This Hotline is packed with details and dates for tons of pre-fair and fair activities to help your family have a great summer in 4-H. There’s a lot going on and we often forget what a steep learning curve our 4-H culture requires of new families or even members taking new projects or participating in new 4-H activities. Let’s all go the extra mile to be mindful and welcoming since everyone does not have the same history and working knowledge of our 4-H family. •Non-Market Livestock (Breeding Project) Entry –Go to: go.osu.edu/nonmarketlivestock21 to register any non- market projects; members must have enrolled in a breeding project (includes beef breeding, turkey, ducks, geese, dairy cattle, sheep, fancy poultry, breeding & fancy rabbits, guinea pigs, and dairy, meat breeding and pygmy goats). All information must be completed!

•Member Completion- Call the Extension office for all members that have NOT completed a project, have dropped out of 4-H, or have not met completion requirements. A member is complete if: (1) The member attended the required meetings this year for your club (the minimum county requirement for 4-H completion is six meetings), (2) member completed at least one project and attended judging (Advisors cannot judge) or fair show.

•Market Pen/Sale registration: Go to: go.osu.edu/marketsalereg21 **NOT AVAILABLE TIL 7/1** Now that exhibitors can show multiple species and/or multiples of large animal species, it is required for ALL exhibitors to complete Jr. Fair market registration to empower Jr. Fair Livestock Superintendents to make stall assignments. Please go to the website above (July 1-July 15) to indicate HOW MANY MARKET ANIMALS you are bringing. In addition, this survey will ask you WHICH MARKET ANIMAL YOU INTEND ON SELLING (tag number) in the Ross County Jr. Fair Sale so that the sales office can prepare. All exhibitors will have 1 hour after their species show to go to the Jr. Fair Sale Office to request selling a different animal than what was originally stated.

QUALITY ASSURANCE ADVISOR PRE-FAIR TO-DO LIST All virtual Ross County QA options have passed. MARKET LIVESTOCK *NEW* Due July 15. If you have a member taking a market livestock project, they must register their animals for pen assignments and sale preference at go.osu.edu/marketsalereg21 Members will have one hour after their respective species show to change which animal is selling. Dairy cows/heifer exhibitors must complete this form.

NON-MARKET LIVESTOCK If you have a member taking a Non-Market Livestock project (i.e. Breeding project), they must register their animals at go.osu.edu/nonmarketlivestock21 or the member cannot take the animal to the fair.

FAIR WRISTBANDS Fair wristbands for Junior Fair members and advisors will be available starting July 19 at the Extension office. -Up to three Advisor wristbands will be given to each club (advisors must be registered and active). -Members’ wristbands are issued for members ages 7 and over (6 and under admitted free). -Fair wrist bands must be picked up by the club’s organizational advisor. Please make sure you distribute wristbands to members in time for fair opening.

BOOTH SET-UP Booths and displays/exhibits must be in place by 8:00 pm on the first Saturday of the Fair.

FAIR MOVE-IN No parking in barn area. Vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense. Rabbit exhibitors will not be permitted to park near barn and should plan to carry or wagon rabbits from the parking lot.

MARKET VOUCHERS Vouchers for market livestock will be distributed at animal weigh-ins. As is true with other vouchers, exhibitors are responsible for holding onto them until they are redeemed.

DUNF *NEW* Due by August 1. All market poultry, market steer, market hog, market lamb, market goat, dairy goat and dairy cattle livestock projects are required to complete the Drug Use Notification Forms (DUNF) certifying their animals are drug free. All DUNF’s will be completed ONLINE. Form will open on July 15 and must be submitted by August 1. go.osu.edu/rossDUNF

