcimer in the way, it is more difficult to actually sit knee to knee, but playing in each other’s presence and learning the tunes by absorption is the preferred and traditional way of playing. 2016 International Blues Challenge Finalist Bing Futch offers up this fun and Mountain Dulcimer fascinating class on playing authentic Mississippi Delta Blues on the mountain dulcimer. Taking a simple tune in one key and then switching keys somewhere in the Key Changes Made song is a fabulous way of adding depth, complexity and emotion to your Level playing. We’ll look at the so-called “truck-driver modulation” and the “parallel MD S-7 Easy! 5 modulation”, but will focus mainly on the stealthy “pivot chord modulation” for changing keys mid-song. You will need a 1+ fret for this workshop and a capo!

The mountain dulcimer was created as a modal instrument and, in this Seven Modes For workshop, we'll take a grand circle tour through each of them. Learn a few more challenging picking patterns & a few exercises to help your Beyond Basic Level fingers stay ‘limber’, while we practice these patterns on a few tunes and Uke F-7 Finger-Picking 4 chord progressions. You must be able to read uke tablature, and be comfortable changing chords quickly for this workshop.

15 For all levels! Learn as many “pirate” tunes as time allows! Each tune will begin with a “learning flash” - showing you how to play new chords, and Ukulele Pirate strums. Some tunes will also have melody tabbed for more advanced Uke All S-8 "Learning" Jam players. Tunes will be in several different keys; if you aren’t quite ready to play along, I’ll have ways you can still have fun and work on strumming technique.

Intro to Chord/ Chords are one of the main building blocks of music. We'll start with learning Level MD S-1 basic chord formations up and down the fret board, and then show how the Melody Style 2 Playing melody notes tend to "fall out" of the chords.

The art of playing individual strings is a useful technique, both for playing Level melody notes quickly, cleanly, and across the fret board, and also for MD S-6 Intro to Flat-picking 2 providing accompaniment. We will drill the basic technique, and then show how we can apply it to tunes.

Like any other skill, learning how to jam just requires practice. I'll be playing Level through some common jam tunes at a S-L-O-W tempo, and also calling out MD F-6 S-L-O-W Jam 2 the chord changes. You'll even be able to request some of your favorite tunes in the "chat window".

Mt. dulcimer players sometimes get a "bad rap" for only playing in the key of Playing in Other Level MD F-2 D. We'll explore how to play in other keys, and unlock the mysteries of using 3 Keys a capo. D-A-d tuning, capo required.

The mountain dulcimer seems to be especially suited for playing songs of Level faith, such as hymns, gospel tunes, and spirituals. And just like singing in a MD S-8 3-String Choir 3 choir, the sound always seems fuller when we divide up into individual parts. We'll learn a multi-part/ensemble arrangement of one of these tunes.

We'll work on the art of playing a beautiful waltz tune arranged for multi-part/ Waltzing with the Level MD F-7 ensemble playing, demonstrating how the "whole is great than the sum of its 3 MD parts".

The term ‘Tin Pan Alley’ refers to the physical location of the New York City- centered music publishers and who dominated the Music of Tin Pan Level of the United States in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Much of MD S-3 Alley 4 that music has survived in current-day popular culture. It usually requires unusual and interesting chord variations that are especially effective in an ensemble arrangement.

This class will demonstrate how to use some simple but effective chord substitution techniques to "dress up" tunes you've been playing for years. What Are All Those Level MD F-5 We'll learn about 7th chords, related minor chords, and "lifting" chords, 4 Other Chords For? including how to form them on mountain dulcimer, and how and where to use them.

There is something magical about playing in groups - "the whole is greater Creating than the sum of its parts". In this class, we'll learn some techniques for MD Level F-1 creating your own multi-part/ensemble arrangements by adding bass lines, Arrangements for 4 S-7 Groups harmony parts, counter melodies, and more. (This same class will be repeated in 2 different sessions).

