												Dragonflies and Damselflies Havasu National Wildlife Refuge
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Dragonflies and Damselflies Havasu National Wildlife Refuge Dragonfly and damselfly at Havasu National Wildlife Refuge There are twenty-five dragonfly and damselfly species listed at the 37,515 acre Havasu National Wildlife Refuge, one of more than 540 refuges throughout the United States. These National Wildlife Refuges are administered by the Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service. The Fish and Wildlife Service mission is to work with others “to conserve fish and wildlife and their habitat.” General Information Havasu National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 37,515 acres adjacent to the Colorado River. Topock Marsh, Topock Gorge, and the Havasu Wilderness constitute the three major portions of the refuge. Dragonflies, an important Male blue-ringed dancer sedula indicator of water quality, can be found © Dave Welling Photography on the refuge, primarily in Topock Marsh Libellula luctuosa Tramea onusta and Topock Gorge. Dragonflies can be Widow Skimmer Red Saddlebags viewed on the refuge year-round, with hot, sunny days providing some of the L. pulchella Pond Damsels–Dancers (Coenagrionidae) best viewing. Sixty-three dragonfly and Twelve-spotted Skimmer Argia moesta damsel species have been identified in Powdered Dancer Mohave County, Arizona. Visitors are L. saturate encouraged to contact refuge staff with a Flame Skimmer Argia sedula description or photograph, if an unlisted Blue-ringed Dancer species is observed. SPECIES FACT SHEET Scientific Name : Erpetogomphus compositus (Hagen in Selys1858) Common Name : White-belted Ringtail Phylum: Arthropoda Class: Insecta Order: Odonata Suborder: Anisoptera Family: Gomphidae (clubtails) Conservation Status : Global Status (1990): G5 Rounded Global Status: G5 - Secure National Status: N5 State Statuses- Arizona (SNR), California (SNR), Idaho (SNR), Nevada (SNR), New Mexico (SNR), Oregon (SNR) , Texas (SNR), Wyoming (SNR). Utah ranks the species as SH (Possible extirpated, historical), and in Washington it is ranked as S1 (Critically imperiled because of extreme rarity or because it is somehow especially vulnerable to extinction or extirpation). (NatureServe 2008) Technical Description : Adult: Characteristic of the family Gomphidae, this species has small, widely separated eyes and enlarged posterior abdominal segments (often less apparent on females). The conspicuously pale-ringed abdomen and pale green thorax with four distinct dark stripes are diagnostic for this species (Paulson 1999). The thorax is whitish between one pair of stripes (Paulson 2007a). The wings are clear with a slight yellowing at their bases (Abbot 2007). Total length: 46-55 mm (1.8-2.2 in.); abdomen: 31-39 mm (1.2-1.5 in.); hindwing: 26-32 mm (1-1.3 in.). Immature: Erpetogomphus in the Pacific Northwest can be identified by the following traits: prementum and palpal lobes flat (as opposed to cup-shaped), antennae 4-segmented, wing pads divergent, labium wide (maximum width more than half maximum width of head across eyes), tips of cerci extending at least 0.9 times (as opposed to 0.75 times) the distance to the tip of epiproct (Tennessen 2007). -

The Distribution and Relative Seasonal Abundance of Indiana Species of Five Families of Dragonflies (Odonata, Calopterygidae, Petaluridae, Cordulegasteridae, Gomphidae and Aeshnidae) B. Elwood Montgomery, Purdue University Three previous papers (Montgomery, 1942, 1944, 1945) have indi- cated the relative seasonal abundance of the adults of the Indiana species of Agrionidae, Cordulidae and Libellulidae. These studies have been based upon the frequency of collection and observation of the several species during the 41-year period of 1900 to 1940 inclusive. The present paper continues these studies to all other families of Odonata found in Indiana, except the Lestidae. Tabulations have been made from the records preserved in the notebooks of the late E. B. Williamson and of the author. The two charts presented here (Fig. 1 and 2) consist of time-frequency graphs for all Indiana species of the five families indicated. The graphs were con- structed by tabulating the records for the entire 41 years by thirds of months and plotting the resulting frequencies at the midpoints (5th, 15th and 25th respectively) of these thirds. During the period from 1900 to 1940, 51 species of the five families were collected or observed in Indiana. Six of these have been recorded in the state but once. No species was recorded for all of the 41 years; Anax Junius (Drury) was reported for 35 years, Calopteryx metadata (Beauvois) for 34, and Hetaerina americana (Fabricius) and Gomphus graslinellus Walsh for 30 years each. The number of species of these five families recorded each year has varied from two, in 1923, to 27, in 1932. -

This revised listing of the synonymic list (hereafter referred to as NWOL) includes additions and changes up through September 2018 and represents a complete listing for all described Odonata of North, Middle, and South America. Generic synonyms and nomina nuda are included when their identity is known (often through examination of labeled specimens). We do not recognize subgenera, but mention their names in the Comments section after the list. Species misidentifications are not included.
