Preparing for a New Philanthropic Landscape Knowledge is one of philanthropy’s most valuable foundations. Generating, examining, and sharing knowledge is central to our school’s enterprise. New insights this year ranged from gender differences and global philanthropy Amir Pasic Eugene R. Tempel Dean to tax policy’s impact and how virtual reality affects empathy. Research on the Indiana University Lilly Family philanthropy of traditionally under-represented communities and the Mays School of Philanthropy Family Institute Diverse Speaker Series demonstrated that the diversity of philanthropy helps us appreciate the commonality of human generosity. Improving philanthropy requires better connecting research and professional practice. New partnerships developed by faculty and staff, The Fund Raising School, Lake Institute on Faith & Giving, the Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy, and the Women’s Philanthropy Institute unite research and practice to advance philanthropy. For our students, it was a year of abundant opportunities. New learning options, including an Honors major and an accelerated master’s program for undergraduates, make a philanthropy education even more compelling and convenient. Generous donors provided scholarships, fellowships, and endowed faculty positions to prepare our students to become the next generation of philanthropy leaders and innovators in an ever-changing philanthropic landscape. We thank you, our colleagues, supporters, and friends, for your encouragement and for making these opportunities possible. Best regards, Amir Pasic Eugene R. Inside back cover philanthropy.iupui.edu 1 A generous gift from the Thomasson Family is providing four-year scholarships equivalent to the cost of tuition and fees, room, board, books, and support for a semester of study abroad to three incoming, first-year undergraduate students. Thomasson Scholars Sylvana Jajou, Emma Rota-Autry, and Lucy Hauser are already gaining philanthropy experience and have careers planned that will change lives and communities. Alumni Ashleigh Graves-Roesler, M.A.’09, and Bryan Roesler, M.A./M.P.A.’09, recently served in the United States Peace Corps in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine. The fundraising professionals built capacity and sustainability for local NGOs, including writing grant proposals and teaching proposal writing. The experience culminated in the launch of their new business, writing proposals and managing grants for nonprofits. 2 philanthropy.iupui.edu Three esteemed scholars were appointed to endowed chairs created by generous donors. Patricia Snell Herzog, Ph.D., is the Melvin Simon Chair in Philanthropy. Laurie Paarlberg, Ph.D., (shown) is the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation Chair on Community Foundations. Pamala Wiepking, Ph.D., is the Visiting Stead Family Chair in International Philanthropy. The Mays Family Institute Diverse Speaker Series hosted leading experts on diversity, equity, and inclusion in philanthropy, including black, LGBTQ and Latinx philanthropy. The speakers were: Helene Gayle, The Chicago Community Trust; Susan Batten, ABFE: A Philanthropic Partnership; Jim Moore, University of Illinois Foundation; Noah Drezner, Columbia University; and Sandra Vargas, formerly of The Minneapolis Foundation. Academic milestones include the first graduates to earn degrees entirely via our online master’s degree option, an Honors Major, and an Accelerated Master’s for undergraduates that lets students finish sooner and save money. Among master’s, Ph.D., and graduate certificate graduates, 100% were employed or pursuing further education within six months of graduation, as were 94% of bachelor’s graduates. The Women’s Philanthropy Institute released the first study to examine the intersection of race, gender, and giving. Women Give 2019 found that people of all races give to charity, and a donor’s race doesn’t have a significant effect on the amount given. The report, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, demonstrates the unique perspectives women of color bring to philanthropy. philanthropy.iupui.edu 3 The Patterson Foundation and the school launched a new program that offers our master’s degree graduates an opportunity to become Fellows at the foundation. Through the year-long, career-building experience, Fellows learn innovative philanthropic principles while sharing their expertise with the foundation. Hannah Saeger Karnei, M.A.’19, was selected as the first Fellow. Strategic and generous grants from the McKinney Family Foundation created the McKinney Professor of Environmental Resilience and Philanthropy and reinforced the McKinney Family Philanthropic Fellows program that prepares students to become a new generation of change makers. Believed to be among the world’s first such professorships, the McKinney Professor will increase research on how philanthropy can help protect the environment. 4 philanthropy.iupui.edu The Fund Raising School launched a new Certificate in Fund Raising Leadership program, which allows both current and aspiring leaders to develop and strengthen their leadership abilities. The program prepares them to create a compelling vision, lead change, and coach implementation. It also deepens understanding of philanthropy, teaches the art of fundraising, and instills fundraising ethics. The Fund Raising School also offers a Certificate in Fund Raising Management and a Certificate in Nonprofit Executive Leadership. Lake Institute on Faith & Giving’s Distinguished Visitor program and Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy hosted a public discussion Race Matters: Faith and Philanthropy in the African American Community. Brad Braxton, Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, Starsky Wilson, Deaconess Foundation and the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, and Aimée Laramore and Leah Gunning Francis, Christian Theological Seminary, comprised the panel. Students on our study abroad trip, Philanthropy in a Comparative European Perspective, traveled to Berlin and Hamburg in Germany and to Amsterdam and Rotterdam in the Netherlands, hearing from world-leading scholars, philanthropy practitioners, and policy makers, and visiting local universities, social enterprises, and nonprofits. Participants captured their experiences and observations in posts on the course’s blog. The 2018 U.S. Trust Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy provides a deeper analysis of the philanthropic priorities, motivations, and preferences of donors at this level, uncovering important differences in howwomen, millennials, LGBTQ individuals, and people from diverse racial and ethnic communities give and the causes and organizations they support. It is the seventh report in the biennial series. philanthropy.iupui.edu 5 The Donald A. Campbell Chair in Fundraising Leadership, will be created with a $1.5 million gift from nationally recognized fundraising leader Donald A. Campbell, Jr., CFRE, a long-time board member and advisor. The chair will prepare students and professionals to lead effective fundraising programs, conduct research, connect research and professional practice, collaborate with The Fund Raising School, and teach courses. Genevieve Shaker, M.A.’98, is incoming chair of the Philanthropic Studies Faculty. A scholar who was an advancement professional for nearly 20 years, her research aims to improve professional practice and policy and build scholarly knowledge. The recipient of numerous awards, Shaker co-developed and teaches the Celebrity Philanthropy course and is associate editor of the journal Philanthropy & Education. 6 philanthropy.iupui.edu Student Accomplishments & Awards Headcount by Academic Level 210 is the inaugural Hannah Saeger arnei 198 Patterson Foundation Fellow 49 175 177 161 55 53 55 Emma RotaAutry, Lucy Hauser, 50 and Sylvana Jajou are the new 132 Thomasson Scholars 113 90 77 95 We had our largest graduating class 34 32 (75) in May 2019 27 30 29 FALL 2014 FALL 2015 FALL 2016 FALL 2017 FALL 2018 Degrees Conferred by Fiscal ear July June 79 Thad Austin was awarded the 75 IUPUI William M.
