Great play and Great PlaywrightBy CustomerThis is another play by Florian Seller that I loved. I saw "The Father" on Broadway and really enjoyed it. Then I got to work on a scene from this and found it as funny as "The Father" was serious. It's great to see a playwright that can do hilarious just as good as he can do heartfelt and dramatic. A great play!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent playBy Humberto Lucerothis author is surprisingly witty, you can tell that this play would be breathtaking on stage. I can't wait to see it performed, as soon as possible I will book the tickets1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy BrianExcellent new French Playwright.... Two couples. However, the facade of polite society soon falls away as the two couples regress to childish accusations, bullying and bickering themselves. Originally written in French and entitled Le Dieu du Carnage, The God of Carnage premiered in 2006 at the Schauspielhaus in Zurich directed by Jürgen Gosch and it made its French-language debut at the Théâtre Antoine in Paris in January 2008 directed by the author. Reza’s long-time collaborator Christopher Hampton translated and adapted an English-language version that premiered at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End in March 2008 and the production won the 2009 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. Hampton further adapted the script for an Americanized edition, which premiered on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in February 2009 and the production won Best Play (Reza’s second win). The international popularity of the play led to a film adaptation called Carnage, which premiered in Italy at the Venice Film Festival before being released in the United Stated in September 2011. Written by Reza with director Roman Polanski, the film starred Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz. ABOUT SEST SEST – The Stockholm English Speaking Theatre, now in its third year, presents Yasmina Reza’s The God of Carnage, translated by Christopher Hampton, from Feb 15 to Feb 25 at Teater Brunnsgatan 4.

  • The Father Production Notes 30 October 2020 *Amended*
THE FATHER PRODUCTION NOTES 30 OCTOBER 2020 *AMENDED* INTRODUCTION THE FATHER is drawn from the stage play of the same name, which was written by Florian Zeller and launched in Paris in 2012, winning a Moliere Award for Best Play, before hitting Broadway and London’s West End, where it won both Tony and Olivier Awards for Best Actor (for Frank Langella and Kenneth Cranham respectively). Zeller directed the film adaptation - his feature debut - filmed in London, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Christopher Hampton (ATONEMENT, DANGEROUS LIAISONS). Alongside Oscar®-winners Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, rounding out the film’s cast are Mark Gatiss (THE FAVOURITE, TV’s Sherlock), Imogen Poots (GREEN ROOM, A LONG WAY DOWN), Rufus Sewell (JUDY, TV’s The Man in the High Castle) and Olivia Williams (VICTORIA & ABDUL, AN EDUCATION). In THE FATHER, Hopkins plays the eponymous role of a mischievous and highly independent man who, as he ages, refuses all assistance from his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman). Yet, such help has become essential following Anne’s decision to move to Paris with her partner. As Anne’s father tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality. THE FATHER is a Trademark Films, F Comme Film, Ciné-@, and Les Films du Cru co-production, produced by David Parfitt (MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE), Jean-Louis Livi (READ MY LIPS, UN COEUR EN HIVER) and Philippe Carcassonne (COCO BEFORE CHANEL, RIDICULE). Also producing are financier Christophe Spadone for Les Films du Cru and the stage play’s London producer Simon Friend for SFE.

Journalist in Silent Film 35 The Image of the Journalist in Silent Film, 1890 to 1929: Part One 1890 to 1919 Joe Saltzman Professor of Journalism Director of the Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) A Project of the Norman Lear Center Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism University of Southern California Los Angeles, CA [email protected] with Liz Mitchell Senior Research Associate Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism University of Southern California Los Angeles, CA [email protected] Introduction This is the first installment in the landmark study of “The Image of the Journalist in Silent Film, 1890 to 1929.” It covers 1,948 films from 1890 to 1919. Part Two will cover the years from 1920 to the beginning of recorded sound in 1929. This is the first comprehensive study of the beginning of cinema’s earliest depictions of the journalist, mostly newspaper reporters, editors, and publishers. Newspaper fiction flourished at a time when journalism “was a revolutionary force, tearing up traditions, redefining public morality, and lending voice and encouragement to the disenfranchised. It reflected currents sweeping through every phase of American life. The skyrocketing circulations, the manic search for exclusive news, the sensational headlines, and the concentration of newspaper ownership were signs of an America changing from a rural society to an urban and industrial one. Since journalism so clearly mirrored and so loudly supported the new order, it became the preeminent symbol for the mechanization, standardization, democratization, and vulgarization of culture.”1 Historian Howard Good points out that the 1890s “represented a watershed not only in American journalism but also in American history.

‘NOT JUST FOR GAYS ANYMORE’: MEN, MASCULINITIES AND MUSICAL THEATRE by JAMES MICHAEL LOVELOCK A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Music School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham September 2016 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT This thesis explores how the changing masculinities of the 21st century have affected how young men connect to musical theatre as a genre that has been stereotypically seen as gay. The investigation is first located in the theoretical framework of masculinities, utilising the concepts of the male sex role, hegemonic masculinities and inclusive masculinity to chart how the performance of the male gender has changed over the past century. The project then adopts an empirical approach to a group of 161 men and 25 women, establishing a methodological framework for correlating sexual orientation with attitudes towards musical theatre. There is a further honing of this methodology through the adoption of Jenifer Toksvig’s The Fairytale Moment exercise, which identifies how each participant connects to narrative through a core emotional drive.
