SUTTON SCORES FROM LONG DISTANCE

Broncos WR Courtland Sutton’s 70‐yard reception in the first quarter represented Denver’s longest scoring play from scrimmage since WR Bennie Fowler’s 76‐yard touchdown catch vs. Kansas City on Nov. 27, 2016. The play was also just the seventh scoring pass of 70+ yards in the NFL this season. Sutton finished the game with a team‐high 92 receiving yards on four catches (23.0 avg.) and now ranks eighth in the NFL with 401 receiving yards through Week 5. This is the first time since 2015 (WRs & ) a Broncos has had 400+yards in their first five games of a season.

* ‐ Before Denver’s 7‐play, 75‐yard touchdown drive to start the game, the Broncos had gone 13 consecutive games without a touchdown on their initial possession. * ‐ Denver, which entered today’s game without a takeaway through its first four games, got three takeaways against the Chargers: an interception by S Justin Simmons in the first quarter; a forced fumble by S that resulted in a touchback on the last play of the half; and an interception in the end zone by ILB Alexander Johnson in the third quarter. * ‐ Broncos rookie DE Dre’Mont Jones was credited with a blocked field goal in the second quarter—the first blocked field goal by Denver since S Justin Simmons vs. Pittsburgh on Nov. 25, 2018. * ‐ The Broncos held the Chargers to just 3.8 yards per play (64‐246) to represent the lowest figure allowed since Week 7 last season (3.4 at Arizona, 10/18/18). * ‐ The Broncos outgained the Chargers 191‐35 on the ground with their +156 rushing differential representing the highest such figure since 2014 (+173, 214‐71, at Kansas City, 11/30/14). * ‐ This represented just the fourth time in 29 career games against the Broncos that QB Philip Rivers did not throw a touchdown pass. * ‐ ILB Alexander Johnson, who made his first career start, played his first defensive snaps of the season and finished second on the team with nine tackles (6 solo) to go along with two passes defensed and his interception in the end zone.
