The Fellowship Center was completed in 2011 and hosts worship and gatherings for the community. St. Mark’s is part of the Diocese of Maryland, a member of the Episcopal Church and the world- wide Anglican Communion—those Churches born out of the Church of England. We hope that you will feel at home in this place and in this liturgy. Ushers are available during the liturgy as well as greeters and clergy following, should you have any questions or concerns. Some attend Morning and Evening Prayer in their parishes on Sundays, where these services are the weekly gatherings of the Christian community, often in the absence of a priest. Others – not just the ordained – pray Morning and Evening Prayer daily throughout the year alone, often silently. Corporate daily Morning (and Evening) Prayer, is often limited to Anglican monastic communities, cathedrals, some parish churches, and theological colleges. Daily liturgical prayer, that is, the Divine Office, is a venerable tradition in colleges and universities in the Anglican Communion, and is celebrated as an integral element of the Anglican Studies Program at Saint Paul University. Since the style of our celebration of the Divine Office is that of neither private recitation nor of parish Sunday Morning Prayer, these directions are offered to enable you to lead our particular community in its worship with ease, and a sense of the spirit of corporate liturgical prayer in the Anglican tradition. Introduction The rhythm of daily prayer in the life of a worshipping community is not unlike breathing: regularity is essential. It is a matter of practice, though in this case practice is not the same as rehearsal. Rather, practice is the regular and disciplined engagement in particular actions intended to have a formative effect on the practitioner. The regular practice of seeking the presence of God, of praising, thanking and beseeching God, cultivates a habit of mind and action that is sensitive to the divine outside of explicitly religious activities.

Instead, it indicates which options a particular community uses among those available in the prayer book, provides direction for adapting the liturgy to a specific liturgical space, and fills in some of the silences in the prayer book’s rubrics. This Customary should therefore be read alongside the prayer book. The answer to many questions about worship can often be found by starting first with the prayer book and then turning to the Customary. The Daily Office Morning Prayer -Personnel are vested in cassock and surplice. The tippet, being a mark of clerical status, may be worn by any ordained person. Those with hoods marking degrees they have received, a symbol of academic status, may wear them, though this is typically reserved for the faculty or for special occasions. -The reader and officiant (and preacher, if there is a sermon) process from the baptistery of the chapel, with the reader leading and the officiant at the rear. They line up two (or three) abreast in a row even with their seats. They reverence the altar, then take their seats. The offering collected at the Good Friday service will support the ministries of the four diocese of the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East. X Maundy Thursday The word maundy is an English corruption of the Latin mandatum, meaning ‘command- ment’, that Jesus gives his disciples after washing their feet. “So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one an- other’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers great- er than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.” (John 13: 14–17 NRSV) After the Homily, all will be welcome to have their feet washed, and in turn, are invited to wash the feet of others. At the conclusion of the Eucharist, we are invited, as were the first disciples, to watch and pray with the Lord on the night before his crucifixion and death. Consecrated Bread and Wine are taken to the Altar of Repose in Centennial Chapel, and all are invited to keep watch through the night. It is a solemn, sober, and somber night—for we know what the first disciples did not: that Jesus will soon be arrested, tried unjustly, and put to death.
