Secondary Report SCIENCE REPORT Winter is cold and it is tempting to rug up and stay inside out of all the wind and the frost. Sadly when we do this we miss out on the best night skies to be out watching the stars. On cold nights the air is clearer, the earlier setting sun gives a darker sky to look at and the Southern Cross will be high over our heads. The planets are also so easy to spot right now. Look up after sun has set and the first star you see appear in the sky will be in the west at the moment. This star is actually a planet, Venus, the evening star (sometimes it wanders around the sun and becomes the morning star). Get out and have a look for yourself. I am telling you this because Year 7 managed to divert their science teacher onto talking astronomy one lesson whilst we were learning about the scale of the smallest things that are so small you cannot see them through a microscope right up to the largest things that make our sun look tiny. We will be looking at plenty of objects through microscopes to get the idea of scale and magnification. Year 8 and Year 9 have both been learning about energy with a particular focus on electricity. Electricity is not something we typically get to play with in life because of the danger but Kate Jones our practical’s setting up circuits, measuring Assistant Principal electricity through current and voltage have allowed us to use trial and error to safely understand how it works.
