Kitty said, “We were shocked to hear that MND New Zealand only receives 8 per cent of its funds through government funding!” The two friends put their heads together to brainstorm ideas on how they could help people with MND. Soon, the fantastic idea of holding a Reunion Ball for their university friends was born, with proceeds going to MND New Zealand. On Saturday 31st August, 220 people dressed in their finest outfits gathered at Christchurch’s Show Gate Room at Riccarton Park to catch up for a night of fun and entertainment in support of MND New Zealand. The event was a resounding success, raising a whopping $6,100!     FINAL RESULTS FOR THE 2017 NEW ZEALAND GENERAL ELECTION December 2017 Parliamentary Library Research Paper Final Results after Special Votes The General Election of 23 September 2017 was New Zealand’s 52nd since general elections began in 1853. It was the eighth election conducted under the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system that was used first for the 1996 election. Following the counting of special votes and the release of the official results, there are five political parties and 120 members represented in the 52nd Parliament. This research paper summarizes differences between the preliminary (election night count) and the final election results, compares the 2017 election result with that of 2014, shows trends in voter turnout, and analyses the demographic makeup of the 52nd Parliament. On average there are 37 polling booths per general electorate; the highest number occurs in the Northland electorate (97), while Pakuranga and Kelston have the fewest polling booths (17 each). The largest general electorate, Clutha-Southland has an area of 37,378 sq km and 69 polling booths, or 1 booth per 542 sq km. Mt Albert is the general electorate with the highest density of polling booths – 1 booth per 0.8 sq km. Voting in the 2017 General Election began on 6 September when voters from overseas could download voting papers, vote in person at overseas posts, or vote by post.

    Financial Services Legislation Amendment Bill Government Bill As reported from the Economic Development, Science and Innovation Committee Commentary Recommendation The Economic Development, Science and Innovation Committee has examined the Financial Services Legislation Amendment Bill and recommends that it be passed with the amendments shown. Introduction The bill seeks to establish a new regulatory regime for financial advice and financial advisers in New Zealand, and to amend requirements for registration on the Financial Service Providers Register (the FSPR) to prevent its misuse. The bill is based upon a statutory review of the existing regulatory regime completed in 2016. Part 1 of the bill would amend the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013 (the FMC Act), and Part 2 would amend the Financial Service Providers (Registration and Dis- pute Resolution) Act 2008 (the FSP Act). The bill would also repeal the Financial Advisers Act 2008. The key amendments proposed in the bill include: • removing the requirement that only a natural person can give financial advice, to allow for the provision of online advice (“robo-advice”) • expanding the minimum standards of competence, knowledge, and skill to all categories of people giving financial advice to retail clients • requiring all people who give regulated financial advice to comply with stand- ards of ethical behaviour, conduct, and client care • adding a requirement that anyone who gives financial advice must put the interests of the client first and disclose prescribed information 291—2 2 Financial Services Legislation Amendment Bill Commentary • limiting who can give regulated financial advice • simplifying the regime and its terminology, for example by removing the cat- egories of Authorised Financial Advisers (AFAs), Registered Financial Advis- ers (RFAs) and Qualifying Financial Entities (QFEs) • amending the requirements to be registered on the New Zealand FSPR to pre- vent its misuse.