June/July Hotline 5 Ross County Extension PREMIER SKILLATHON July 13 & July 24 @ Fairgrounds during Skillathon Note: This HIGHLY ENCOURAGED, but optional, judging tests a member’s knowledge of all livestock species. Open to youth ages 12-18 (as of January 1). Members will complete SENIOR LEVEL stations in each species that test their general knowledge or application of knowledge of the 9 species. No pre- registration is necessary. Contestants receiving the top scores will be recognized at the fair with a cash prize provided by the Junior Fair Board. 1st place: $300 2nd place: $150 3rd place: $75 OUTHOUSE RACE, & NOTE: Once a 4-H/FFA exhibitor wins 1st place in Premier Skillathon contest, s/he is no longer eligible to LIP SYNC PRELIMS compete in Premier Skillathon contest for their remaining years. PREMIUM VOUCHERS FOR PROJECTS AND BOOTHS Every 4-H’er must redeem their project premium voucher(s) during the fair to receive their money. Non-livestock project vouchers will be given out during their project judging. Livestock members will receive vouchers during weigh-ins (market) or during the show (breeding). Exhibitors must hold on to it to receive their premium. Vouchers cannot be replaced. The voucher redemption booth is in the Jr. Fair Building in a ticket booth. June/July Hotline 7 Ross County Extension SKILLATHON 2021 Tuesday, July 13 or Saturday, July 24 @ Fairgrounds *All animal exhibitors are required to participate in Skillathon in order to show/sell at the Ross County Jr. Fair 2021. There are TWO date options to attend. (Horse Skillathon is held separately on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2021 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.) **Plan to attend your club’s assigned times. Please be patient as our volunteers work with our exhibitors! Study guides are available online for every species--- every question that could be asked is covered on these study guides! NEED Skillathon vouchers are “Activity Vouchers” that can be used in addition to “project vouchers”. VOLUNTEERS – Remember, youth must achieve over 75% score on Skillathon to earn this voucher. Contact Ext. Office! CHANGES FOR 2021 There is NO “thank you note” skills station but youth should come with a pre-written thank you note either in their book or separately. **COVID-19 Guidelines– this is a huge event with lots of people on-site at a time. For now, we ask that youth members ONLY enter the buildings (NO PARENTS). There will be 4-H Committee and Jr. Fair Board, as well as additional signage to help youth figure out where they are going. BUYER POSTER CONTEST The Ross County JFB sponsors a “Buyer Thank You Poster Contest” for members taking market animals. • Posters should be no bigger than 11” X 14” except for rabbits which should be • 8” x 11”. • It is suggested to use foam board or laminate poster since it is sturdy and easier • to mount. Posters must be up by 8:00 pm on Tuesday of the fair. • Posters must include first and last name as well as club name. Place poster on • pen or in designated location. If designated location is unknown, contact your • barn superintendent. Winning posters will be notated and recognized by ribbons • on their pens. • Top 2 posters from each species will be chosen and recognized with a ribbon, as • well as a prize. June/July Hotline 9 Ross County Extension June 17 - Early Judging July 13 - FCS & Nutrition & Clothing State-Level Competition July 15 - General Projects Yes... there will be State-level competition this year for FCS, Nutrition, Clothing, and General Keep judging days running smoothly by using this modified projects! process (follows current OSU guidelines) - 4-Hers will be selected at each judging to 1. ARRIVE - at your scheduled time on the correct judging represent Ross County at this next prestigious day. For Early and FCS judging, members must schedule level. Good luck! an on-line appointment. For General judging, the schedule is in the May Hotline. 2. SIGN-IN & BE SEATED – ONLY 4-Hers will be allowed to enter the building. Everyone else will wait outside. Junior Leaders will be available to assist members with multiple and/or large displays. 3. JUDGING – when your name is called, a helper will escort you to your judge for an interview. 4. RIBBON & VOUCHER TABLE – after judging, stop by table to pick up your Ribbon and Project Voucher.

The 4-H Halloween Campout Committee is excited about putting this event on for its 12th year! It will be September 24-26 at the Ross Co. Fairgrounds. It is only open to 4-H volunteers, members and their families. Registration packets will be available to advisors starting July 19th at the Extension office and during the week of the Ross County Fair, in the Jr. Fair Building at the Extension/Jr. Fair Office window. A 4-H advisor (Advisor in Charge) must be present at this event and must be camping. If none of your advisors can attend the event, your members can still participate if they find another club who has an advisor present AND camping and would be willing to take your members in. The Advisor designated as "In Charge" of each club (this does not have to be the organizational advisor but must be a current Ross County 4-H Advisor) will register all participants through an online registration system *info found in packet.* The 4-H Halloween Campout Committee will hold a mandatory "Advisors in Charge" meeting on Thursday, September 9 at 6:00 pm at the RCSC to go over the rules, plans, club assignments for helping at the event etc. to assist everyone in having a great experience. NEW THIS YEAR: ALL PAYMENTS WILL BE TURNED IN AT THE ADVISOR IN CHARGE MEETING (not in the office). The deadline for ALL registrations is September 1. No registrations will be accepted after this date. Cost is $50 per campsite which includes up to 5 people. Each camper above the 5 is an additional $5 per guest. Payments should be written as one check from the club. No cash payments will be accepted. Featured activities include: wagon rides, crafts and games, Trick-or-Treat, Costume Contest, and Best Decorated Campsite (both single and group) so be sure to get all your decorations ready if you would like it to be judged!
