This exhibition also examines the cultures of Nashville and fiercely independent Austin, and the complicated, surprising relationships between the two. Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Dr. William Ferris Dr. Robert Cantwell Dr. Patricia Sawin © 2009 Ashley Denise Melzer ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT ASHLEY MELZER: Time’s the Revelator: Revival and Resurgence in Alt.country and Modern Old-Time American Music (Under the directions of Dr. William Ferris, Dr. Robert Cantwell, and Dr. Patricia Sawin) This thesis investigates the relationship between the modern old-time and alt.country movements through the comparison of four different female musicians: Abigail Washburn, Rayna Gellert, Gillian Welch, and Neko Case. These four women often pull from the same wellspring of old-time songs/structures/sounds, but their instincts come from exceptionally different places. The disparity between the ways they approach their music, reveals how the push toward modern capitalist industrialism has affected how different artists and communities access and transmit those old-world icons and sounds. Furthermore, their engagement specifically with the topic of gender exposes key tactical differences. Old-time musicians, Washburn and Gellert, work within the strictures of tradition so as to remain in dialogue with their community. He rose to fame for playing the Man with No Name in Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy of spaghetti westerns (A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) during the 1960s, and as San Francisco Police Department Inspector Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry films (Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool) during the 1970s and 1980s. These roles, along with several others in which he plays tough-talking no-nonsense police officers, have made him an enduring cultural icon of masculinity. Outlaws and Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ‘70s Capsule Bios of Pivotal Artists Kris Kristofferson—Along with Tom T. Hall, John Hartford, and Mickey Newbury, Kristofferson elevated the language of country music in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Equally inspired by two key Williams — William Blake and Hank Williams — he was integral in merging the street-level counter-culture with the mainstream. He wrote country classics including “”For the Good Times” and “Sunday Morning Coming Down” as well as Janis Joplin’s rib-rattling rock statement, “Me and Bobby McGee.” He also sang progressive anthems including “Jesus Was a Capricorn.” Willie Nelson — Nelson struggled in the 1960s as he sought to match his songwriting success (“Hello, Walls,” “Crazy”) with progress as an entertainer. Depressed by his inability to do this, he lit out for his native Texas in 1971 and emerged as a uniter of rednecks, hippies, and freaks. In Texas, he found a flowering culture that embraced artistry and eschewed cultural labels. He became, and remains, a Buddha-like figure who is loved and revered by people of varying political and musical perspectives. Waylon Jennings — “It’s the same old tune: fiddle and guitar/ Where do we take it from here?” Waylon sang, in a song that answered those very same questions. Jennings, a Texas native, came to Nashville in the 1960s and was dissatisfied by a glossy “Nashville Sound” that he said fit him “like syrup on sugar.” He fought and won creative freedom and recorded some of the greatest and most distinctive songs in country music history.

Glaser, 2015 The Glaser Brothers, comprised of Tompall, Chuck and Jim Glaser, were country music visionaries who were deeply immersed in Nashville's music scene during the 1950's through the 1980's. These three Nebraska-born brothers had careers as a noted country music trio, recording as "Tompall & The Glaser Brothers," and also as individuals. They released records utilizing unique harmonies, they toured the USA and abroad, they owned publishing companies, they wrote songs and did so much more. In fact, there was little that these three men did not do while they were active in the country music industry. So, it's sad to know that many of their impressive accomplishments have either never been known publically, or have been forgotten by people today who create or listen to country music. The intent of this document is to share information about The Glaser Brothers collectively, and about Tompall, Chuck and Jim Glaser individually. While not as well known as many other country music artists, I invite you to compare what they have accomplished with any other historical country music figures. While perhaps others have done as much as the Glasers, no one comes to mind who has done more than The Glaser Brothers, individually and as a group. If you agree, please share your opinion with the Country Music Association and ask them to consider inducting The Glaser Brothers into the Country Music Hall of Fame to acknowledge their contributions to country music and to give them the recognition that they so justly deserve.

