TOP JOCKEY MURPHY IN BADEN-BADEN RAID

Just five weeks after winning the Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr Preis at Munich with Benbatl, OISIN MURPHY heads back to Germany for four rides on the final day of this year’s ‘Grosse Woche’ festival at Baden-Baden on Sunday.

All of the Irish-born but English-based jockey’s rides come courtesy of Munich-based trainer Sarah Steinberg, whose 23% strike rate in Germany shows how well her stable are performing this season.

First up for Murphy is the six year old entire EDINGTON in the Preis des Kurhaus Baden- Baden class 1 handicap. Edington will be racing in Germany for the first time in over 2 years, having raced mainly in France since then, having finished fourth to English raider Saunter (winner since) at Compiegne last time out. With both his wins having come on soft ground, Edington looks sure to appreciate the recent race that has fallen on the course.

QUEST THE MOON is next up for the jockey in the Group 3 Wackenhut Mercedes-Benz Preis. This 55,000 Euro contest for 2 year olds looks to be a very decent race, and although Quest the Moon made a fine debut when second at Munich on his only run to date, the Sea the Moon colt faces a stiff task here, with trainer Markus Klug saddling the unbeaten trio MAN ON THE MOON, PEACE OF PARIS and SHAROKA, whilst recent winners I’LL HAVE ANOTHER and KILBARCHAN make the journey from the English stables of record breaking handler Mark Johnston.

The big race of the meeting is the Group 1 Longines Grosser Preis von Baden, which sees Murphy take the ride aboard NIGHT MUSIC, winner of her last five races, including the Group 2 Gran Premio di Milano last time out. However, the Sea the Stars mare, whose half-sister Night Magic won this very race back in 2010, faces a step up in class here, especially with high-class British raiders BEST SOLUTION and also in the line-up.

Murphy’s final ride comes courtesy of the former -trained CLEARLY in the Listed Berenberg Cup. Having found Group 1 company too hot last time, the Invincible Spirit filly should

find this race more to her liking.

DEFOE SET TO SCORE IN GROSSER PREIS

Regarded as the most prestigious race in Germany, Sunday’s Longines Grosser Preis von Baden at Baden-Baden has attracted a high class field of eight runners, with two top English raiders adding to the occasion.

BEST SOLUTION, representing the powerful operation led by Sheikh Mohammed, was only fifth in this race last year, but has gone from strength to strength since, landing the Longines Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten last time out. On that occasion, Best Solution had four of Sunday’s runners, DSCHINGIS SECRET,

KHAN, WINDSTOSS and RAPIDO, back in fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh respectively. However, it can be argued that the Markus Klug-trained pair of Dschingis Secret and Windstoss ran below par that day, and both may get closer to Best Solution here.

Course specialist IQUITOS won this race in 2016 before finishing second in last year’s renewal. The six year old, who has been an outstanding servant to his veteran trainer Hans -Jürgen Gröschel, landed a Group 2 contest at Baden-Baden in May, was slightly disappointing when only fourth at Munich last time, but with form figures at Baden- Baden of 111221, Iquitos merits consideration here.

Wh ilst RAPIDO has been well beaten in all his four races this season, NIGHT MUSIC, trained in Munich by Sarah Steinberg, has won her last five contests, including the Group 2 Gran Premio di Milano last time out. However, the Sea the Stars mare, whose half-sister Night Magic won this very race back in 2010, faces a step up in class here.

The field is completed by the second British raider DEFOE. Trained by Roger Varian, Defoe rattled up an impressing four-timer last year, making the transition from handicapper to Group horse in fine style. Having possibly not stayed the near 3000 metre distance of the English St. Leger at Doncaster last September, Defoe started this season winning two Group contests over Sunday’s race distance of 2400 metres. Third over shorter in a Group 1 race at The Curragh last time out, Defoe, who will be ridden by regular jockey Andrea Atzeni, will appreciate the recent rain at Baden-Baden, and is tipped to be the first British-trained winner of the race since back 2005. Interestingly Warrsan was trained by Clive Brittain at Carlburg Stable in Newmarket, the very same stable that Varian now trains from.

