The committee met, pursuant to call, at 1:35 p.m., in room 334, Cannon House Office Building, Hon. Christopher H. Smith (chair- man of the committee) presiding. Present: Representatives Smith of New Jersey, Moran, Simpson, Simmons, Brown of South Carolina, Evans, Filner, Carson, Snyder, Rodriguez and Berkley. OPENING STATEMENT OF CHAIRMAN SMITH OF NEW JERSEY The CHAIRMAN. The hearing will come to order; and good after- noon, ladies and gentlemen. The events of September 11 in New York City and the Pentagon demonstrate the true character of our Nation. We are a great Na- tion. Although we have been stunned by the ferocity and vicious- ness of our enemies, it is not the attack itself or the death, destruc- tion, anger or sorrow that will define our national character. The important thing, I would respectfully submit, is how we respond as a free Nation to acts of terror. And we will indeed respond. As I said on the floor of the House last week, those who wish us harm should know that American is strong, determined, and resil- ient. America is united and is not to be underestimated. With God’s guidance and blessing, we will recover, and we will prevail. This hearing this afternoon is intended to illuminate what we, as a Congress, need to do to assist our homeless veterans. Feminists claim that the event promotes objectification and oversexualization of contestants in direct contrast to the Miss America Organization’s (MAO) message of progressive female empowerment. The MAO’s position as the leading source of women’s scholarships worldwide begs the question: should women have to compete in a bikini to pay for a place in a cellular biology lecture? As dissent for the pageant mounts, the new head of the MAO Board of Directors, Gretchen Carlson, and the first all-female Board of Directors must decide where to steer the faltering organization. The MAO, like many other businesses, must choose whether to modernize in-line with social movements or whole-heartedly maintain their contentious traditions. When considering the MAO’s long and controversial history, along with their recent scandals, the #MeToo Movement, and the complex world of television entertainment, the path ahead is anything but clear. Ultimately, Gretchen Carlson and the Board of Directors may have to decide between their feminist beliefs and their professional business aspirations. Underlying this case, then, is the question of whether a sufficient definition of women’s leadership is simply leadership by women or if the term and its weight necessitate leadership for women. Will the board’s final decision keep this American institution afloat? And, more importantly, what precedent will it set for women executives who face similar quandaries of identity? I’m going to read a bit of her bio to you. sit in and buckle down because it’s going to be a bit lengthy. She’s a native of Maysville, Kentucky and a graduate of Mason County High School. She attained a master’s degree in design and illustration from the University of Cincinnati. But it is the self-proclaimed tomboy who did not seriously compete in a beauty pageant until age 20 who wants told her mother at age four, during a gospel sing with her family, she was one day going to be Miss America. Well ladies and gentlemen she did just that. When the former Heather Rene French was crowned the title of Miss America in 2000 continuing a tradition of dominance by Southern contestants in the Miss America Pageant and winning on a Miss America platform of raising awareness of the plight of homeless veterans that made her dream come true.