"Dulcimer Daze" is a tune written by Gil Anderson, the same composer who also gave "Nut Factory Shuffle" to the dulcimer world. With Gil's kind Level F-3 permission, I'll be presenting a multi-part/ensemble arrangement of this fun MD Dulcimer Daze 3 S-4 and catchy tune. It's also a great tune for learning both major and minor chord shapes up and down the fret board, along with learning to strum syncopated rhythms.

17 This unusual tune in A minor changes meters from the A section, in a lively Jenny Pluck Pears, 6/8, to the B section, in a more measured 3/4. Part of the contemporary Level MD F-8 English Country Dance repertoire, the tune comes from the 18th century or an English Country 5 Dance earlier. With lots of fun and fancy fingering in 6/8, the melody is infectious. DAD tuning, capo required

Known most famously as the theme for Ken Burns’ “Civil War,” this popular folk waltz was written by Jay Ungar in 1984, and named for the Ashokan Level Music & Dance Camp in upstate New York. Written in D (yay!) this MD F-7 Ashokan Farewell 4 arrangement moves fluidly across the strings with a couple of hammers & pulls. You can do a lot to make it yours. Let’s get it under your fingers for the next dance! DAD tuning

Here’s a perennial favorite duet arrangement featuring some ornamentation Level (slides & harmonics), as well as a bass-leading harmony part. Always a MD S-8 Silent Night Duet 2 sweet part of any holiday program and fun to share with a musical partner. Nothing too adventurous, just delicate harmony & rhythm. DAD tuning

An original finger-picked composition, most recently published in Dulcimer Song of the Level Players News. This tune in B minor is full of arpeggios delicately plucked in a MD S-5 Wandering Aengus 4 flowing 3/4 time. If you are new to fingerpicking, we’ll spend a few minutes getting you oriented to the style. DAD tuning

Playing All the Using more than one finger, but often only two, you can take any tune you Level know and add the harmony you are probably hearing in your head. Starting MD S-6 Music: Moving to 3 with a basic chord vocabulary, you’ll learn how harmony is applied to the Chord/Melody tunes you already know. DAD tuning

Starting with “John Brosnan's Polka” I will illustrate how one can play this Irish polka without ever going above the third fret. We will move on to “The A Polka, A Hornpipe Level Sailor’s Hornpipe” this will be challenging but well worth the effort. We will MD F-8 & A Jig 4 then place our capo on the third fret and play the all too happy jig: “Merrily Kiss the Quaker's Wife.” If time allows, I will teach “The Waterloo Hornpipe.” Knowledge embellishments are a must.

Scottish airs and ballads fit wonderfully on the dulcimer. Starting with “Ye Banks & Braes” I will illustrate the Scottish technique of "snaps" with the Scottish Tunes & Level melody. Chords are also provided so we can sing this ballad while strumming MD S-6 Songs for MD 4 the backup chords. I will also teach various chord structures to accompany the three songs. Also included are “Farewell to Tarwaithie,” “Skye Boat Song” and “The Last Time I Came O'er the Moor” if we have time.

I will illustrate the advantage of utilizing a capo to play in Em while tuned D-A- D. Although each arrangement contains hammers and pulls, they can be just strummed until you feel confident enough to employ the embellishments. Four Lively Tunes Level MD S-4 Arrangements include: “Come Life, Shaker Life,” “Rain and Snow,” “Satan 3 with A Capo Your Kingdom Music Come Down,” from Northern France “Breton Tune”. Back up chords are also provided as we will learn some interesting strumming techniques to accompany the songs.

For this workshop the student must be proficient in the three basic embellishments; hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides. All four selections (if we Level have time) are melodies that most of us know or have heard before. MD F-4 Civil War Era Music 3 Selections include: “Battle Cry of Freedom,” “Johnny Has Gone for A Soldier,” “The Girl I left Behind Me,” and “Gary Owen.” I will also instruct the student how to utilize the backup chord to accompany their voice.

