  • The Big Lemon
Social enterprise: Turning Ideas Into Action Middlesex University Week 2: Making the Community a part of your team Community Led-Sustainable Transport: the case of the Big Lemon Background In the last few decades, urban areas across the world have become increasingly automobile-dominated and less sustainable. It is clear that sustainable transport is one of the greatest challenges in the pursuit of sustainable development, as it is one of the largest contributors to our individual carbon footprints influencing the global climate. In this regard, we have witnessed the transport sector taking numerous measures to lessen the burden on the environment, reclaiming urban space from the automobile and prohibiting cars from major parts of downtown areas and confining them in other ways. These examples are nowadays considered as leading cities of sustainable urban development because of the work they have done to improve public transport, encouraging non-motorized modes, creating pedestrian zones, limiting the use of private cars, and trying to undo the transformation of cities caused by automobile dominance. Country Context: United Kingdom Motor vehicles generate more air pollution than any other single human activity, yet people will not give up their cars unless the quality of public transport is improved. Statistical data suggest that in 2012, the United Kingdom (UK) total energy consumption from transport was 53 million tons of oil equivalent, or about 36% of the UK total. The total carbon of the sector by 2013 was 117 million tons of CO2, or about a quarter of the UK total. With this in mind, the UK Government has latterly recognised the need to take action to control the rate of traffic growth, improve the environmental performance of vehicles and increase public awareness about the environmental impacts of pollutant emissions from transport.

  • Woodingdean Youth Centre Mybus Case
Woodingdean Youth Centre MYBus Case Study What was the issue? The issue was lack of accessible youth services for young people in the Deans area of Brighton & Hove. Specifically our research discovered that the needs of many young people were not being effectively met because there are no youth clubs / centres in Saltdean, Ovingdean or Rottingdean and Woodingdean Youth Centre is situated on the fringe of Woodingdean (not easily accessible to all young people). The research with young people uncovered that they wanted a service that could work on the streets so that Information, advice and guidance and positive activities were easy to access and could go out to them. Who did you engage with? Primarily we engaged with young people to develop a ‘youth-led’ project which was underpinned by our organisational values with a specific focus on involving young people in the development of services aimed at them. We engaged with Local Action Teams, Residents Associations, Parish Council, other community groups and local charitable giving organisations such as Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions and PARC (Play Area In Rottingdean Committee), our local Councillors and local businesses to develop and establish the project. Much of the engagement was focused on meeting community needs and fundraising for the project. We also worked with Brighton & Hove City Council Youth & Connexions Service and Voluntary Sector Funding Unit who have been very supportive of our efforts to develop services for young people. What did you do? As a direct response to the type of development in services that young people have told us they wanted to see we raised funds to purchase a Mobile Home and customised it.

  • Brighton Area Buswatch Representing Local Bus Users
Brighton Area Buswatch Representing local bus users A branch of Bus Users UK Buswatch News – August 2019 We need to keep buses in St James’s Street Over the years there have been many calls for St James’s Street to be pedestrianised. It is a busy and vibrant street with a wide variety of shops, cafés and bars. Local businesses are keen to promote it as a destination for visitors. Full pedestrianisation has been suggested again. It seems an obvious improvement, but there would be big disadvantages for bus users which need to be considered. Some have suggested only the Old Steine junction is needs to be closed – which would stop buses getting through - but allow delivery vans and all other vehicles to gain access via the side streets which need to remain open. That would eliminate buses and reduce overall traffic but do probably do little to reduce emissions. Nearly all the buses in St James’s Street are modern ultra-low emission vehicles and a few are already electric – with many more likely to follow. Brighton & Hove Buses tells us the bus stop outside Morrisons is the 4th busiest in the city and St James’s Street bus stops are used by an estimated 2 million passengers a year. Of these around 500,000 are using disabled or older people’s concessionary passes. St James’s Street is served by around 28 buses an hour on routes to Whitehawk (1), Woodingdean & Rottingdean (2) Brighton Marina (7) Queens Park (18) Bristol Estate (37/37B) Saltdean (47) and Ovingdean & Woodingdean (52).
