Kundalini The Force for Evolution “The illumination grew brighter and brighter, the roaring louder, I experienced a rocking sensation and then felt myself slipping out of my body, entirely enveloped in a halo of light…I felt the point of consciousness that was myself growing wider, surrounded by waves of light…immersed in a sea of light simultaneously conscious and aware of every point, spread out, as it were, in all directions without any barrier or material obstruction…bathed in light and in a state of exaltation and happiness impossible to describe.” – Gopi Krishna (The evolutionary energy in man) Kundalini is described as a sleeping, dormant potential force that lies coiled at the base of the spine. As vast as the impact of Kundalini in our evolutionary process, is the knowledge and practices that goes with the awakening of this mighty force that often causes more harm than benefit as a result of improper arousal. Yogi Gopi Krishna, in his autobiographical account of the phenomenon of the forceful awakening of Kundalini, states: “The far-reaching effects of this immensely augmented flow of a new form of vital current into the cephalic cavity through the spinal cord before the system becomes fully accustomed to it may be visualized Salon de la Sante, Swami Vivekananda ICC - 29 & 30 June 2013 by considering the effects of a sudden increase in the flow of blood to the brain such as faintness, complete insensibility, excitement, irritability, or in extreme cases, delirium, paralysis, death.” Therefore it is extremely important to understand the nature of Kundalini, and thoroughly learn the authentic yogic practice for the safe awakening of this fierce force. Moreover, contrary to the belief that Kundalini is dormant, it is normally active in most people. As per Grand Master Choa Kok Sui, the Founder of Modern Pranic Healing and Arhatic Yoga, there are seven layers of Kundalini, each having seven sub-layers, totaling forty nine layers in all. So it is not just about the arousal of Kundalini, rather about the number of layers that are aroused. In the case of intelligentsia, the Kundalini is awakened substantially. And the difference between an ordinary person and a yogi lies in the degree or level of awakening of the Kundalini energy. For a great saint whose Kundalini is highly awakened, it is often symbolically represented by a five or seven heads serpent above the head of the Saint, depending on whether the Saint has A Saint with ve layers of five layers awakened or all the seven layers awakened. Kundalini awakened The subject of Kundalini is not limited to Eastern philosophy. In the Holy Bible, there is a mention about this in the Luke 3:16: “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come…He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire – John the Baptist.” By ‘fire’, John the Baptist referred to the Kundalini energy. In the Eastern tradition, this practice of spiritual empowerment is called ‘Shaktipat’. The Kundalini energy plays a vital role in the enhancement of the capacity of our brain to register subtle energies and higher spiritual experiences. Hence it is an essential force for our evolution. However, the success of safely awakening the Kundalini to higher levels depends upon not only the technique or meditation, but more importantly the preparation of the physical body and energy bodies, which include the meridians or energy channels and the Chakras. In fact it is 10% meditation and 90% preparations that go with safe awakening of Kundalini. A practitioner has to be fully aware of the issues associated with the practice of Kundalini meditations. For example, one can experience ‘Kundalini Syndrome’, symptoms of which include overheating, constant fevers, insomnia, hallucinations, obsessive compulsions, uncontrollable sex drive, relationship problems, to name a few. All these problems can be avoided to a large extent with proper practice of meditations under the guidance of a teacher who himself has gone through the entire process of Kundalini awakening to higher levels.     Kundalini Awareness BRAHMA-RANDHRA THE EVOLVING CENTER IN THE BRAIN by Michael Bradford The developing study of the Kundalini phenomenon has brought out many different points of view as to the nature of this mysterious mechanism, its modes of functioning and the way in which it operates in the physical body. Recently, the effort has been directed towards taking the remnants of the ancient knowledge that have come down to us, combining them with information gained from the experiences of people who are currently undergoing Kundalini arousal and integrating this knowledge with the picture of the body/mind complex pre- sented by such modern disciplines as anatomy, physiology and psychology. The purpose of this talk is to present one aspect of the theory of the Kundalini process propounded by Gopi Krishna in which he postulated that a complete understanding of this process can only be had when the acti- vation of the center at the base of the spine is considered in relation to the awakening to activity of an evolving or developing center in the brain. This center in the brain has been referred to in some of the ancient East Indian esoteric treatises on the subject as the Brahma-randhra, or ‘Chamber of Brahma’ and, when fully op- erative, was held by Gopi Krishna to be the source of all the higher mental faculties associated with the en- hancement of consciousness brought about by Kundalini awakening. Many of the current views on Kundalini deal primarily with the psychological aspects surrounding the proc- ess and refer to the rising of the energy up the spine and the opening of the chakras as the basis for the various mental transformations (and problems) that can occur.

The growing number of cases of people who are having what has been termed ‘spiritual crises’ and the many accounts of those who have had similar experiences in the past leave no doubt that we are dealing with a phenomenon which is very real. But the almost total lack of recognition given it by modern medical science has only served to heighten the confusion and fear in the minds of those who are going through these all too real experiences. Since we are dealing here with a subject which is concerned in part with non-physical aspects of creation, such as life-energies and consciousness, the scientific methods that have led to such tremendous progress in the material realm are of only limited use in studying these phenomena. On the other hand, the written ma- terial that has come down to us from the spiritual traditions and Yoga systems of the past, although obviously written by men and women who had a thorough understanding of the effects of Kundalini, was recorded with- out the knowledge we currently have of physiology, biology, neurology, physics, chemistry, etc. It is for this reason that this valuable body of material has been largely dismissed by many modern investigators as the product of primitive superstition.

Spiritualistic Hinduism can take many things from these traditions, but it’s not strictly bound to their rules and regulations. The example of mystical Hinduism can be derived from the Upanishads, which are an amalgamation of philosophy and mysticism, and Yoga Sutras which are the general ethical and spiritual methods to reach to a state of equanimity and bliss. We can see Aurobindo Ghosh attesting Semitic prophets and including them in the broader spectrum of spirituality. We can observe Ramakrishna Paramhamsa worshipping in mosques and churches.

    Near-Death Experiences and Kundalini Awakening: Exploring the Link Yvonne Kason, M.D., C.C.F.P., M.Ed., F.C.F.P. University of Toronto ABSTRACT: This article explores the historical and research evidence that the awakening of latent spiritual energy is the biopsychospiritual basis of near-death experiences (NDEs). This spiritual energy is known in various sacred traditions as Holy Spirit, Vital Winds, chi, dumo fire, mana, and, in the yogic tradition, kundalini. I outline the modern kundalini hypothesis, as first proposed by Gopi Krishna; how this hypothesis can account for the physical symptoms and psychospiritual transformation associated with NDEs; and preliminary evidence from my own NDE and from research underway through the Kundalini Research Network. On March 27, 1979, I had a most extraordinary experience, which prompted me to research spiritual and paranormal states of conscious ness and which has, over the years, led me to the conclusion that kundalini awakening is the mechanism responsible for the phenomena currently known as near-death experiences (NDEs). On that day, I was a young medical doctor, a medical resident, completing my specialty training in family medicine at the University of Toronto. I was as signed that month to work at a remote northern Canadian community, Sioux Lookout, and that day I had been designated by the supervising staff physicians to accompany a critically ill Native Indian woman on a Yvonne Kason, M.D., C.C.F.P., M.Ed., F.C.F.P., is Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, Coordinator of the Kundalini Research Network, and Director of the Spiritual Emergency Research and Referral Clinic in Toronto, where she practices family medicine and medical psychotherapy.
