Others will also rise or set at night, but instead of disappearing from view altogether, they will lose touch with the horizon and spend the whole night being visible in the starry sky. Yet both these sorts of stars will eventually return to rising or setting during the night, with each individual star doing so on a particular date of the year. However, there is also another set of stars that do not partake of this dance and are always visible, and never sink beneath the horizon, spending every night circling around the pole. -

III. 9 THE HELIACAL RISING OF SIRIUS Teije de Jong The heliacal rising of Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, was used in antiquity, both in Egypt and in Mesopotamia, to synchronize the cal- endar to the solar year. On the day of its heliacal rising Sirius is seen again for the first time in the morning twilight sky after having been invisible for about 70 days (at the geographical latitude of Memphis). On that day it appears a few degrees above the Eastern horizon and disappears again after about 15 minutes due to the brightening of the sky just before sunrise. The date of heliacal rising depends on the rel- ative positions of Sirius and the Sun with respect to the horizon and on atmospheric conditions. According to Parker in the ancient Egyptian lunar calendar an addi- tional 13th month was intercalated in the next year whenever the first visibility of Sirius (associated with the Goddess Sothis) occurred during the last 11 days of the last month Wep renpet of the lunar year.1 In this way the Egyptians could make sure that the first month Toth of their lunar calendar always began shortly (within one lunar month) after the first visibility of Sirius. The heliacal rising of Sirius plays a crucial role in Egyptian chronology because it is supposed to fix the zero-point of the Egyptian civil calendar of 365 days by postulating that at the time of its installation the first visibility of Sirius occurred on the first day of the first month. One of the earliest references to the use of Sirius for intercalation in the Mesopotamian lunar calendar is found on Tablet II of MUL.APIN where we are told that if Sirius rises in the month Du"uzu (the 4th month) this year is normal but if it rises in the month Abu (the 5th) an extra month has to be intercalated that year.2 On Tablet I the nom- inal date of the first visibility of Sirius in the lunar calendar is given 1 R. -

To start off, the first part of 2019 brought in a radical new era in astronomy with the first ever image showing a shadow of a black hole. For CAPjournal #26, part of the team who collaborated on the promotion of this image hs written a piece to show what it took to produce one of the largest astronomy outreach campaigns to date. We also highlight two other large outreach campaigns in this edition. The first is a peer-reviewed article about the 2016 solar eclipse in Indonesia from the founder of the astronomy website lagiselatan, Avivah Yamani. (9/1958) [HELIACAL PHENOMENA] Babylonian Accuracy If reference is made to the Egyptian Sothic Calendar for 2767 B.C, it will be found that the Greek name for the first month of the season Shemu was Kaphon (Copic=Pachons). This was because the festival of Pa Chons or Chronsu ("The New Moon") was celebrated during this month, which tallied with the Julian year commencing March 13th. Pa Chons was the god of the New Moon and in the monuments he was represented as either a falcon-headed man wearing the solar disc and lunar crescent on his head, or as a naked boy similarly crowned. This seems to prove convincingly that the Egyptians celebrated the Neomenia or 1st New Moon of the lunar year, which tallied with the Babylonian 1st Nisan, long before the institution of their calendar of 360 days, plus 5 epagomenal days, especially as their ideogram for a month was a representation of a crescent moon! 1 | FAGAN -- HELIACAL Many hundreds of Babylonian cuneiform tablets of baked clay have been excavated, which gave the dates of the first appearance of the lunar crescent. -

As Professor Otto Neugebauer (1899-1990) wrote in his great work A History of Ancient Mathematical Astronomy : "The natural reference system for the motion of the planets, moon and sun, are the fixed stars..." Once having grasped - through the application of "as above, so below" - that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the celestial sphere and the terrrestrial sphere, such that each place on the Earth corresponds to a star in the heavens, there is no other possibility for understanding the zodiac than in terms of the stars making up the signs of the zodiac. By way of illustration, returning again to the correspondence between Vienna and Aldebaran, there was a time when Vienna, under the Hapsburg dynasty, was the center of Europe. This perfectly mirrored the central position of Aldebaran in Taurus. As shown in Robert Powell's Ph.D. thesis, published in book form under the title History of the Zodiac , the original definition of the zodiac made by the Babylonians early in the fifth century BC was specified by the two first magnitude stars Aldebaran at the center of Taurus and Antares in the middle of Scorpio such that the zodiacal locations of Aldebaran and Antares were defined to be 15 degrees Taurus and 15 degrees Scorpio. Once this central axis running through the middle of the signs of Taurus and Scorpio was defined by these two stars, the longitudes in the 30 degree divisions known as signs of other bright stars in the twelve zodiacal constellations could be ascertained. -

Essential Dignity Essential dignity is a way of evaluating the innate level of development or refinement of each planet in the chart. Planets that have a lot of essential dignity are generally stronger, show more positive effects, are better integrated into the personality, and function more freely in their domains. Some modern astrologers give little credence to the rulerships, just as they fail to regard any planet as innately malefic or benefic. In surveying the history of astrology, this is evidently a great error. The rulerships are a seminal principle in astrology, and one on which a large proportion of interpretive work was based for thousands of years before the common era. Sign Rulerships The first consideration in assessing the essential dignity of a planet is to observe whether it is in a sign that it rules. Each planet rules two signs, except the sun and moon, which rule only one each. When planets are in the signs they rule, the expression of their energy is easy and has relatively free reign. You should imagine that the planets are literal rulers of their respective signs, which constitute their kingdoms. Rulers within their own kingdoms have the benefit of their own resources to execute their desires, provide for their protection, and distribute to other regions. Rulers in foreign lands are necessarily more vulnerable and subject to interference. This will become an important operative principle when we discuss dispositorship below. Planetary rulership of the signs falls within a pattern that is often little appreciated by modern astrologers. Highlight events in Astronomy 2017 A brief look at the year ahead Vancouver, BC, January 1, 2017 – Conjunction of Mars, Venus, Moon: Jan 31st A conjunction marks one of the perfect viewing opportunities for people. A conjunction is when two or more objects appear close to each other in the night sky. On the 31st of January, Mars, Venus, and the moon will all be in the western sky, setting together. Watch for this spectacular and rare event right after sunset between the 29th and the 2nd, with the best opportunity on the 31st of January. You do not even need a telescope! Juno continues mission around Jupiter Juno arrived at Jupiter earlier in July of 2016, marking a historic feat in space exploration. Having a few minor hiccups in some of the tech on the craft, it has been working fantastically and has already helped us understand the largest planet in our solar system more. The mission continues and more and more data comes pouring in every day. The data has already surprised astronomers, and there is so much to still learn from this mission. Some of our major understandings of Jupiter are being altered because of the data from this mission. Lightsail 2 launches: March The Planetary Society has been pioneering a new way of space flight: riding along the waves of space using the Sun's energy as power. The Lightsail project is aiming to send their second prototype into space for deployment. Just like a sailboat, the Lightsail is pushed along by having a massive collection area where the light from the Sun pushes against the craft, slowly accelerating it.
