This year's Festival will be the final stage in the Olympic hockey team selection process, as Olympic coach Herb Brooks and General Manager Ken Johannson will invite twenty-six players to remain at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center following the six-day pageant. Ivan said that the 1979 gathering will again feature the regional team format, with squads representing New England, the Great Lakes area, the Midwest and a Central (At-Large) entry taking part in the ice hockey competition. The United States Olympic Committee-sponsored event, designed to give America's top amateur athletes an Olympic-type competitive opportunity in non-Olympic years and to maintain public interest in amateur athletics, will this year feature over 2,500 athletes in thirty sports. Only three winter games are included in the Festival: ice hockey, figure skating and • short-track speed skating. The staff of each NSF ice hockey entry will be composed of a General Manager, an active American college coach, an active AHAUS coach and • a former U.S. Olympic hockey player. The 1979 hockey competition will A.H.A. be a single round-robin affair extending over the six days of the Festival, July 27 to August 1. r~ - more - amateur hockey association of the united states . 1:1 1979 National Sports Festival hockey rosters (3) Dave Ogrean Public Relations Director MIDWEST 1 0 Lake Circle Colorado Springs, Colo. 80906 General Manager: Ron Woodey Phone: (303) 471 -9400 Head Coach: Gus Hendrickson, TWX : 91 0-920-4946 Minnesota-Duluth Cable Address: AHAUS CSP Ass't.