Thomerson BM, State University of New York at Fredonia, 2008 MM, University of Louisville, 2010 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD ABSTRACT Parody is the most commonly used structural borrowing technique in contemporary American vernacular music. This study investigates parody as a borrowing practice, as a type of humor, as an expression of ethnic identity, and as a response to intellectual trends during the final portion of the twentieth century. This interdisciplinary study blends musicology with humor studies, ethnic studies, and intellectual history, touching on issues ranging from reception history to musical meaning and cultural memory. As a structural borrowing technique, parody often creates incongruity—whether lyrical, stylistic, thematic, evocative, aesthetic, or functional—within a recognized musical style. Parodists combine these musical incongruities with other comic techniques and social conventions to create humor. Parodists also rely on pre-existing music to create, reinforce, and police ethnic boundaries, which function within a racialized discourse through which parodists often negotiate ethnic identities along a white-black binary. Despite parody’s ubiquity in vernacular music and notwithstanding the genre’s resonance with several key themes from the age of fracture, cultivated musicians have generally parody. The genre’s structural borrowing technique limited the identities musicians could perform through parodic borrowings. This study suggests several areas of musicological inquiry that could be enriched through engagement with parody, a genre that offers a vast and largely unexplored repertoire indicating how musical, racial, and cultural ideas can circulate in popular discourse.

Jessi Colter From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Early life Colter was born Miriam Johnson in Phoenix, Arizona daughter of a Pentecostal preacher mother, Helen, and a race- car driving father. Growing up, she showed a prodigious musical talent. Indeed, by the tender age of eleven, she was playing piano and singing in the choir at her mother's church. Entering talent contests and performing in and around Phoenix on local television stations as a teenager, Miriam met renowned Rock and Roll guitarist Duane Eddy, who helped the budding singer-songwriter cut her first demo recordings. The two married in 1962. Eddy produced her first singles on the Jamie label. At that time, she wrote and recorded under her married name, "Miriam Eddy", and toured extensively in the USA and Europe with her rocker husband, performing as a back-up singer and featured guest. As a recording artist, independent success eluded her. However, Duane continued to promote her as a songwriter, and she found success penning hits for other artists, including Don Gibson, Nancy Sinatra, and Dottie West (who charted with the ballad, "No Sign of Living" in 1965). In 1968, Miriam and Eddy divorced, and she returned to Phoenix.[1] A year later she met the man who would become her second husband, country singer Waylon Jennings. The couple married in 1969 and moved to Nashville, where both hoped to find a musical niche for their distinct artistic styles. Jennings had, by that time, achieved some moderate success on the country charts, as well as notoriety for his friendships with hard-partying peers Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson.

BIOGRAPHY: JESSI COLTER TALENTED ARTIST, SUPPORTIVE WIFE Jessi Colter was the most prominent woman associated with the Outlaw movement. Though she earned her stature as a talented singer-songwriter, her career has often been overshadowed by the music of her husband, Waylon Jennings, who was one of the movement’s key figures. “People forget how great a singer Jessi is,” said Lenny Kaye, who co-wrote Jennings’s autobiography. “Since she was part of some of the country icons of our time, her own contribution has been overlooked sometimes, and her own sense of modesty has not allowed her to be recognized as one of the queens of country music.” Colter was born Mirriam Johnson on May 25, 1943, in Phoenix, Arizona. Her father was a race-car driver and her mother was a Pentecostal minister, and she was singing in her mother’s choir by age six and serving as the church pianist by age eleven. In 1961, she was discovered in Phoenix by rock & roll guitarist Duane Eddy, who produced her first single, a pop song that The album went on to become the first platinum country earned regional success. She and Eddy, who is now in album, selling more than one million copies, and it the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, married and settled in cemented Colter’s role in the Outlaw movement. Los Angeles, where he pursued his music career and she wrote songs that were recorded by both country and Riding the Outlaw wave, she toured extensively with pop artists. After they divorced in 1968, she returned Jennings and Nelson.
