While many church ministry efforts and programs have provided a short-term church sustainability, they have tended to be inward-focused and lacked the missional and outward orientation to engage and enhance the world. As a result, many urban churches have become socially and culturally isolated religious gated-house separated from their local culture and community. I propose that the most faithful and effective way to bring sustainability and mission of the church in the twenty-first century North American urban neighborhoods is through the ministry of arts and arts patronage in the church. In Chapter One, I highlighted the issue of (urban) church isolation as I profiled a ghetto and a gated church. In Chapter Two, I am giving examples of church isolation issues through the summaries of church need assessment reports. In Chapter Three, I examined and assessed the multiculturalism in Canada and the Intercultural Ministry in the United Church of Canada. In Chapter Four, I tried to respond to theological challenges inherent in North American churches’ approach to cross/multi/intercultural ministry from the perspectives of a postcolonial hermeneutics and through the lens of my own personal stories. In Chapter Five, I reviewed several key discussions on the subject of church engaging culture since Richard Niebuhr’s “Christ and Culture,” and proposed a theological paradigm for the supremacy of arts in engaging church with culture.

    Chapter 11 Megachurches and ‘Reverse Mission’ Richard Burgess 1 Introduction The presence of African Christian communities in Europe and North America represents one of the most significant developments within world Christianity over the past three decades (Adogame 2013; Gornik 2011; Hanciles 2008; Olupo­ na and Gemignani (eds.) 2007; Ter Haar 2001). In Europe, African churches are becoming an increasingly important addition to the urban religious landscape, especially in globalising cities such as London, Amsterdam and Berlin. The majority are Pentecostal or Charismatic, which represents the fastest­growing Christian tradition worldwide (Johnson 2013). Gerrie Ter Haar (2001: 13) re­ gards it as a fresh phase in European religious history, adding a new dimension to the multicultural society which Europe has become since the end of the Second World War. Whereas in the past, mission has been understood as a movement from the North to the South, now it is happening in the opposite direction, a phenomenon commonly referred to as ‘reverse mission’ (Burgess 2011; Freston 2010; Koning 2009; Währisch­Oblau 2009). This chapter examines ‘reverse mission’ as it relates to megachurches of Nigerian provenance. A CRITIQUE OF THE NIGERIAN ECONOMIC MIGRANTS TURNED MISSIONARIES IN LONDON Babatunde Aderemi Adedibu Research Fellow, Department of Practical Theology and Missiology, University of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch, South Africa. +2348147689754; tundedibu@gmail.com Abstract Nigeria despite being one of the major oil producing nations in the World since the exploration, discovery and exportation of crude oil in the late 1960‘s is attracting a lot of global attention of late as Nigerian Pentecostalism seems to constitute a non-commodity export from the country to the West with its globalisation. This was accentuated by poor leadership ineptitude as well as moral corruption of Nigerian leaders over the years as many Nigerians are consistently seeking greener pastures in other African countries and the West. Interestingly despite the economic motivations of most of these migrants, it has been observed that some of these migrants travelled with their religious subscriptions particularly the Pentecostal adherents and some are now missionaries in the England and other urban cities in the West. The economic migrants turned missionaries claims of re- evangelising the host community seems increasingly suspect in the light of ostentatious living as well as poor accountability and probity. Using sociological analyses and historiographical approaches which also entails participant observations of the missionaries, this articles concludes that there is the urgent need for incarnational living and cultural sensitivity to the new context of the missionaries demonstrating more probity and accountability. Notwithstanding the exponential growth of Pentecostalism, there are contextual pastoral leadership challenges within the African-led Pentecostal tradition in British society. The first challenge observed is that the pastoral leadership practices of the African-led Pentecostal churches in British society are situated in their socio-cultural and theological orientations; this situation poses contextual challenges for pastors in carrying out their ecclesiastical duties. The second problem concerns leadership. There are often, for example, allegations about some pastors within this tradition mismanaging church finances, practising sexual immorality, taking money for prophetic utterances and abusing their power. These very troubling allegations have led to some Christians leaving this church tradition to join other churches, especially white- led British Pentecostal/charismatic churches, and some have stopped going to church altogether. Moreover, a review of literature suggests there has not been an attempt to undertake an in-depth study of the pastoral leadership praxis of the African-led Pentecostal church community in British society. Thus, there is a gap to be filled in Pentecostal pastoral leadership scholarship. The present research investigates these contextual challenges and formulates markers for exemplary pastoral leadership among African-led Pentecostal churches in British society. Muir Birkbeck College University of London 2 ABSTRACT This thesis explores congregational singing through the lens of the local and global in Black Majority Churches (BMCs) in the Royal London Borough of Greenwich, UK. The phenomenal growth of modern-day Pentecostalism is its ability to negotiate the local and the global, and a number of scholars agree that up-tempo, lively music is integral to the Black religious experience. However, there is a paucity of literature in the UK that analyses this area in a detailed and systematic manner. Methodologically, Nattiez’s model of musical discourse is employed within a framework of critical discourse analysis to interrogate his ‘esthesic’, ‘immanent’ and ‘poietic’ elements, - that is the experience by the receivers, the music itself and the perspective of the producers - at New Wine Church, (NWC), Woolwich as the primary case study. The perspective of a multimodal analysis has uncovered multiple meaning-making processes within the context of a neo- Pentecostal megachurch with an emphasis on prosperity gospel. Firstly, the esthesic perspective found that the songs popular in the global Christian music industry fulfilled their role as Pentecostal liturgy, whilst simultaneously supporting and reinforcing the tenets of a prosperity gospel. Secondly, the immanent (musicological) analysis revealed simple, easy songs that had been altered through a process of African American ‘Blackenizing’.
