Melillo, Director Michael O'Rand, General Manager Julia Gillett, Director ofProduction / 18 PINA BAUSCH was born in Solingen, Germany in 1940. At the age of fifteen she began her studies at the Folkwang School under the direction of Kurt 100ss. She finished her studies there in 1959, and received a special scholarship to come to the United States. In New York she was a special student at the luilliard School, and a member of the Dance Company of Paul Sansardo and Danya Feuer. She worked with the New American Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. In 1962 she return ed to Germany as a soloist with the newly-formed Folkwang Ballet, where she began to choreograph in 1968 and in 1969 became director. In 1m she was invited to stage the bacchanal in a Wuppertal production of Wagner's Tannhdllser, and her innovative choreography won her the position of ballet director in Wuppertal in 1973. She has remained in Wuppertal since 1973. where she has created over 20 pieces. The Tanztheater Wuppertal has toured extensively internation ally, and made its United States debut in 1984 at the Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles and the Brooklyn Academy of Mu'sic.

He remained with the Boston Symphony until 1974, concurrently holding the title of music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic from 1971 to 1979. For six seasons, from 1971 to 1977, he directed the nationally televised Young People's Concerts of the New York Philharmonic, displaying what his predeces sor, Leonard Bernstein has called "a blinding but lovable brilliance." He served as a prin cipal guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1981 to 1985. .
