Amy Winehouse – The Singer’s Camden Connection

Amy Winehouse, the singer songwriter, is well known as the Queen of Camden.

Born 14 September 1983, Amy Winehouse came from a musical family; many of her uncles being professional jazz musicians. She bought her own guitar when she was 14 and began writing songs and singing. When she was 17 she became a featured vocalist with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Her debut album Frank was released in 2003 and the follow up Back to Black in 2006 became the bestselling album in the UK. She won five Grammy awards for this album.

Amy called Camden her playground, a place she lived in, worked in and played in. She resided in Camden for many years, and was living in a flat in Prowse Place when she became an international success. Her favourite in Camden was The Hawley Arms and it was sometimes referred to as the Amy Winehouse pub as often she would get behind the bar and serve drinks. Other she frequented were The Good Mixer on Inverness St and she played many of her first gigs at The Dublin Castle on Parkway. Other music venues she sang in were the former Camden Palace and the Roundhouse where she played her last gig on 20 July 2011, just three days before she died.

Amy died alone in her home, 30 Camden Square on 23 July 2011, age 27, of accidental alcohol poisoning. The news shocked the world. Fans flocked to her house to pay tribute and leave flowers outside. Camden Council has replaced the Camden Square street sign many times which has been repeatedly covered in graffiti, and some stolen by fans. A year after her death her house, which had remained unoccupied, was sold at auction for £1.98m. 1

The Amy Winehouse Foundation was set up by her family to support and help young people with addiction and emotional problems. Camden continues to honour one of its most famous residents. A bronze life size of Amy by British sculptor Scott Eaton was placed in Stables Market, in 2014. The Jewish Museum in Camden has shown many exhibitions based on Amy, her family and heritage. It also launched an Amy street art trail of all the murals depicting her around the town. Last year, 2020, Amy was honoured on Camden’s Music Walk of Fame, when a plaque bearing her name was unveiled.

COVID-19 Community Response Team Survey

As many of you are aware the voluntary sector has been working hard in partnership with the Council to provide support to Camden residents who are vulnerable and need support around food provision. As this work has been developing we are keen to expand the offer to residents in a coordinated way and so are asking organisations who are providing COVID support to residents during the pandemic, whether it be food support, mental health support, debt advice and so on, to please fill in the survey using the link below and submit to Camden Council. The survey should not take more than 5-10 minutes and will be able to help us to plan and promote support to residents in the forthcoming months. Please complete and return the survey by Wednesday 3 February 2021.
