Ice Hockey Rosters for 1979 National Sports Festival Announced Dave Ogrean Public Relations Director FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (April 12, 1979) 1 0 Lake Circle Colorado Springs, Colo. 80906 COUNTDOWN TO LAKE PLACID CONTINUES; Phone: (303) 471-9400 ICE HOCKEY ROSTERS FOR 1979 TWX : 910-920-4946 Cable Address : AHAUS CSP NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED CHICAGO The United States Olympic ice hockey effort took another step down the road to Lake Placid and the 1980 Ol~pic Winter Games this week when Tommy Ivan, Festival Hockey Chairman, announced the seventy players who will compete in the second National Sports Festival this summer. This year's Festival will be the final stage in the Olympic hockey team selection process, as Olympic coach Herb Brooks and General Manager Ken Johannson will invite twenty-six players to remain at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center following the six-day pageant. Ivan said that the 1979 gathering will again feature the regional team format, with squads representing New England, the Great Lakes area, the Midwest and a Central (At-Large) entry taking part in the ice hockey competition. The United States Olympic Committee-sponsored event, designed to give America's top amateur athletes an Olympic-type competitive opportunity in non-Olympic years and to maintain public interest in amateur athletics, will this year feature over 2,500 athletes in thirty sports. Only three winter games are included in the Festival: ice hockey, figure skating and • short-track speed skating. INTRODUCTION Thank you for your interest in the NC Force/Golden Bears program. 2021-22 will mark our 7th season as a youth hockey program in the Carolina Amateur Hockey Association as part of USA Hockey. Beginning in 2015-26 with two teams, U16 and U18, the program has grown to 11 teams in 2020-21. We have overwhelming interest, and we are looking to expand again in 2021-22. Our program is unique in that the professional coaches within the program do not change and each year it builds upon its experiences at multiple levels to continuously learning the best practices to develop kids from the youngest levels to the oldest levels. We do not simply worry about the development of each player within a particular season, we constantly are envisioning where each player will be multiple seasons down the road, based on their physical development and their hockey IQ. We feel that putting each player in the best situations to succeed is the best way to ensure each player keeps their enjoyment levels high and are given the time to build their love of the game as they move from non-checking, to checking, from single A to AA to AAA to Junior to College and to Professional hockey. With all that said, we believe the most important aspects of hockey is to have fun and to teach character and discipline, Sincerely, Paul Strand II. Today, the 60 “campers” and several players from the famed 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team took to the Olympic Center’s Herb Brooks Arena ice to participate in team practice and evaluations. In addition to the practices and evaluations, the campers also toured the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, where many sat in front of the museum’s television to watch the “Miracle on Ice Game,” which can be viewed every day while the Museum is open. Today’s camp also included the draft, where players were broken into four teams (Red, White, Blue and Gold), Brock Waller (Westfield, Ind.) was the first player selected. These campers come from as far away as Seattle, Wash. and range in age from 28 to 68 years-old. While in the two-time Olympic village they will spend the entire time playing hockey, hanging out with and listening to stories told by 16 players from the famed 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team. It was 36 years ago that this group of mostly college age hockey players defeated the favored Soviet Union 4-3, in the game that’s known world-wide as the “Miracle on Ice,” en- route to the improbable Olympic gold medal. The 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team players taking part in the camp include Bill Baker, Neal Broten, Dave Christian, Mike Eruzione, John Harrington, Steve Janaszek, Mark Johnson, Rob McClanahan, Ken Morrow, Jack O’Callahan, Mark Pavlich, Mike Ramsey, Buzz Schneider, Dave Silk, Eric Strobel and Mark Wells. The squad’s assistant coach, Craig Patrick, is also in Lake Placid. All Fantasy Campers were picked up from Albany (N.Y.) International Airport and transported to Lake Placid via motor coach. While in Lake Placid, they’ll receive hockey instruction and play games while spending four nights at the High Peaks Resort.

    In one of the most dramatic upsets in Olympic history, the underdog U.S. hockey team, made up of college players, defeats the four-time defending gold-medal winning Soviet team at the XIII Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. The Soviet squad, previously regarded as the finest in the world, fell to the youthful American team 4-3 before a frenzied crowd of 10,000 spectators. Two days later, the Americans defeated Finland 4-2 to clinch the hockey gold. The Soviet team had captured the previous four Olympic hockey golds, going back to 1964, and had not lost an Olympic hockey game since 1968. Three days before the Lake Placid Games began, the Soviets routed the U.S. team 10-3 in an exhibition game at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Americans looked scrappy, but few blamed them for it--their average age, after all, was only 22, and their team captain, Mike Eruzione, was recruited from the obscurity of the Toledo Blades of the International League. Few had high hopes for the seventh-seeded U.S. team entering the Olympic tournament, but the team soon silenced its detractors, making it through the opening round of play undefeated, with four victories and one tie, thus advancing to the four-team medal round. The Soviets, however, were seeded No. 1 and as expected went undefeated, with five victories in the first round. On Friday afternoon, February 22, the American amateurs and the Soviet dream team met before a sold-out crowd at Lake Placid.
