The village Food & Drink has a number of amenities including pubs, restaurants, village store, primary school and village hall. Braithwaite makes an ideal base for exploring and Spoiled for Choice enjoying the area, situated at the start of and the Newlands There is a great selection of Valley, with numerous walks and fells on the doorstep. The neighbouring pubs and hotels nearby for village of Portinscale is set on the shores of Derwentwater and has two marinas an evening meal or drink, for sailing. The A66 offers excellent links to nearby destinations and towns, with the popular lakeside town of Keswick being only two miles away. including the Royal Oak, The Inn or Middle Ruddings Hotels. The dog friendly Chalet in Portinscale Whinlatter is also worth a visit. Bordering the village is Whinlatter forest, with outdoor activities for everyone, including hiking and biking trails, Go Ape and play zones for kids. The visitor centre has a great shop and cafe with balcony - perfect for spotting wildlife while enjoying lunch.

Just a few miles away is Derwentwater – one of the most iconic and picturesque lakes in the 1 Lake District. This scenic lake has marinas for boat lovers and 10 miles of shoreline to relax and watch the world go by. Here are our 4 favorite ways to enjoy this magnificent lake.

1. The shore walk: Make a day of it and enjoy the scenic 9.5 mile walk around the lake shore or walk half way and hop on a lake cruise boat.

2. Island exploration: Hire a rowing boat or motorboat and explore the lake and its four islands. Children will love St Herbert Island, which is also ‘Owl Island’ in Beatrix Potter’s Squirrel Nutkin tale.

3. View from above: If you’re feeling energetic hike 2 up Catbells on the western shore for a fabulous summit view of the lake – don’t forgot your flask and sandwiches! Surprise View at Ashness Bridge also offers a breathtaking view of the lake (no walking involved).

4. and relax.. After a day of walking and sailing enjoy afternoon tea or a traditional Lakeland ale at one of lakeside hotels or cafes. Try Lodore Falls hotel or the new café at the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick.

Getting to Oakvale From J40 on the M6 Motorway, take the sign posted route to Keswick along the A66 for around 18 miles. On reaching the roundabout at Keswick remain on the A66 and continue past the turn for Portinscale and the first turning for Braithwaite. Take the second left hand turn into Braithwaite (opposite Village Hall) and Oakvale will be seen in front of you next to Middle Ruddings Hotel.
