ZooKeys 870: 77–100. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.870.35971 Abstract The current paper expands knowledge of two Chinese cave spider species originally described in the genus Maymena Gertsch, 1960: M. paquini Miller, Griswold & Yin, 2009 and M. kehen Miller, Griswold & Yin, 2009. With the exception of these two species, the genus Maymena is endemic to the western hemisphere, and new evidence presented here supports the creation of a new genus for the Chinese species, which we name Yamaneta gen. nov. The male of Y. kehen is described for the first time. Detailed illustrations of the habitus, male palps and epigyne are provided for these two species, as well as descriptions of their webs. -

Volume 45(4):41-50, 2005 THE TYPE SPECIMENS OF FUNGUS GROWING ANTS, ATTINI (HYMENOPTERA, FORMICIDAE, MYRMICINAE) DEPOSITED IN THE MUSEU DE ZOOLOGIA DA UNIVERSIDADE DE SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL CHRISTIANA KLINGENBERG1,2 CARLOS ROBERTO F. B RANDÃO1 ABSTRACT We present here a list of the Attini type material deposited in the Formicidae collection of the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZSP), Brazil. In total, the Attini (fungus-growing and leaf- cutting ants) collection includes types of 105 nominal species, of which 74 are still valid, whereas 31 are considered synonyms. The majority of the types in the MZSP collection are syntypes (74), but in the collection there are 4 species represented only by holotypes, 12 by holotypes and paratypes, 13 species only by paratypes, and 2 species by the lectotype and one paralectotype as well. All holotypes and paratypes refer to valid species. The aim of this type list is to facilitate consultation and to encourage further revisionary studies of the Attini genera. Three new species: Anapistula choojaiae sp. nov., Crassignatha seeliam sp. nov., and Crassignatha seedam sp. nov. are described and illustrated. Distribution is expanded and additional morphological data are reported for Patu shiluensis Lin & Li, 2009. Specimens were collected in Thailand between July and August 2018. The newly described species were found in the north mountainous region of Chiang Mai, and Patu shiluensis was collected in the coastal region of Phuket. -

Fisher Department of Entomology California Academy of Sciences 875 Howard Street San Francisco, California 94103 USA [email protected] ABSTRACT The worker and queen of Probolomyrmex tani (sp. nov.) from Madagascar are described. This is the first record of the genus from the Malagasy region. P. tani is widespread throughout western Madagascar but rare in collections. Collection data indicate that this species nests and forages in soil or litter in a range of habitats from montane forest to dry spiny bush. P. tani is most similar in size and general shape to P. guineensis found in western and central Africa. Fisher: Probolomyrmex of Madagascar 147 INTRODUCTION Probolomyrmex was revised globally by Taylor (1965). Additional species were subsequently described from the Neotropics (Agosti, 1994; O’Keefe & Agosti, 1997) and the Oriental region (Tanaka, 1974; Brown, 1975; Terayama & Ogata, 1988). This paper describes a new species and the first record of the genus from the island of Madagascar. The genus Probolomyrmex was placed in the subfamily Proceratiinae by Bolton (2003). This placement has been confirmed by molecular work (Ouellette et al., 2006). As in other regions, Probolomyrmex in Madagascar is cryptic and rarely collected using the traditional arsenal of ant collecting methods (sifted litter, hand collecting, pitfall, Malaise, light trap, and beating low vegetation). -

Here, we compared a primary and a secondary forest each on two continents using four different sampling methods. Winkler sampling, pitfalls, and four types of above- and below-ground baits (dead, crushed insects; melezitose; living termites; living mealworms/grasshoppers) were applied on four plots (4 × 4 grid points) on each site. Although less diverse than Winkler samples and pitfalls, subterranean baits provided a remarkable ant community. Our baiting system provided a large dataset to systematically quantify strata and dietary specialisation in tropical rainforest ants. Compared to above-ground baits, 10–28% of the species at subterranean baits were overall more common (or unique to) below ground, indicating a fauna that was truly specialised to this stratum. Species turnover was particularly high in the primary forests, both concerning above-ground and subterranean baits and between grid points within a site. This suggests that secondary forests are more impoverished, especially concerning their subterranean fauna. Although subterranean ants rarely displayed specific preferences for a bait type, they were in general more specialised than above-ground ants; this was true for entire communities, but also for the same species if they foraged in both strata. LeBoeuf Abstract Trophallaxis is a complex social fluid exchange emblematic of social insects and of ants in particular. Trophallaxis behaviors are present in approximately half of all ant genera, distributed over 11 subfamilies. Across biological life, intra- and inter-species exchanged fluids tend to occur in only the most fitness-relevant behavioral contexts, typically transmitting endogenously produced molecules adapted to exert influence on the receiver’s physiology or behavior. Despite this, many aspects of trophallaxis remain poorly understood, such as the prevalence of the different forms of trophallaxis, the components transmitted, their roles in colony physiology and how these behaviors have evolved. With this review, we define the forms of trophallaxis observed in ants and bring together current knowledge on the mechanics of trophallaxis, the contents of the fluids transmitted, the contexts in which trophallaxis occurs and the roles these behaviors play in colony life. We identify six contexts where trophallaxis occurs: nourishment, short- and long-term decision making, immune defense, social maintenance, aggression, and inoculation and maintenance of the gut microbiota. Though many ideas have been put forth on the evolution of trophallaxis, our analyses support the idea that stomodeal trophallaxis has become a fixed aspect of colony life primarily in species that drink liquid food and, further, that the adoption of this behavior was key for some lineages in establishing ecological dominance. -

We report the discovery of Erenlagus anielae, a new genus and species of stem lagomorph from the lower part of the Middle Eocene Irdin Manha Formation at the Huhe- boerhe locality, Erlian Basin, Nei Mongol, China. The remains consist of isolated teeth; however, the material includes all loci except the incisors and P2. The new lagomorph is characterized by a small size and high degree of unilateral hypsodonty comparable to that of Aktashmys and slightly higher than that observed in the coeval and co-occurring Stre- nulagus. Further, it shows advanced root fusion, which exceeds even that in Gobiolagus. Although phylogenetic relationships of the Eocene lagomorphs from Asia are still not fully resolved, the dental characters of Erenlagus anielae suggest that it is most closely re- lated to Lushilagus danjingensis from the Middle Eocene of Henan, China and Ak- tashmys montealbus from the late Early Eocene of Kyrgyzstan. This stratigraphically well-constrained finding represents one of the lagomorph genera that appeared in the Eo- cene Glires paleobiodiversity reservoir, the Erlian Basin in Nei Mongol. -

Madl* Abstract The ant collection of the Natural History Museum Vienna (Austria) contains syntypes of nine species described from Eritrea: Aphaenogaster clavata EMERY, 1877 (= Pheidole clavata (EMERY, 1877)), Cam- ponotus carbo EMERY, 1877, Melissotarsus beccarii EMERY, 1877, Monomorium bicolor EMERY, 1877, Pheidole rugaticeps EMERY, 1877, Pheidole speculifera EMERY, 1877, Polyrhachis antinorii EMERY, 1877 (= Polyrhachis viscosa SMITH, 1858) and Tetramorium doriae EMERY, 1881. All syntypes were collected in Eritrea except the syntype of Monomorium luteum EMERY, 1881, which was collected in Yemen. A prelimi- nary checklist of the ants of Eritrea comprises 114 species and subspecies of seven subfamilies.