PREDICTION: DEFOE - BEST SOLUTION - IQUITOS - DSCHINGIS SECRET - WINDSTOSS

MINISTER TIPPED FOR FINAL SEEJAGDRENNEN

Sunday sees the final Seejagdrennen lake steeplechase of the season in Germany when seven runners line up for the Preis der Firma JCK Holding Seejagdrennen at Quakenbrück.

Four on the five runners in last year’s race line up again here. On that occasion, the Christian von der Recke-trained INTERIOR MINISTER, inspired by an outstanding ride from jockey Sonja Daroszewski, took the honours, with WUTZELMANN third and ROSENKOENIG pulled up. However, GOOD PRINCE, who like Wutzelmann and Rosenkoenig lines up again this year, crossed the line second before being disqualified after taking the wrong course close home and going the wrong side of the final bend markers. Having won the two Seejagdrennen races at Bad Harzburg last month between them, Good Prince and Wutzelmann arrive here in fine form, however, having won the only Pattern hurdle in Germany last month, Interior Minister is tipped to repeat last year’s victory.

As well as Interior Minister, trainer Christian von der Recke also saddles DAULYS

ANTHEM, second and third in the two aforementioned Seejagdrennen races at Bad Harzburg last month, and who parted company with his jockey on the flat at Waregem in Belgium on Tuesday.

The field is completed by ALLEZ Y, first and second on his two hurdle runs so far but ho makes his chase debut here and might lack the experience for this, and ICARIUM, who burst onto the German jumps in June when finishing second in the Hamburg Seejagdrennen. Having previously had only a handful of jumps races in Italy, Icarium was giving two kilos to the winner Peintre Elusif, and going down by only ¾ of a length, gave an indication that he could be a very useful recruit to the German jumps scene.

The mount on Sunday of Irish jockey Mark Quinlan, Icarium has a big chance here if repeating his Hamburg form.

PREDICTION: INTERIOR MINISTER

- ICARIUM - WUTZELMANN - DAULYS ANTHEM - GOOD PRINCE

NORWAY: ENGLISH RAIDER IN SHOCK POLAR CUP VICTORY

The 38-1 shot HAKAM was a surprise winner of the Group 3 Polar Cup at the Ovrevoll course in Norway on Sunday.

Having feared no better than fourth in five runs in English handicap races this season, the Michael Appleby-trained Hakam showed much improved form in the 600,000 NOK (approx 62,000 EUR) contest staying on well under jockey Luke Morris to defeat Viscount Barfield, formerly trained in England by Andrew Balding but now with Norwegian handler Niels Petersen, by a length, with Swedish challenger Seaside Song back in third.

BELGIUM: FOUR FOR TAUPIN AS TETT TAKES HURDLE

TAUPIN ROCHELAIS wrote himself into the record books when becoming the first horse since the nineteenth century to win the Belgian Grand National, the ING Grand Steeplechase des Flandres, four times when landing this year’s renewal of the famous race at Waregem on Tuesday.

Despite having won the last three renewals of the race, Taupin Rochelais was sent off second favourite for the 100,000 Euro contest, with the Guillaume Macaire-trained Defi d’Estruval narrowly edging Taupin Rochelais in the betting market. However, under regular jockey Thomas Beaurain, Taupin Rochelais saw off his chief market rival is a terrific finish, prevailing by ¾ of a length, with 67-1 shot Votre Plaisir well back in third.

The race also saw a record consecutive eighth victory for trainer Patrice Quinton. Before Taupin Rochelais’ winning streak, the Frenchman had won the race twice with both Royal Fou and Martalin.

Aside from the big race itself, there was success for English amateur jockey FREDDIE TETT in the Prix Felix de Ruyck, a hurdle race worth 34,000 Euros. Part of the amalgamated Fegentri/Gentlemens League series for amateur jump jockeys, the race, which is a hurdle in name only as the obstacles are bigger that most fences seen at other courses, saw Tett ride the Pierre Fertillet-trained CROSS WAY to victory. Having led for most of the way in the 3600 metre contest before dropping back behind the leaders, the pair regained the lead after the final hurdle, overhauling French jockey Maxime Denuault aboard Vaheoz, with Scottish jockey Tom Hamilton third aboard Cajarian.