All selections are strummed, no hammers or pulls. Two are in D-A-D: From Africa – “Asika Thali” where the melody is almost all on the middle string. From Ireland- Thugamar Féin An Samhradh Linn where Strumming Around Level MD S-3 the melody will be on the treble strings. We will then lower the middle string 3 the World down to a G and play in D-G-D. From Canada- “C’est l’aviron quis nous mène en haut” and from Italy a Renaissance dance tune- “El Tutu.” 18 The first tune “Cuma Eoghain Rua Ui Neill” by O’Carolan will be an example of playing in the key of G while tuned to D-A-D. “The Parting Glass” will be a Three Aires from Level MD F-7 little more difficult but it is a familiar melody. There are a lot of embellishments 3 Ireland in this arrangement, but we will take it nice and slow. We will also learn “The Minstrel Boy” and if time allows, “Paddy’s Green Shamrock Shore.”

We will begin with “Belle qui tiens ma vie” which will require a capo on the 4th fret. This will be a very simple arrangement. We will then employ the chord Early Music for the Level formations written above the staff to sing this beautiful love song. “Minuet” is MD S-7 MD 4 a very familiar tune known mostly as Bach’s Minuet in G. Time allowing, we will explore two Italian Laude: “O divina Virgo, Flore” and “Laude di Maria Maddalenna.”

These are two of my favorite old time American tunes. “Fiddlin’ Bagpipes” is Learning Fiddlin’ played all on one string, however there are essentially four parts to it which Level makes it a lot of fun. We will concentrate on this tune and learn how to MD F-5 Bagpipes & 4 produce harmonics as well as a few other embellishments. “Kingdom Come” Kingdom Come is a wonderful old gospel tune based on the fiddle arrangement of Norman Edmonds of Galax Virginia.

This workshop will focus on using Rudiments in creative ways with chord arpeggios, chord bursts, and rhythmic accompaniment patterns. We will work Advanced Level HD S-3 on exercises to springboard your musical creativity and further develop 5 Rudimental Playing hammer control using time-tested methods from the Percussive Arts Society. Using O’Carolan’s Fanny Power, we techniques for Level will explore the power of some simple ideas such as two note chords to HD F-3 waltzes: “Fanny 2 create bass lines, and introduce three note chords, valley rolls and fills, Power” enough to keep you busy for months!

19 It is never too early to get ready for Christmas! Using It Came Upon a Christmas in Level HD F-7 Midnight Clear, we will apply a variety of arranging ideas, concepts, and 3 August techniques.

Techniques for Using Stephen Foster’s Hard Times, we will incorporate some basic Level arranging techniques including two note chords forming a chromatic bass HD F-2 Arranging: “Hard 3 lines, rolled three note chords, valley rolls, melodic runs, arpeggio fills and Times” chord substitutions.

22 One of the most musically interesting things you can do to advance your playing and understanding of the dulcimer is be able to transfer melodies to Playing Melodies multiple different locations on the fretboard. We’ll start by mapping out a MD Level S-3 couple melodic “zones” on the fretboard. Then we’ll take a simple fiddle tune All Over the 3 S-7 Fretboard on the melody string and translate it to many other locations. We’ll learn a set of two fiddle tunes from the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. Kentucky Fiddle Level These tunes are not often played in mountain dulcimer circles but are really MD S-2 Tunes 4 fun to play and catchy. I wanna show you how to loosen up and liven up your playing. I’m gonna give you the tools to be able to make up interesting and musical things on the fly. Approaches to Level We’ll start with learning two ways I approach improvisation. Then I’ll be MD S-8 Improvisation 5 teaching a simple tune with lots of room to experiment, then using these approaches to improvise within the structure of the tune. The purpose of this workshop is to introduce participants to the thumb lead Autoharp Thumb method for playing faster tunes on the autoharp. Participants will practice Level using an exact striking motion with the thumb and one or two fingers to AH F-7 Lead Melody 3 produce clean melody lines. Left hand technique for quick changes of chord Playing bars will be emphasized. Tight fitting thumb and finger picks are generally used for this style of playing. Keys of D and G.

