Burlington scored a run in the second on an RBI single by Morgan McCullough and added a run in the third when a pop up by Keinner Pina dropped into shallow right field, allowing Spencer Griffin to Midwest League • Second Half score. The Captains pulled back within one run in the fourth when Cody Farhat tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly to second baseman Justin Jones, where Jones raced back to make an over-the-shoulder catch in right-center. The Bees added a final run in the fifth on an RBI single by Griffin. Burlington’s pitchers held the Captains to just two hits. Starter Cole Duensing earned the win, allowing two hits and one run over five innings. Greg Veliz and Austin Eastern Division W L GB Krzeminski each pitched two scoreless and hitless innings. Captains starter Zach Draper allowed three runs over five innings to take the loss. HOW THE WEST WAS TIED: The Captains finished their six-game, Western Division road trip with three wins and three losses. The Captains lost their series finale at Burlington to split the road trip. Overall this season, the Captains are 8-9 against the Western Division. The Captains’ shortstop batted .632 (12- for-19) with a double, a triple, three RBI and three runs scored with one walk and no strikeouts. Schneemann posted four multi-hit performances out of five South Bend (Cubs) 12 12 5.0 games played, highlighted by a 4-for-4 performance at Burlington on Saturday. Ruben Cardenas hit an inside-the-park home run on April 16 in Bowling Green, marking the Captains’ first inside-the-park round-tripper since Sam Haggerty hit one on August 8, 2016 against the Dayton Dragons. The Captains also pitched a combined no-hitter on June 22 in game two of a doubleheader against the West Michigan Whitecaps. Hey, Jimmy: The Indians did show interest in Alvarez, who was non-tendered by the Pirates and became a free agent. I think a couple of things probably came into play: No. 1, Alvarez was more expensive than the $7 million deal the Indians agreed to with Napoli. No. 2, the Indians felt Napoli helped them two ways – he gave their offense needed pop from the right side of the plate and he improved their defense. Napoli – whose deal should soon be made official – allows the Indians to move Carlos Santana to DH while he will get most of the time at first base. There is no doubt about Alvarez's power, but he made 23 errors at first base last season. I think the Indians preferred Napoli, considering the cost, at first and Santana at DH instead of Santana at first and Alvarez at DH.
