    Articles by Prince Rama Varma Tribute to Kishore Kumar As a child, I used to listen to a lot of Hindi film songs. As a middle aged man, I still do. The difference however, is that when I was a child I had no idea which song was sung by Mukesh, which song by Rafi, by Kishore and so on unlike these days when I can listen to a Kishore song I have never heard before and roughly pinpoint the year when he may have sung it as well as the actor who may have appeared on screen. On 13th October 1987, I heard that Kishore Kumar had passed away. In the evening there was a tribute to him on TV which was when I discovered that 85% of my favourite songs were sung by him. Like thousands of casual music lovers in our country, I used to be under the delusion that Kishore sang mostly funny songs, while Rafi sang romantic numbers, Mukesh,sad songs…and Manna Dey, classical songs. During the past twenty years, I have journeyed a lot, both in music as well as in life. And many of my childhood heroes have diminished in stature over the years. But a few…..a precious few….have grown……. steadily….and continue to grow, each time I am exposed to their brilliance. M.D.Ramanathan, Martina Navratilova, Bruce Lee, Swami Vivekananda, Kunchan Nambiar, to name a few…..and Kishore Kumar. I have had the privilege of studying classical music for more than two and a half decades from some truly phenomenal Gurus and I go around giving lecture demonstrations about how important it is for a singer to know an instrument and vice versa.

While it is true that there is nothing Twhich can substitute a face-to-face encounter and/or meeting to achieve the desired result, the next best course is to gird up our loins and innovate ways in which the NCPA would most benefit and the employees, musicians, technicians, etc. would occupy themselves meaningfully. Having laid out these objectives before our heads of divisions, I must say that a modicum of success has been achieved. The musicians in residence of the SOI have been furiously preparing new programmes and have already, in the last month, recorded four of them fully for the digital platform. These have been recorded in the theatre and with better sound than when the audience is present. Similarly, full- year plans, conditions permitting, have been presented by the Indian Music, International Music, Dance and Theatre genres. Preparations are, therefore, underway to put together a year’s programme of likely performances when the lockdown and other bans are lifted and otherwise, recording online for the presence of the NCPA to be noted by its members and the public alike. Methods of management are being put together and we realise that getting the finest advisors in areas where we need these inputs is the cheapest way of keeping up with technology and modern practices.

These event brought a thought in my mind to list the Sindhis who are working in film industry, hence I started searching on web. I hoped that I could collect more than 100 names but this figure reached more than 350 numbers which are listed and detailed in this collection.

    Lights, Camera, Laughs Hindu Business Line, Blink, August 1, 2020 Imagine an adult masquerading as an overgrown child in shorts; imagine the same man dressed in drag trying to fob off the lecherous advances of the film’s villain; and then imagine him singing both the male and female parts of a duet. All this was done by Kishore Kumar – the versatile genius of the Hindi film industry. The film was the 1962 laugh-a-minute classic Half Ticket, which to this date remains one of the funniest films made in Bollywood. Like its song-and-dance routines, comedy has always been an integral part of Hindi cinema. Conforming to the rasa theory of Natya Shastra, the Hindi film-makers made sure that hasya rasa, like shringar and veer rasa, was always incorporated in their work. Comedy was largely incidental to the main plot of the film; comic interludes, again like the songs, were mostly included as breaks and to provide “comic relief” to the audience. The comedy sequences would usually be there in the first half of the film before the second half with its intense melodrama led to its climax. For the most part, the roles went to actors who specialised in these roles. From Gope to Johnny Walker, the performers were as well known as the leading actors. As soon as one saw their names in the credits one knew that there would be some comic entertainment. Of course, each of these great comedians had an exceptional sense of timing which is absolutely essential for comedy. But they also had their distinctive styles, mannerisms and persona which were cultivated in film after film.

    13. POPULAR HINDI CINEMA AND THE FILM SONG Corey Creekmur While popular Indian films – especially the pan-Indian Hindi language movies produced in Bombay (now officially Mumbai) commonly and condescendingly known as ‘Bollywood’ cinema – typically share a number of stylistic charac- teristics and narrative conventions, the inclusion of film songs is their most per- sistent feature and an element of South Asian film culture which extends far beyond the boundaries of cinema halls. Film songs enjoy massive popularity and long-term relevance for audiences, and so frequently exceed their original significance within the films for which they were composed and performed. Although the claim is slightly overstated, popular music in India is film music, and the success of many films depends upon the popularity of their songs, usually ‘launched’ in advance of a film’s opening: if the music isn’t first a hit, the film is unlikely to then succeed. Circulated through other media such as radio, television and commercial as well as pirated recordings, film songs per- meate daily life in India; they can be heard at weddings as well as political rallies, in slums and in five-star hotels. The popular party game of antakshari, also played within films and on television quiz shows, depends upon players who can quickly recall and sing a large catalogue of film songs. While pop music soundtracks have become increasingly crucial to the mar- keting and success of American films across genres, popular Indian cinema as a whole has been a thoroughly musical cinema since the arrival of film sound, serving a massive audience in India and abroad that has come to expect songs in films which might otherwise be identified as romances, comedies, thrillers or melodramas.