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the participants to the pinch/ Autoharp Pinch/ pluck method of melody playing on the autoharp. Participants will use Level fingerpicks and thumbpick (or bare fingers and thumb) to play the melody AH F-8 Pluck Melody 3 while incorporating some backup and/or harmony in this pleasing and useful Playing style. With a continually repeating pattern of four notes in a certain easy zig-zag shape, you can turn an arpeggio into amazing improvisations and Zig-Zag Patterns: Level accompaniments! We can apply it to arrangements of classic tunes like 'Star HD S-2 Powerful and Easy! 3 of the County Down', playing chords in an ensemble, or in pure improvisation, and this simple technique actually seems to listeners like virtuoso work! (This is useful to consider at any level from Novice to Advanced.)

As a new player back in the early days of my dulcimer exploration, I started looking for other ways to play the instrument beyond the strumming methods Babysteps to Level MD F-2 I'd been learning. The answer was to put down the pick and start using my 3 Fingerpicking fingers. We'll practice several different methods of fingerpicking, and apply these techniques to songs you already know.

This iconic classical piece composed over 300 years ago has become well Bach's Cello Suite known today, thanks to cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Translating Bach’s music to a 3- Level MD S-5 string diatonic folk instrument has its challenges, but for the advanced player, for Mountain 5 Dulcimer this will be a worthwhile endeavor. We’ll take apart this abridged arrangement, section by section, and put it back together again.

38 Mystified by the fingerstyle approach to playing mountain dulcimer? We’ll break it down into three basic skills: right hand technique (how to produce a F-6 good tone, how to use different fingers to create patterns, how to bring out Fingerpicking Level MD S-1 the melody notes); left hand technique (smooth chord transitions); and how to 2 Training Wheels S-8 decipher fingerstyle tablature. This brief introduction to the “basics” will prepare you to approach simple fingerstyle arrangements with confidence. DAD tuning.

Favorite hymns from early America have simple harmonies and captivating tunes that sound great on mountain dulcimer. We’ll learn hymns from a Folk hymns from Level variety of historical traditions, such as the Sacred Harp (shape note) tradition, MD S-2 America’s Past 3 early American composers, spirituals, and/or Shaker music. We’ll learn a bit about each tradition and will explore ways of playing the tunes that are expressive and that evoke the style of the tradition. Mostly DAD tuning.

“Dulcimer” means “sweet music”. In this workshop, we’ll explore both right- and left-hand techniques that help us achieve a sweet sound in our playing. The Softer Side of We’ll briefly review a gentle finger-picking style that produces a “softer” MD Level F-8 sound. We’ll also look at left-hand approaches for creating a fluid, song-like 3 S-7 Dulcimer quality in our playing. Using a lovely tune or two, we’ll explore how phrasing and dynamics can make our playing both soothing and musically expressive. DAD tuning.

For experienced players who are already comfortable with basic fingerpicking. This workshop will briefly review different approaches to fingerpicking, and then will focus on how to play fingerstyle arrangements Refining Your Level MD S-6 with grace and expression. Topics will include how to emphasize the melody 3 Fingerpicking Skills line and how to achieve a good tone. As time permits, we can troubleshoot common problems and can briefly explore how to convert tab strumming- style tab into fingerstyle arrangements. DAD tuning.

Learn music from Medieval, Renaissance, and possibly Baroque periods. Slow or jolly, this music sounds great on mountain dulcimer. We’ll talk briefly Level MD S-4 about the instruments, sources, and styles of these different periods, then will Early Music for MD 4 enjoy a variety of sacred and secular music of the times, in arrangements for mountain dulcimer.

The beauty of choral music often involves the complex interweaving of “inner Level harmony voices”. We’ll use some advanced arrangements to explore how we MD F-5 Three String Choir 5 can approach our three-stringed dulcimer as a choir of three independent voices, all contributing to the beauty and interest of the music.
