Feldman Submitted to the Department of Urban Studies and Planning on May, 16 2002 in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master in City Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology To date, the reuse of abandoned railroad rights-of-way has occurred primarily in suburban and rural areas. However, a new generation of urban rail corridor conversions appears to be underway. More urban in more places than prior rail-to-trail projects, the next generation of rail corridor conversions reflects a broader and more complex notion of rail-to-trail projects. These urban projects are more likely to begin with goals and assumptions that look beyond the traditional emphasis on recreation and commuting. They also tend to be more sensitive to changing contexts along a single right-of-way, can serve as focal points or catalysts for other development efforts and involve a wide range of actors and funding sources. -

The students, from six school districts dispersed from New Britain to the greater Hartford area are enrolled in the Metacomet Ridge Interdistrict Academy (MRIA). The MRIA program is funded through the State Department of Education Interdistrict Cooperative Grant and managed by CREC (Capital Region Education Council), have the task of studying the environment of the Metacomet Ridge, a rocky ridge that rises above the Connecticut Valley and stretches from Long Island Sound to far above the Massachusetts/Connecticut border. According to Dr. Nalini Munshi, lead teacher at Roosevelt Middle School’s S.T.E.M Academy, the students conducted a land cover testing that includes a site of 30 by 30 meters square squares at the bottom of Talcott Mountain State Park. The students with assistance from NBHS Teachers Joe Bosco, III and Robert Ramsey feed their data into an international website for scientists known as the Globe network, where in Scientists can access it and use it for their own research. The work that the students do is considered real time science. Referring to the land cover testing, Dr. Munshi said, “we calculate the canopy cover and ground cover and measure the height of the dominant and co dominant tree species. -

THE discovery of the Connecticut river has been generally attributed hy histoi'ians to Adriaen Block. If Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524 or Estovan Gomez in 1525 sailed by its mouth, we have no record of the fact ; and it is very doubtful whether a river, whose semicircle of sand bars must have proclaimed it such, would have attracted much attention from any navigator seeking a northwest passage. In 1614, Block, having completed his yacht the Onrust [Restless], set sail from Manhattan to explore the bays and rivers to the. eastward. His vessel was well adapted to his purpose, being of sixteen tons burden, forty-four and a half feet long and eleven and a half feefc wide. He was able thus to obtain a more exact knowledge of the coast, as may be seen by the "Figurative Map," which is sup- posed to exhibit the results of his explorations.^ At the mouth of the Connecticut river he found the water quite shallow, but the draught of his yacht enabled him to cross the bar Avithout danger and the white man was soon for the first time folloAving northward the course of New Eng- land's longest river. There were few inhabitants to be seen near the mouth, but at a point which is thought to have been just above the bend near Middletown, he came upon the lodges of. the Sequins, located on both banks of thé river. Still farther up he saw an Indian village "resembling a fort for protection against the attacks of their enemies." O’Donovan, Division Director OFFICIAL LIST OF PUBLIC WATERS Published Pursuant to RSA 271:20 II (effective June 26, 1990) IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not use this list for determining water bodies that are subject to the Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act (CSPA). The CSPA list is available on the NHDES website. Public waters in New Hampshire are prescribed by common law as great ponds (natural waterbodies of 10 acres or more in size), public rivers and streams, and tidal waters. These common law public waters are held by the State in trust for the people of New Hampshire. The State holds the land underlying great ponds and tidal waters (including tidal rivers) in trust for the people of New Hampshire. Generally, but with some exceptions, private property owners hold title to the land underlying freshwater rivers and streams, and the State has an easement over this land for public purposes. Several New Hampshire statutes further define public waters as including artificial impoundments 10 acres or more in size, solely for the purpose of applying specific statutes. Most artificial impoundments were created by the construction of a dam, but some were created by actions such as dredging or as a result of urbanization (usually due to the effect of road crossings obstructing flow and increased runoff from the surrounding area). -

Harper, Ph.D. February 6, 2014 Revised March 20, 2015 ABSTRACT The Town of Bloomfield, Connecticut, is planning construction of Section 1 of the Bloomfield Greenway Multi-Use Trail. The trail runs from Station 100+00 (Tunxis Avenue, Route 189/187) at the north to Station 186+00 (Tunxis Avenue, Route 189/187) at the south (Figure 1). Most of the Base Phase, which measures 8,285 feet (2,524 meters) in length, will follow the former Connecticut Western/Central New England Rail Line. The trail is planned to be approximately 11 feet wide. A 50-foot-long prefabricated bridge will span Griffin Brook, at the location of a former railroad bridge which is no longer extant. The Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT), Office of Environmental Planning (OEP), reviewed the proposed project and noted that the project area, or Area of Potential Effect (APE), possesses pre-colonial Native American archaeological sensitivity, and contains rail-related historic resources that are potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. ConnDOT recommended that a Phase IB subsurface reconnaissance survey be conducted along portions of the proposed trail under current design that are archaeologically sensitive. ConnDOT further recommended that the eligibility of historic-rail-related features for listing in the National Register of Historic Places be assessed. -

For the last 7 years his photography work has been almost entirely outdoors. Special interests include unique lighting conditions, water subjects such as reflections and captured motion, sunrises, and a variety of critters from heron to spiders.
