  • Sporting Group Study Guide Naturally Active and Alert, Sporting Dogs Make Likeable, Well-Rounded Companions
Sporting Group Study Guide Naturally active and alert, Sporting dogs make likeable, well-rounded companions. Remarkable for their instincts in water and woods, many of these breeds actively continue to participate in hunting and other field activities. Potential owners of Sporting dogs need to realize that most require regular, invigorating exercise. The breeds of the AKC Sporting Group were all developed to assist hunters of feathered game. These “sporting dogs” (also referred to as gundogs or bird dogs) are subdivided by function—that is, how they hunt. They are spaniels, pointers, setters, retrievers, and the European utility breeds. Of these, spaniels are generally considered the oldest. Early authorities divided the spaniels not by breed but by type: either water spaniels or land spaniels. The land spaniels came to be subdivided by size. The larger types were the “springing spaniel” and the “field spaniel,” and the smaller, which specialized on flushing woodcock, was known as a “cocking spaniel.” ~~How many breeds are in this group? 31~~ 1. American Water Spaniel a. Country of origin: USA (lake country of the upper Midwest) b. Original purpose: retrieve from skiff or canoes and work ground c. Other Names: N/A d. Very Brief History: European immigrants who settled near the great lakes depended on the region’s plentiful waterfowl for sustenance. The Irish Water Spaniel, the Curly-Coated Retriever, and the now extinct English Water Spaniel have been mentioned in histories as possible component breeds. e. Coat color/type: solid liver, brown or dark chocolate. A little white on toes and chest is permissible.

  • The American Water Spaniel: Yankee Doodle Dandy
The American Water Spaniel: Yankee Doodle Dandy James B. Spencer HUP! Training Flushing Spaniels The American Way he American Water Spaniel (AWS) is as American as George M. Cohan, and just as capable of “doing it all” in his particular line of work. T A marvelous little all-weather ducker, the AWS can also bust the nastiest cover in the uplands to flush and retrieve birds for the boss. The dog’s small size and placid temperament make him ideal in a duck skiff, where he can slip into and out of the water without upsetting or soaking the skipper. His methodical thoroughness in the uplands makes him a delightful companion for the gunner over thirty-five years of age. Developed in the last century in the Great Lakes region, and now the state dog of Wisconsin, this native breed possesses so many talents that the national breed club, American Water Spaniel Club (AWSC), has struggled for years trying to decide whether to seek AKC classification as a retriever or as a flushing spaniel. The breed must be classified as one or the other before it can participate in AKC Field Trials and hunting tests. The breed needs the exposure these activities, especially the AKC hunting tests, would give it among dog-loving hunters. Trouble is, the AWSC membership is badly split – four ways. Some members favor classification as a spaniel. Some favor classification as a retriever. Others fearing that either would eventually damage the breed’s dual abilities, have until very recently held out for dual classification. Still others prefer no classification at all.

  • Official Standard for the Boykin Spaniel General Appearance
Page 1 of 2 Official Standard for the Boykin Spaniel General Appearance - The Boykin Spaniel was developed in South Carolina, USA as a medium-sized sporting dog with a docked tail. The breed is built to cover all types of ground conditions with agility and reasonable speed. Size and weight were essential in development of the breed as these hunting companions needed to be lighter and smaller than their larger sporting dog cousins to fit in the portable section boats of the time period. As a result, the Boykin Spaniel came to be known as “the little brown dog that doesn’t rock the boat”. Being a hunting dog, he should be exhibited in hard muscled working condition. His coat should not be so excessive as to hinder his work as an active flushing spaniel, but should be thick enough to protect him from heavy cover and weather. The Boykin Spaniel is primarily a working gun dog; structure and soundness are of great importance. Size, Proportion, Substance - The Boykin Spaniel is solidly built, with moderate bone, and smooth firm muscles. The ideal height measured from the ground to the highest point of the shoulder blades for dogs is 15½ to 18 inches at the withers; for bitches is 14 to 16½ inches at the withers. Any variance greater than 1 inch above or below the ideal height is a major fault. The minimum height ranges shall not apply to dogs or bitches under 12 months of age. Proportion is slightly longer than tall, never square. However, exact proportion is not as important as the dog being well-balanced and sound, capable of performing the breed’s intended function.
